Motivation Mondays: Honoring Memorial Day

Motivation Mondays: Honoring Memorial Day

Motivation Mondays: Honoring Memorial Day

What do you know about Memorial Day ? On this special day of remembrance, we attend services, we give thanks for our servicemen/women, we join the parade, we eat and reminisce about the lives of loved ones or strangers lost, we honor those who made it home, our sons and daughters in the forces, our friends and family; yet, we must never forget that war is a temporary solution to peace, not the answer. Families who’ve lost loved ones carry the pain of loss for the rest of their lives. We must seek peaceful options and spare lives. Peaceful efforts must shape our daily interactions as we work together to mitigate the hatred, greed, and confusion that often lead nations on the path to war. As we hunker down today with friends and family, let’s also remember those who continue to struggle with the aftermaths of war.

What are the Facts? Memorial Day is celebrated annually on the last Monday of May and dedicated to the memory of fallen American men and women who died in all wars and armed conflicts. Initially created to honor northern soldiers who died in the Civil War, it became a way to remember those who died in World War I, II and then all wars. In 1971, it was declared a national holiday in the USA. Every year, we pause to pay tribute to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice – service men/women who gave up their lives so the rest of us might live. Each casualty of war or MIA leaves behind loved ones, family members, and memories of what could have been… Many who came home, arrived with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other mental health issues. Some remain paralyzed and/or damaged by the memories and impact of being in a war zone. How do we ever forget? How can we help?

On Memorial Day, I don’t want to only remember the combatants. There were also those who came out of the trenches as writers and poets, who started preaching peace, men and women who have made this world a kinder place to live.” Eric Burdon

How can we be of help? Who do we reach for support? We can offer pockets of hope by encouraging people to share information on resources available to our  surviving servicemen/women and their loved ones. Support the efforts of those who are thriving and those who are struggling. Hope keeps survivors fighting to stay alive and comes in many forms; through grace, the kindness of people and opportunities to heal. Hope comes in the form of Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, TAPS, which was created in 1994 by Bonnie Carroll after the tragic death of her husband, Brig. Gen Tom Carroll, in a plane crash. TAPS offers a variety of resources to the loved ones/family of military staff. They provide comprehensive care including services and programs such as peer based emotional support, case work assistance, crisis intervention, and grief and trauma resources. They give help, hope and healing to families who have lost a loved one/family member. Their toll-free hot line is: 1-800-509-TAPS (8277).

For those battling depression, post traumatic stress disorders and/or feeling suicidal, both Hopeline and AFSP – American Foundation for Suicide Prevention provide great resources and immediate help to veterans and their families. Hopeline was started in 1998 by Reese Butler after the death of his wife, Kristin, by suicide. His goal has remained “to offer HOPE and the option to LIVE to those in the deepest emotional pain.” AFSP has been involved in several suicide prevention initiatives and provides groundbreaking research, educational campaigns, innovative demonstration projects and important policy work. It advocates for policies and legislation at all levels of government bringing awareness and change to the subject of suicide prevention. Toll-free number is National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) OR Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741-741.

The Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) complements the work of the AFSP by providing prevention support, training, and resources to help organizations and individuals develop their own suicide prevention programs. The goal is to develop and evaluate centers and programs to advance the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP). Another terrific group offering hope is Humanity Healing International, a non-profit which creates projects for change, healing and the pursuit of peace by encouraging active participation to grow local communities and restore personal dignity to people globally. As you celebrate Memorial Day, please keep in mind all those in need of comfort and share this information with all. Thank you!

Memorial Day is not about a 3-day weekend or bbqs and picnics, and we need to make sure that the real reason for Memorial Day gets passed along. I think we as a country need to do more for our military and assist those who have come back from battle wounded not only physically but mentally as well. We also always have to remember those who gave all.

PTSD is a sort of death on its own. I say that as someone who has it-it changes everything. We really do need to work towards peace..in our international relations, and at home.
If you are so inclined, I’d like to invite you to add this post to my open linky about celebrations, on my PTSD blog Betty’s Battleground. Once the linky closes, it becomes an archive of similarly themed posts so that people looking for them can find them, and I’d love this to be included. While I know many who served, I thankfully, do not personally know any who have lost their lives in battle. My father though, is a Vietnam Vet and he saw many of his battle buddies pass away over there. I know that isn’t an easy thing to deal with, but it is good to have this day of remembrance for those who have fallen.

That’s great they made changed Memorial day a national holiday to remember all men and women who sacrificed their lives for us, not just a few. Also, it is sad that our country does not take good care of the veterans with health issues.

Happy Memorial Day to our friends in the States! It’s always great to honor those who have served the country in war and in protecting our security 24/7. It brings me to tears whenever I see videos online of men and women coming home from service. I’m so happy and proud for their families!

Growing up Memorial Day was just another 3-day weekend to relax at home! It wasn’t until I was older that the importance and gravity those have sacrificed for me and my family to enjoy that 3 day weekend had dawned on me. It’s a wonderful way to honor the fallen <3

I come from a military family. My father is a U.S. Retired Army Vietnam combat veteran and my mother is a U.S. Army Veteran. My husband is also an Army Veteran so Memorial Day is something my family and I know is of great importance to take time and honor the fallen.

We don’t have a specific day for remembrance of the fallen in combat in my home country, neither do we in the country I’m currently living. That being said, my home country only went to war once and my host country, never. So I agreed with you, First thing to do is work for peace and spare lives.

Having veterans in our family I’m sensitive to the needs of aging heroes as well as the current heroes serving in our country’s military. While enjoying a traditional BBQ on Memorial Day we pause to remember the fallen and honor those who are serving in all military capacities. Thank you for this beautiful and informative post. I hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. 🙂
