Try The World: A Taste Of GREECE

Greece is known as the Hellenic Republic and is a country in southeastern Europe. Greece’s population is approximately 10.955 million… Greek cuisine is characteristic of the healthy Mediterranean diet, which is epitomized by dishes of Crete.[252] Greek cuisine incorporates fresh ingredients into a variety of local dishes… Olive oil is added to almost every dish. Eat and drink with your relatives; do business with strangers. Greek Proverb

Try The World: A Taste Of  Greece: Growing up around the world meant that we got to try foods from so many parts of the globe, and had friends and neighbors who shared the cuisine of their homeland with us. I’ve always enjoyed Greek food because it has that Mediterranean flair for freshness, ease of preparation, and a satisfying comfort that comes from enjoying great food with friends and loved ones; this month’s review is dear to my heart. When we think about this European nation and its contributions to our global history, we can’t help but think of Ancient Greece, the Olympics, the capital – Athens, the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis Citadel with the Parthenon temple, Alexander the Great, the Victorious Youth, and the many landmarks that have shaped its magnificent history. Greece is also known for its fantastic beaches and tourist attractions, from the municipality of Santorini to the fun resorts of Mykonos, there is always much to do when you travel there. That said, I knew the wonderfully curated foods in my Greece Box would be equally grand.

Curating Chef Diane Kochilas brings you healthy, delicious cuisine from her ancestral home of Ikaria, Greece. From lamb keftedes meatballs to trahana soup, it’s easy to experience Greek traditions at home. Enjoy small plates of tzatziki, breadsticks, and dolmas for a Greek mezze experience! Try The World
Taking food alone tends to make one hard and coarse. Those accustomed to it must lead a Spartan life if they are not to go downhill. Hermits have observed, if for only this reason, a frugal diet. For it is only in company that eating is done justice; food must be divided and distributed if it is to be well received. Walter Benjamin

Try The World: A Taste Of  Greece: What is in the Greece Box? For this special journey into the world of Greek cooking, we have the expert guidance of Chef Diane Kochilas; she is a chef consultant and has always loved sharing her vast knowledge of Greek cuisine with others. Chef Diane has worked with many Greek restaurants around the US, and even appeared on shows such as “Throwdown with Bobby Flay.” Her food philosophy is grounded in the belief that what we eat should be based on “simplicity, community, and wholesome foods.”  The 8 delightful selections in the Try The World Greece Box fits that description and I bet you’d like to hear more. The carefully curated food items are aromatic, Rosemary-infused olive oil from Delicious Crete, a food maker on the beautiful, agriculture-rich large Island of Crete. Pasteli Sesame seed bar from Vasilissa. This raw honey-flavored treat has been in the Vasilissa family since the 1950s; they run a farm on Evia, north of Athens.  Spicy Pepper Paste with Feta Cheese from Artion. It is made with top-quality ingredients and can be used in dips and htipiti sauces.  Stuffed Vine leaves by Palirria. This popular dish, from a family-run business, that opened in 1957, is known as Dolmas. It is made from grape leaves grown in Evia and is stuffed with rice, dill, mint, and onions. These are beautifully hand-wrapped and lip-smacking delicious.

When I think of Greek food, I always think of the complementary Tzatziki mix that is served on the side. For my Greek box, all the ingredients can be used to create your version of a Mezze – a collection of small plates with different foods served to a gathering of friends and family.  The Tzatziki Spice Mix in this box is from Stories of Greek Origins and is made from hand-picked herbs. All you need to add is plain yogurt and olive oil for a scrumptious side dish.  The Bread Sticks with sunflower seeds from Baking Stories are made by a company run by five brothers in the village of Stavrakia. They are light, crunchy, and made with stone ground wheat flour… Perfect as a side or appetizer with any dish.   The Kourambies Biscuit by Sweet Magic is an exquisite shortbread cookie that melts in your mouth and leaves you begging for more. They are made by a family who’ve been in business for over 30 years and their buttery biscuits are very popular at home and abroad.  The Trahana Pasta by Sweet rounds off the contents of my Greek box. Trahana is named after the first Olympic games in 776 and is acclaimed as a unique, Grecian pasta often added to soups and porridge. This batch is made with sheep’s milk and you’d have to try it to appreciate the smooth, creamy flavor.
