Motivation Mondays: International Women’s Day #BeBoldForChange

06/03/2017

“We want to construct a different world of work for women. As they grow up, girls must be exposed to a broad range of careers, and encouraged to make choices that lead beyond the traditional service and care options to jobs in industry, art, public service, modern agriculture and science…” UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka

International Women’s Day 2017: A Message by UN Women’s Executive Director

International Women’s Day 2017 – DreamWorks Animation Television

I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples. Mother Teresa
Men make the moral code and they expect women to accept it. They have decided that it is entirely right and proper for men to fight for their liberties and their rights, but that it is not right and proper for women to fight for theirs. Emmeline Pankhurst
If you want anything said, ask a man. If you want anything done, ask a woman. Margaret Thatcher
I think women are foolish to pretend they are equal to men; they are far superior and always have been. William Golding

Around the world, on March 8th, many will gather to celebrate another International Women’s Day. The 2017 UN Women’s theme is “Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030”. With a focus on women’s roles in the workplace, this year’s theme is also, according to the International Women’s Day (IWD)campaign, about being bold for change. So the hashtag #BeBoldForChange and the UN declaration for women in the world of work go hand in hand by addressing the inequalities that continue to stymie our efforts at job equity across the globe. If we are ever to achieve gender parity in the workplace, we must get involved in making bold changes in our homes, communities and offices. The work must start with us.

The World Economic Forum predicts the gender gap won’t close entirely until 2186. That is a huge gap and time to wait for our daughters to earn equitably as our sons on the job. What kind of legacy would you like to leave for your children? What kind of world would you like them to inherit? When women earn more, they are empowered to do and achieve more. WE can make a difference. IWD suggests 5 common sense ways we can be bold for change Are you ready to take bold action in the following areas?: 1. challenge bias and inequality. 2. campaign against violence. 3. forge women’s advancement 4. celebrate women’s achievement and 5. champion women’s education. If you click on the link above, it will take you to the page so you can gain more insights on ways you can participate in each category to make an impact.

“You should never let your fears prevent you from doing what you know is right.” Aung San Suu Kyi

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Women are the real architects of society. Cher
Extremists have shown what frightens them most: A girl with a book. Malala Yousafzai
‘No woman can call herself free who does not own and control her body. No woman can call herself free until she can choose consciously whether she will or will not be a mother’ Margaret Sanger
I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.’ Audre Lorde

Timeline of International Women’s Day (IWD)
28 February 1909 – First observed in the USA as National Women’s Day in Chicago
August 1910 – Attendees at the International Women’s Conference in Denmark propose the idea
18 March, 1911 – IWD was celebrated by over a million people in Europe; right to vote, hold public office and end gender discrimination at work were key issues.
February 1913 – Russian women observed their first International Women’s Day. In 1917, it became official in the region.
March 1914 – International Women’s Day was celebrated for the first time on Sunday, March 8, and this date has continued as the preferred/official day since.
October 1, 1949 – In the People’s Republic of China, the state council decided that March 8 would be made an official half day off holiday for women in China
1977 – International Women’s Day (marked by the UN since 1975), became a popular event when the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the official UN Day for women’s rights and world peace.
March 8 2010 – International Women’s Day – the ICRC (Red Cross) drew attention to the hardship displaced women endure (refugees and others at war) and has continued its call to end armed conflict.
March 8 2011 – International Women’s Day – Celebrations took place in more than 100 countries in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day
March 8 1996 – Present – Every year, the UN adopts a special theme to focus attention on. The Theme for International Women’s Day 2016 is Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality.
IWD 2017 theme is “Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030  and #BeBoldForChange- *See the rest below Sources: UN Women Watch, International Women’s Day.com, Wikipedia

What more do we need to know? Educate yourself on the issues and stay engaged. Every effort we make reverberates in the pond of life and helps someone across the world. If you look at the abbreviated International Women’s Day timeline above, you will notice that the genesis of this movement started over a century ago. With each passing year, and with each new UN theme, we make inroads that benefit us all but, there is still much work to do. When I think about this year’s themes, Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 and #BeBoldForChange to support women’s growth in the workplace, we can join forces with others who are working hard to end all forms of gender bias globally. Even as more of us leave the home to go to work, our pay is still 77 cents for every dollar paid to our male colleagues, and many women around the world face incredible barriers and limited access in the workplace. For most women with children, the work day continues when they get home. So step up and stand for something that would benefit you.

Have a Happy, Healthy 2017!

I love this post. Happy International Women’s Day to you. In my part of the world, there are misogynists that make life miserable for women. It is so common to hear the phrase. “She’s JUST a woman, she can’t do it.” There are women groups that push to have that mindset changed. We are not “JUST a woman, we ARE women and we can get things done!

That’s a great approach. I do think I am lacking boldness and even though I am doing just fine I do think I should think of it more and go for it more.
