Motivation Mondays: PERSEVERANCE

26/06/2017

“Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after the other.”  Walter Elliot

Motivation Mondays: PERSEVERANCE

Motivation Mondays: PERSEVERANCE

Perseverance, secret of all triumphs. Victor Hugo
As long as we are persistence in our pursuit of our deepest destiny, we will continue to grow. We cannot choose the day or time when we will fully bloom. It happens in its own time. Denis Waitley

What motivates you/your attitude on PERSEVERANCE? When I think of PERSEVERANCE, what comes to mind isn’t always the big goals we aim for or the insurmountable barriers we’ve overcome to get from point A to point B. It is the small steps we take daily to build on our effort to complete tasks that contribute to the whole. Every day, we get out of bed and work our schedule; this might include taking care of family members, kids, others who depend on our work, work related projects, our bodies, mind, and overall health. We make the effort, sometimes unconsciously, because of a mechanism within that kicks in reminding us to carry on. It is for this reason that perseverance is the persistent, powerful, and even inspirational little engine chugging along, pulling us forward to meet our destiny.

At some point in our lives, events might occur that derail this rhythmic inner commitment and, for a moment, we might find ourselves off track, back at square one, and laboring to start our journey all over again. We might stop and ponder what drives us daily to perform mundane and major acts. We might choose to just get back up and get on with the tasks before us. Whether we choose to reflect on it or not, what matters is that we stay committed to completing our tasks in clockwork fashion. Perseverance is our will to survive, our inner drive to achieve our aims, and the memories embedded in our being that kick-start our day; persistently telling us to get up and go. This simple motivating factor drives the sense of accomplishment we feel when tasks are done and new ones are placed before us. Like the wild flowers growing through cracks in concrete slaps, and the persistent snail and tortoise who win their races, albeit at a slow and steady pace, if we stay the course we have carved out for ourselves, we will find an astonishing body of work at key stop points in our lives and at the end of our journey.

Carry On by Robert William Service
It’s easy to fight when everything’s right,
And you’re mad with the thrill and the glory;
It’s easy to cheer when victory’s near,
And wallow in fields that are gory.
It’s a different song when everything’s wrong,
When you’re feeling infernally mortal;
When it’s ten against one, and hope there is none,
Buck up, little soldier, and chortle:

Carry on! Carry on!
There isn’t much punch in your blow.
You’re glaring and staring and hitting out blind;
You’re muddy and bloody, but never you mind.
Carry on! Carry on!
You haven’t the ghost of a show.
It’s looking like death, but while you’ve a breath,
Carry on, my son! Carry on! Contd below and/or here

Motivation Mondays: PERSEVERANCE

Motivation Mondays: PERSEVERANCE

How does PERSEVERANCE play out in our life? You get up daily, follow a routine, head for work, return home and do it all over again the next day. Why? Because there is an inner drive that insists you must do it. By the same token, the writing life and process demands a commitment and unswerving devotion to our goals. In the beginning, we might pick and choose when to process our creative thoughts on paper but, over time, the muse becomes vocal and her voice grows more impatient and even demanding, as she nudges us to get with it and write. If we stay the course, our writing will take new directions we never intended and we will be guided to do work that might not have been on our vision board at all. Now, I should add that there is no definitive, linear timeline. It occurs at different points for each of us but, when it comes, we will recognize it and all the persistent steps we took to get creative would start making sense. But there is a post script to this, we will need to keep at our craft, writing and rewriting, exploring new frames of thought, and experimenting with our content to keep it all fresh and fluid.

So, when you feel an inner hunger to create a piece that is not driven by market forces or the expectations of X and Y, you are responding to that little voice within, urging you to change directions, telling you to push beyond your limitations, and rise above the repetitive claptrap that might have taken over and put your work in auto-drive. Our inner checker will persistently push the blurring boundaries that are closing in and nudge us to not conform. At some point, some of us may choose to stay put and churn out our usual, while others clip their chains and fly off to new creative realms. Perseverance is not a tame or quiet quality. It is persistent and demanding. We see it in our daily routines and in our rigidity about not conforming to certain beliefs. We see it in our stick-to-itness in the face of failure, and we see it in our interactions with the world at large from our cradle to our grave. Without perseverance, we’d still be living in the dark ages… Creativity, innovation, leadership and every quality, in between, finds its footing in perseverance. How does it play out in your life?

READ – Inspiration: Writing as Medicine…

And so in the strife of the battle of life
It’s easy to fight when you’re winning;
It’s easy to slave, and starve and be brave,
When the dawn of success is beginning.
But the man who can meet despair and defeat
With a cheer, there’s the man of God’s choosing;
The man who can fight to Heaven‘s own height
Is the man who can fight when he’s losing.

Carry on! Carry on!
Things never were looming so black.
But show that you haven’t a cowardly streak,
And though you’re unlucky you never are weak.
Carry on! Carry on!
Brace up for another attack.
It’s looking like hell, but — you never can tell:
Carry on, old man! Carry on! Contd below

Motivation Mondays: PERSEVERANCE

Motivation Mondays: PERSEVERANCE

What more does Perseverance demand? When I started my first blog in the early 2000s, I was not clear about why I was doing it. My cousin, Frieda, created the website, I logged in, wrote some inane piece and summarily abandoned the process. Years later, in 2008, I returned to blogging as a way to help my agents stay motivated. Eventually, it became a personal exercise in encouraging others to carry on. Whether you blog for X or Y, the focus it demands will make you more reflective about your goals and, if you stay patient with it all, you will achieve them.

We see this pattern in the world around us: When someone becomes an “overnight success,” we sometimes forget that they might have spent decades honing their craft, dealing with their share of rejection, and doing all the work that propelled them forward. Without the requisite effort, we might find ourselves spinning round and round in circles, and filling our heads with false promises. What else does perseverance demand? Truthful assessment of our effort in an unvarnished way. Until we face our truth and lies about ourselves, we will not experience the full benefits of this remarkable quality that resides in each of us… To tap into your core, spend some time in meditation and reflection, write your answers down and hold them close to your heart. Then press on, you won’t fail!

There are some who drift out in the deserts of doubt,
And some who in brutishness wallow;
There are others, I know, who in piety go
Because of a Heaven to follow.
But to labour with zest, and to give of your best,
For the sweetness and joy of the giving;
To help folks along with a hand and a song;
Why, there’s the real sunshine of living.

Carry on! Carry on!
Fight the good fight and true;
Believe in your mission, greet life with a cheer;
There’s big work to do, and that’s why you are here.
Carry on! Carry on!
Let the world be the better for you;
And at last when you die, let this be your cry:
Carry on, my soul! Carry on! via famouspoetsandpoems.com

    Yes! I have dubbed myself ‘creatively frustrated’. I write, draw, paint, I’m a full-time professional photographer and I do graphic design. I have so much to me that I’m trying to get out, that impatient voice usually shows itself in the form of my writing. I have learned to not give up or give in over the years. I’ve hit so many brick walls and have felt like quitting but my perseverance and faith has kept me on a great path.

    This was such a great post! Thank you for sharing!

    Keeping going is key to success. You can never win at anything if you give up before you have a chance to finish.

    There was a time in my life when I quit blogging, too. For two years I stopped writing altogether, until I yearned for that feeling of letting my creative juices out, being able to share my experiences with the world, letting people know about what I think about this and that. 🙂

      I did the same thing and it was just what I needed so I could focus on my health at that time… Now I pace myself better. 2 times a week in the summer and 3-4 in the fall/winter.

    There is a quote from C.S. Lewis that reminds me of perseverance – “Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes, but when you look back, everything is different…” I remind myself of this when I get hung up on the same mundane routine. Sometimes I feel like nothing is happening, and I think why am I working so hard every day, but it is always changing. We have to look at the big picture and keep that perseverance because it is moving us forward.

    Yes, I agree that perseverance is all about the small steps it takes us to get to our end goal! I like how you point out that “overnight successes” are rarely that… usually, there has been years of work and preparation for what they have achieved, it just looks like it “came out of nowhere” to everyone else.

    Once you learn that motivation is just a slight push you need every now and then it becomes so much easier to reach goals. Whenever I set myself a new goal, be it health or work related I break it down into smaller steps and try to keep myself motivated along the way, this is where perseverance takes place. Going to share this post with a friend of mine who is trying to get out of a depression since quite a while now. Maybe hearing this from a stranger might give her a push.

    My husband and I have been pushed to such extremes this year. First surgery then a sense that he would be let go or fired from his job, to searching for a new job, to taking a massive paycut, to moving to another state….in all that routine goes out the window and you are simply trying to survive from one moment to the next. We are finally settled here and it’s my chance to create a new routine and find an ability once again to make money from writing while I take care of my children. I’m hoping I can make it work and perseverance is what is keeping me going.

    Perseverance comes in many ways, and through different factors. I remember a school project when I was a kid, a group of 5 people but only 1 did everything, and even though the whole situation was frustrating, she still ended up completing it and getting the grades. Perseverance is such a meaningful word that’s so inspiring. I usually like to put patience and perseverance hand in hand. Love the photo collage true to the meaning!

    For me, when I think of perseverance, I think of my memoir. It’s been such a long journey, physically and metaphorically. It’s been a journey coming to terms with my PTSD diagnosis and as I revise my memoir and work on it, keeping my editor’s advice in mind, I think of how far I have come and that’s what keeps me going even when I feel like throwing in the towel.

    One of these photos really made its mark with me, and that is the snail. I feel that is the perfect symbol of perseverance. Its motto seems to be “slow makes steady progress towards the goal.” Do not mind other distractions beside you. We all have our own pace to follow.

    I like the quote on perseverance and comparing it to a race. That’s true, we should really have a mindset of cutting our task into smaller goals and eventually completing everything.

    Perseverance is a strong word. I know most of us try every day to reach our top. As quoted by Denis Waitley we reach it in our own time. Love his quote.

    Very motivational! I have a few personal goals that I am working on that seem so lofty some days, and I think, I just need to give this up. But I have to remember one foot in front of the other, and keep at it. I will get there, I just have to stay focused and persevere.

    I love the idea that perserverence is lots of short races after each other not one long race.
    Perserverence is definitely needed for blogging, I think that’s what makes people stick to it or not.

    The first quote reminds me of procrastination. Many people procrastinate because they think a certain task takes a long time but the reality is, most of the time the procrastination lasts longer than the time of doing the task. We need to persevere, one step or one short run at a time.

    That’s it! A few days ago a friend asked me “what would you say it’s your best quality?” I hesitated a lot and gave her a lame answer. But this is what I wanted to say! Perseverance is my best (and maybe only?) quality. I don’t have any talent, and if I have come this far (which for many people would seem like not far at all) it is thanks to my inner strength and perseverance. I will never give up.
    Thank you for this beautiful and inspiring article.

    Perserverance is important to reach our goal. Many of us dropped out and did not perserve till the end , once we choose to drop out from something we started with, it is a sign of losing already. This is another inspiring post which help me to stay on trek and get motivated to what I am doing and also help me to preserve.
