Motivation Mondays: MINDSET – #WorldPopulationDay

Resolutions are a wonderful thing if we can keep them, but many resolutions go by the wayside because we have not done anything different with our mindset. Monica Johnson
I have found that the more I honored others, the more they honored me and the more fulfilling my career became. In the business arena, I have been surrounded by people with awesome skills. The difference between good and great is determined by the mindset you choose to bring to the work. The concept of honor should be part of that mindset. Douglas Conant

Tomorrow is World Population Day and we are at 7.5 billion souls on planet earth. How will we sustain this growth? What will be its impact on global environmental sustainability, socioeconomic development, and climate change? Whether we choose to embrace the rest of the world or pretend we are the only ones in it, we will be impacted. Since 1989, when UNDP responded to the excitement generated on July 11 1987 as the Day of 5 Billion, and created World Population Day, it hasn’t looked back. It has tackled many issues facing the world from empowerment to education to ending poverty and more. With each new year, as our global population continues to explode, our scientific community remain concerned that unless we all get involved in dealing with issues affecting the earth, we will have a hard time making our planet sustainable for us, our grandchildren and beyond.

This year, the theme for World Population Day focuses on Family Planning: Empowering People, Developing Nations. When we are able to provide adequate healthcare and family planning options to the 214 million women in the world who need it, we are helping each other stay healthy, raise families we can feed, educate and support, and we are helping reduce infant mortality rates in poverty stricken areas where the survival rate for babies and young mothers are terrible.

But what has our mindset got to do with it? Our attitudes towards our planet, our fellow men/women, our conspicuous consumption/waste of resources, and our abuse of planet earth are the result of our mindset; a careless disregard for our natural and finite resources, and a dismissal of others who share our planet. Think about it. When we control all the natural resources in certain parts of the world and deprive others of their basic, fundamental right to food, shelter, education and healthcare, we are contributing to the denial of Mother Earth’s abundance to all her children.  When we make great effort to reduce our carbon footprint and do our bit to extend green life on our planet, and support sustainable practices that benefit all globally, it is our mindset that pushes us to act in a way that honors EVERYONE, not just our own. Therefore, our mindset will impact the present and future trajectory of our lives.

“I truly believe in positive synergy, that your positive mindset gives you a more hopeful outlook, and belief that you can do something great means you will do something great.” Russell Wilson

What I’m trying to do is get a change in the mindset so people move from a level of mere tolerance to total acceptance and eventually to celebrate diversity. If you feel comfortable with one another, it doesn’t matter whether we live in which neighborhood but we can interact with one another freely. It’s a mindset. Najib Razak
We’re so lucky where we live, but we’re so out of touch. Everyone’s mindset is made to feel that refugees are a problem, but it’s more than that. They’re human beings, too. They were forced from their homes. Sonny Bill Williams
My greatest challenge has been to change the mindset of people. Mindsets play strange tricks on us. We see things the way our minds have instructed our eyes to see. Muhammad Yunus

How Can We become Positive Contributors to World Population Day? We must start from a place of concern and compassion for all earth’s children. Stay informed and engaged about population trends. We live in a diverse world with people who live in other cultures and have beliefs that are vastly different from ours, we can move from tolerance to acceptance by changing our thinking and by seeing others as we wish them to see us… as members of our global family. We must drop the poverty mentality that is pervasive in certain parts of society and recognize that by helping those in need, we are not depriving ourselves of anything. Instead, we are creating meaningful engagements and new relationships across what once seemed like the unknown. Refugees are not our problem, our poverty mentality and false beliefs about them are a product of a negative mindset that refuses to acknowledge their humanity.

If we, as members of the human race, work on changing our mindset about each other, we will leave a legacy of peace and abundance to the next generation… But it must start with each of us in our hearts and in our homes. It is our narrowmindness that often stands in the way of our own success. We must start to let go of the warped idea that we have more or less value than the next person. ALL of us are important to someone and can make a difference in the life of another. Do not fall for the ridiculous notion that being relevant is the preserve of the few. Recently, I read an article about a man who started what became a multi-million dollar company in his basement. He was determined to create a product that would benefit others and his software for phones became a huge success. His wife and mother-in-law were doubtful when he started and tried to discourage his effort but, his mindset was focused on achieving his goal. When we focus our minds on what must be done, we can move mountains.

Motivation Mondays: MINDSET – #WorldPopulationDay

You can put someone in a new home, but you can’t give them a new mindset. Dan Phillips
Common sense would suggest that having ability, like being smart, inspires confidence. It does, but only while the going is easy. The deciding factor in life is how you handle setbacks and challenges. People with a growth mindset welcome setbacks with open arms. Travis Bradberry
I think anything is possible if you have the mindset and the will and desire to do it and put the time in. Roger Clemens

Why is a rigid mindset hard to shift? Humans are used to certain behavior patterns and find it very hard to let go of habits; even ridiculous ones. Take for instance the highway near my home. Every morning, I get on that highway to go to the gym. Invariably, for about 2-3 exits, the traffic crawls at a snail’s pace for NO reason. It is as if all the drivers are in a trance or a bunch of leemins on their way to the mountain’s edge. Why the slowing of traffic? Good question! The cars are coming off the bridge unto the highway, but most of the drivers are still mentally on the bridge. The highway has 3 wide lanes and the morning traffic has access to multiple exits so there should be no reason for the slowness… but their mindsets say… “You are on the bridge!” So, until about the 3rd exit, they drive like they are on the bridge till a trigger kicks in and then the traffic eases. By the same token, our mindset tricks us to believe whatever we wish to see and believe until another trigger dominates…  WE can make a change.

Important Facts About World Population Day: It took hundreds of thousands of years for the world population to grow to 1 billion – then in just another 200 years or so, it grew sevenfold. In 2011, the global population reached the 7 billion mark, and today, it stands at about 7.5 billion.
This dramatic growth has been driven largely by increasing numbers of people surviving to reproductive age, and has been accompanied by major changes in fertility rates, increasing urbanization and accelerating migration. These trends will have far-reaching implications for generations to come. World population trends
Depending on fertility rates, the world population could reach between 10-16 billion by 2050. The top 21 nations expected to experience greater population growth by 2050 are India, China, Nigeria, US, Indonesia, Pakistan, Brazil, Bangladesh, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Mexico, Egypt, Philippines, Tanzania, Russia, Vietnam, Japan, Uganda, Turkey, Kenya, and Iran. Since these nations are quite diverse, we will see the growth of a changing, diverse landscape across the globe and that is a good thing. We need to work together to keep our planet alive.
World Population Day, which seeks to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues, was established by the then-Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989, an outgrowth of the interest generated by the Day of Five Billion, which was observed on 11 July 1987.
By resolution 45/216 of December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly decided to continue observing World Population Day to enhance awareness of population issues, including their relations to the environment and development. 2017 theme is Family Planning: Empowering People, Developing Nations.  World Population Day, 11 July, coincides with the Family Planning Summit, Access to safe, voluntary family planning is a human right. It is also central to gender equality and women’s empowerment, and is a key factor in reducing poverty.World Population Day

Until we shift our mindset, not much will change in this world. It must start with each of us from our hearts.

Have a Happy, Healthy 2017!

Wow. I cannot believe the world has that much people already! I know that there are some countries that are really over populated, while others have an aging or dwindling population. I guess the best way to address issues with population is education and information dissemination.

Raising awareness and proper education would be the best way to help address the issue of world population. It is important that everyone takes part in this, for the welfare of future generations. Just to think that they might run out of food sources is frightening.

    • 11/07/2017 12:26 am

And the issue is REAL. We live on an abundant planet but to replenish what we take must be done with care and consideration. When we contaminate our streams, it has an impact that is far reaching… Yes, it is worrisome.

I believe that everything that starts with our mindset and thoughts flows through us and become actions. Everything that we say and do started from how we perceive the things around us.

Yes. I like that you mentioned the company we keep. There`s a popular saying, “Tell me who your friends are and I`ll tell you who you are.” The saying was along this line.

Whether we like it or not, we are being influenced little by little by the people that surround us. This is why it`s important to be with people that uplift us and help us do positive things in life.

Wow! 7.5 billion is a lot of people. Family planning needs to be accessible to all people and at an affordable price. So many people do not have options when deciding the sizes of their families.

    • 11/07/2017 12:22 am

And there are so many issues around the subject. There is wisdom to planning so families have enough to nurture and raise their kids.

  7. 10/07/2017 9:52 pm

I really believe in family planning, because there are way too many people and not enough resources. That being said, if a family wants a child, they should have a child, they should just be responsible with how they interact with the world.

    • 11/07/2017 12:21 am

The jury is out on that one but my position is more about not wasting resources so we can leave some for generations to come. I hear you!

  8. 10/07/2017 10:57 pm

That’s a phenomenal increase in 28 years, very worrying.

    • 11/07/2017 12:19 am

True… and the main concern is that we need to maintain our resources and curb waste so everyone can have access to food, water and other basics.

We all are human being, however somehow we have started to discriminate each other with various definitions, it all in the mindset. I agree with you, in order to prosper in the world we are living in we need to be patient and treat each other equally and change our mindset. How this will be accomplished? Through education, it will solve all our problems, especially when it comes to population control.

This cannot be more true. It’s all about how we look at the world and how we treat it. This also applies to how we see each other as co-inhabitants of the Earth. We have to be aware of what we’re doing to the world and we have to change the way we see it, we should stop consuming and start preserving.

Goodness, I did not even know there was a World Population Day! Thanks for informing me on that one. I completely agree that there needs to be a change of mindset in this world. Especially in America we tend to have these negative mindsets of other countries, people, and things. It wasn’t until I started traveling that those mindsets were challenged and changed. Even with the increase in migration and globalization, many of us still don’t have connections to others in the world.

The only thing in life that is constant is change, therefore as humans we should learn to be flexible with our decisions because rigidity only leads to a dead end at times. I love your analogies and i could just go on and on. Thanks for this.

I had no idea how many people were in the world today! I love that the theme is family planning and empowering people. We are a family of 7 so helping not just our family but other families is something I enjoy doing. There is something about helping other people that changes your mindset about our world. I agree, changing our mindsets, starts with us and our hearts.

Sometimes we are so focused in our day to day that we seem to forget that we are just a little spec of those billions of people that make up humanity. In order to become contributors, we need to educate others and lead by example. Great post!

I didn’t know there was a World Population Day, but I recently read an article about some scientists who think we are facing another mass extinction. I also remember reading a book that was written in like…the 1950s or something about a world that was horrendously overcrowded..at 8billion people. Scary thoughts. Which make it hard to stay positive. But I do agree that our world is shaped by thoughts and positive thoughts are a valuable contribution to our world community. Not easy, but worth trying.

    • 13/07/2017 4:05 am

Definitely worth trying. Also, I didn’t get into this part as I’m trying to stay non-political on this post but, we have enough resources to feed and care for everyone on our planet. However, between corporate greed, human wasteful consumption, and political machinations, those resources are denied the poor. Hundreds of thousands of families go hungry every day because of this greed and wastage…. Add to it, the pollution of our waters and we are potentially headed to a dark place. That said, there are so many light workers on this planet whose goodwill uphold the ethical core of Mother Earth. For them, I stay hopeful and grateful. 🙂 Now, let me step off my soapbox. Ahem. <3

I have always believed that a positive attitude produces positive results. If we all treat every one equally and fairly, the world will be a better place. I really admire your effort to raise awareness that we all need to take care of this planet for our own sake and the future generations’ sake. Great work.

Family planning is so important in order to provide children the best. We also need to make sure we make this world a better place to our kids to live in, instead of not being mindful of using the resources we readily have.

These are really difficult issues to tackle and change comes when a lot for mindsets have shifted. This year’s theme is an important one but sadly it’s one heck on an issue that is difficult to manage. Having lived in Africa and learning about certain misconceptions people have on family planning, I believe it is a difficult task to control the population and improve our alreadly bleeding earth.

This was an interesting read. Global Environmental Ethics is a huge topic. One of the problems I encountered during my Masters was that we use certain words assuming everyone understands them the same way. Sustainable – for example. To have a discussion about the sustainability of a particular action or industry we must first all agree on what it actually means.

    • 13/07/2017 1:50 pm

And that will take all day… hence many can’t agree on the fundamental, ethical rights of all of us to have access to food, shelter, clean water and healthcare… I think the rhetoric is poisonous as evil hides behind confusing language…

It’s amazing to me how so many people don’t think how much they affect the footprint of the planet. I’ve watched a handful of documentaries on the subject and I couldn’t in good conscious have a handful of children. I’m sure that sounds awful to some, but we need to figure a way to support every one that’s here, and not deplete our resources. This is a huge topic! Thank you for your article
