Try The World: A Taste Of INDIA

24/03/2017

“I think (the trend for modern Indian cooking) it’s very good. We want Indian food to become popular! As long as the authenticity is still there, it’s very good for Indian cuisine.” Chef Hemant Mathur in GraevesIndia Interview

Try The World: A Taste Of INDIA

Try The World: A Taste Of INDIA

From the northern capital of New Delhi, with its bustling streets and markets, to the tropical beaches of the south, India is bursting with incredible diversity. Featuring exciting flavor combinations and aromatic spices, food in India brings families and friends together to celebrate long-held traditions. Try The World- India
India, officially the Republic of India (Bhārat Gaṇarājya),[e] is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by area, the second-most populous country (with over 1.2 billion people), and the most populous democracy in the world. Wikipedia

Try The World: A Taste Of India: When I discovered that I would get to write a TTW- INDIA subscription box review on food from this magnificent nation, rich in both culture and cuisine, I was stoked. When I read that the venerable, Michelin-starred restaurateur entrepreneur, and chef extraordinaire, Chef Hemant Mathur, had curated our selections for this box, I knew we would be in for a treat.  Chef Mathur is the energetic, dynamic CEO/chef of several Indian restaurants in New York. He was born in Jaipur and apprenticed in some of the finest restaurants before branching out on his own. He is known for creating recipes that combine classic and modern techniques and he makes the most exquisite, delectable dishes. He also boldly experiments with foods from the different regions and cultures in India and so a visit to one of his restaurants/eateries is a gastronomic experience. To try one of Chef Mathur’s dishes is to cross into the realm of heavenly food; it’s an entry to a place where freshness meets flavorful.  Since I’ve raved so much about him, I will ease your hunger by inviting you to check out any of his six new restaurants, the top-flight eateries that still have his imprint (even though he is no longer Exec Chef there) like Devi, Tamarind, Diwan Grill, and the Michelin Star rated restaurant – Tulsi – next time you visit NY. In the meantime, consider taking out a subscription for the India Box and you will come closer to tasting some of the famed dishes in Chef Mathur’s kitchen.
I’ve always loved Indian cuisine and grew up enjoying deliciously prepared foods from the different regions of the country. Despite what some people might think about Indian cooking, it is as diverse, flavorful, and creative as the people. There are mild, spicy, complex, sweet, innovative, and veggie/non-veggies dishes to appease every palate. They are experts at blending and using spices yet, they also have simple dishes made from fresh fruits and vegetables. The point I’m trying to make is that if you visit India on a tasting tour, you will soon notice that the dishes can be quite distinct and not the expected garden variety we tend to see and enjoy in the West. Over the years, I’ve sampled a wide range of regional and traditional Indian dishes and found that the foods offer plenty of choices that satisfy a varied palate. Our Try The World India Box includes items from across the Indian landscape and they can be used to prepare the simple yet delicious recipe below
Spicy Corn Chaat with Dosas  – via Try The World.
Ingredients

2 ears of corn
1 small potato
1 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp date and tamarind chutney
pinch of salt
1 diced tomato
1 diced bell pepper
1 tsp Masala blend
a pinch of cumin
chopped cilantro and fresh lime for garnish

Prep and serve time: 40 minutes
Preheat oven to 375F. Remove kernels from 2 ears of corn and place on a foil-lined baking sheet. Add 1 tbsp olive oil and a pinch of salt to the kernels. Cook corn in the oven for 20 minutes until golden brown, stirring every 5 minutes to avoid burning.
While corn cooks, boil 1 small potato until cooked through and soft, and then dice once cool. In a bowl, mix diced potato with hot corn, 1 diced tomato, 1 diced bell pepper, 1 tsp masala blend, 1 pinch cumin, 2 tbsp date, and tamarind chutney, 1 tbsp olive oil. Garnish with a handful of finely chopped cilantro and fresh lime. Serve with dosas and a small side of hari chutney. Serves 4

My India Box held 8 specialties from India plus tips from Chef Mathur on how to use them. 1. The Masala Blend from Acanela is made with some of India’s customary seasonings including cumin, turmeric, and mustard seed. It is hand blended to perfection and can be used in a Tikka Masala or Seafood Coconut curry. 2. Connaught Blend Tea by No 3 Clive Road is a premium hand-blended masala chai/tea; it is made by a revered tea atelier and has ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and fennel notes. It can be served cold or hot with milk and sugar. 3. Date and Tamarind Sauce by Nilgai is a tangy, versatile condiment made from tamarind fruit and dates. It is delicious with both a sweetness and heat that will have you wanting more. Spread it on naan bread or add it to your favorite protein dish. 4. Dosa Mix by MTR which stands for Mavalli Tiffin Room is the creation of brothers from Bengaluru who opened a popular restaurant in 1924. This rice flour mix has everything you need in it; mix with water and fry away.

Rice is a popular dish around the world and is also considered a staple in many nations. I grew up eating it and still love to prepare it in my kitchen. 5. Long Grain Basmati Rice by Indus Valley. Rice is a staple of the Indian diet and Basmati is one of the premium rice varieties grown there. Indus Valley has cultivated its grains for centuries. Serve as a side to a meal or as a dessert in rice puddings and more. 6. Sohan Papdi by Aakash. These are flaky, sweet dessert treats made with sugar and cardamom. They are very popular and can be enjoyed as a snack with tea or as an end-of-meal dessert. 7. Hari Chutney by Pico. The company was started in 2011 and the goal was to create easy-to-use Mumbai-style sauces. This green chutney is made with cilantro, spinach, and hints of chili and ginger. Use it as a dip or steamed veggie topping. Delish. Last, but not least, is the Chana by Jabsons. The company is based in Gujarat and is known for its peanuts and chickpeas snacks. This roasted chickpea mix is one of the most popular snacks in the country. Mix with dried fruits and nuts. Enjoy!

Try The World: A Taste Of INDIA

If I were asked under what sky the human mind has most fully developed some of its choicest gifts, has most deeply pondered over the greatest problems of life, and has found solutions of some of them which well deserve the attention even of those who have studied Plato and Kant, I should point to India. And if I were to ask myself from what literature we who have been nurtured almost exclusively on the thoughts of Greeks and Romans, and of the Semitic race, the Jewish, may draw the corrective which is most wanted in order to make our inner life more perfect, more comprehensive, more universal, in fact more truly human a life… again I should point to India.” Friedrich Max Müller

Try The World: A Taste Of India: What we need to remember about Indian food is that it is vast and varied. In a country of over 1.2 billion people who speak as many as 150 languages, you can imagine that the food would be equally diverse. What is certain is that they use locally curated spices to add flavor to the many dishes they share with loved ones. Traditions and cuisines shift from region to region, so expect the foods to be as vastly different too. Do return for more. Our curators at Try The World (TTW), love hearing from people like you who enjoy great cuisine from around the world. To encourage us to explore other cultures through food, from time to time, they offer wonderful opportunities to win free boxes of food. Unfortunately, my experience with Indian food is very limited. I would love to rectify that and learn and try more. The TTW Taste of India box would probably be a great way to do that, especially having been curated by a chef you say is so fantastic! The price for these boxes is pretty reasonable as well.

I have a dreadful confession to make – Indian food scares me. I mean, it looks and smells absolutely delicious … but I’m always scared to try anything, and I honestly don’t know why. It’s time for me to get a bit more adventurous, isn’t it? It’s rather funny because I have a brother who decided to go for a two week visit to India and refused to eat any ‘Western food’ while he was there – he ate totally local and authentic and loved it.

A box like this might be just the thing for someone like me who stares at the Indian food and then walks away with nothing.

Nice to know the box includes the MTR Dosa Mix. The thing about Indian food abroad is often the focus is on North Indian food- creamy, rich gravies cooked with dry fruits and saffron, and often cheese and yogurt. While North Indian food is delicious, so is South Indian or East Indian but somehow, they have been left behind in popularity. Dosa is a delicious and versatile meal from South Indian and can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch and dinner- nice to see it’s included in the box.

Excellent point on how diverse the population is, thus the food would be too. I imagine it’s a place that never gets old when it comes to eating out. And hurrah for a subscription box that features some of the best. 🙂

I’ve never tried any of these products, maybe they’re not commercialized in Italy or prepared just in indian restaurants. It’s a shame since i truly love indian food.
