Earth Day Network’s mission is to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide. Growing out of the first Earth Day, Earth Day Network is the world’s largest recruiter to the environmental movement, working with more than 50,000 partners in nearly 200 countries to build environmental democracy. The theme for Earth Day 2017 is Environmental and Climate Literacy. Before we can solve the dire environmental threats facing us in the 21st century, we must build a global citizenry knowledgeable in environmental science and fluent in local and global ecological issues. On April 22, 1970, the environmental movement  we now know as Earth Day was launched by the Earth Day Network as an urgent call to action to address the many environmental issues that were  decimating our planet.  This year, the theme for Earth Day 2017 is Environmental and Climate Literacy and it is an important theme because without education and action, we might not meet the  50th anniversary countdown to 2020 goal of combating pollutants and climate change. Is it feasible? Sure. Did you know that 20 million people responded to that first call to action? And since that first effort, over 200 million people have participated in spreading the word on ways to keep our planet alive and sustainable. Did you know that the sustained effort and action taken by passionate men and women in 1970 and beyond bore fruit? The collective action of the movement participants led to the passage of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, many other successes and shape shifting environmental laws? If we all do our part, anything can be achieved.

On Saturday, April 22, we will gather at different venues around the world to celebrate Earth Day and remember that, for our collective survival on the planet, it is imperative that we protect and nurture our earth by educating ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities on ways to reduce our carbon footprint and increase plant life that will purify our atmosphere.  This year, there are Toolkits: Earth Day in a Box  and  Teach-In materials to help us learn how to rally others in our circle of influence, educate each other and armed with information, stay motivated and take decisive action to protect our environment. Participate in a Teach-In to help you get on top of your carbon footprint.

How can we stay informed on environmental and climate change issues? This year, there are Toolkits: Earth Day in a Box  and  Teach-In materials we can access to help us get and stay informed. When we talk of the environment and getting educated about ways we contribute to the problem some people laugh it off. What issues do we need to be aware of? As shared in a previous post, we can’t forget that knowledge is power and we must act to change… one by one, we can. Do you think all the outcry about climate change is a hoax? Climate Literacy is Key: Read up and stay informed.  Do know what your household’s carbon footprint is? Calculate it with the EPA tool
What do you know about the quality of air you breathe and the impact of poor air quality? Learn about our Air
Did you know that the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) helps prevent pollution in your community, by holding industrial facilities accountable for toxic chemicals they release into the environment?  Learn more about the impact of chemicals and toxins around you.
Are you ready to handle emergencies such as natural and hazardous disasters in your area? This is not a scare tactic just a reminder to stay informed so you can help your loved ones and your community.

Living Green is becoming ubiquitous and each of us can choose to do so without incurring huge costs. Our actions in the environment can help or hurt our planet so anyway we can live green gets a thumbs up. Are you living green?

    It’s really important that we do our best to save the environment. I didn’t know that Earth day has been around since the 70s. To be honest, I only learned about it when I was in college. I will definitely participate in what we have prepared for that day!

    This is such an important issue we need to pay attention to, and so many just don’t know how to get started. There is so much we can do as individuals to help save our Earth and encourage others to do the same. Earth day is the perfect time to get started and take those first steps.

    For this year’s Earth Day, i think it is going to be important to educate the people that global warming and climate change aren’t hoaxes created by the Chinese government. Climate change is real and is happening whether we deny it or not.

    We typically spend Earth Day at our local community event where there’s either a cleanup or tree planting of some sort. We have to sit it out this year as my hubby is having surgery two days prior to Earth Day, but we will miss participating. So instead, we set out some new plants and trees at our house over the past few weekends. Every little thing counts.

    Earth day is a lovely time to reflect on how this great planet has supported the human race (and animals and plants and all life) for billions of years. I pray that the future generations (and hopefully the current admin. with being enlightened) will place a great importance in taking care of our home.

    I think it’s important to partake in Earth Day activities, especially if we have children. It teaches them it’s important to respect where we live, and they will remember it if we make it a big deal.

    We do try to live green–sort of. We recycle at least. I do use plastic bags, but I re-use them. I’ll have to check out that tool kit.

    I think it should be earth day everyday! This is the only planet we have and we must take care of it to guarantee our existence. My family has shifted to all natural cleaners and I upcycle old t-shirts into pillow covers. It is just our simple way to celebrate Earth day!

    I agree that this year’s theme is vitally important. Until we can educate our citizens and actually come to an agreement on the effects happening to the climate, we will not make much progress in protecting the environment. I didn’t know that there was an Earth Day Network, but it’s reassuring to know they are working so hard on our behalf.

    This is such a great reminder to take care of our earth. With summer approaching I have so many plans to plant trees, start a garden, and a compost pile. It is so important to help save the earth even if you start with baby steps.

    We are looking forward to celebrating Earth Day this weekend. Since I home school my boys we’ve been doing lessons on Spring and about plants growing. I have a bunch of books and art projects lined up to do with the boys to teach about caring for our planet. It’s so important to take care of Earth!

    As an elementary teacher, Earth Day is one of my favorite holidays. One I try to remind my students to live every day, not just in April. I just love The Lorax….so I love the excuse to quote him 🙂

    My birthday falls exactly on Earth Day, and, as someone who is very environmentally aware, it’s an opportunity for me to teach my kids about green-friendly products that they can give me as gifts, such as making creative artwork using “just” leaves and sticks and natural material found outside in the yard, or recycling old products we have in the house to make new things instead of buying something new. Keep doing what you do! People need to become aware of how important taking care of our planet is.

    My kids were just saying how quickly it’s come around again. We tend to go and clean up the local beach on Earth Day. And I always run projects on Google+ for it, one of them, food based.

    One of the ways I think we can also do to help preserve our environment is to avoid over-fishing. In my country, some fishing towns ban fishermen from catching baby fish. I guess it is good to have such restrictions. That way the fish are allowed to grow into adults and be able to spawn and propagate their species.

    I love that this is a thing – we as humans take and take from the planet, but we are often forgetting (or outright neglecting) to give back, and it saddens me. The worst part is it only takes small adjustments to make it better.

    We live in a world of limited resources. Man is responsible for keeping these resources viable for their future generations. Unfortunately, instead of being the stewards, Man had become the cause of demise for many species in the past. This has got to stop.

    Earth day is a timely reminder that we should really take care of mother nature. I hope the advocacy gets supported more.

    This is good to know. We really do need to start being much better to our planet. Sometimes it feels hopeless because the planetary damage is system and performed by those in power. What can us “little guys” do? But we can’t give up…we can’t..

    This is such a great blog post to remind us that we should love and take good care of our mother earth. I like the Theme for this year’s celebration of Earth Day. we really need to educate ourselves on how we can help our mother earth in all possible ways to elude the pollution and all that can harm the earth.     We should be celebrating The Earth every day, not only on the 22nd of April. We only have one and we should really be taking much more care of it because once it’s destroyed, it’s gone. And we want our children and grandchildren to live in a beautiful natural world, like we do, not in a polluted industrialized one.

    Looking through this reminds me of what we as human beings are capable of and with a little tweaking we could be capable of so much more. It seems a shame, but i feel like we are all trying to do our bit to get that bit closer to so much more. So many of the images you posted here are quite beautiful too The simplicity of them is quite something.

    Growing up with my Mom who is very thrifty helps us to grow and learn to be creative and thrifty too. We do recycling and become our lifestyle.

    Wow, you definitely did your research! I didn’t know any of that history for Earth Day! I obviously learned very little about it in school and I went to chemical engineering school so environmental sustainability is key to what we do. Thanks so much for educating me!
