What I Carve: Joseph Wheelwright

There are two main strategies we can adopt to improve the quality of life. The first is to try making external conditions match our goals. The second is to change how we experience external conditions to make them fit our goals better. Mihály Csíkszentmihályi
A strong man doesn’t have to be dominant toward a woman. He doesn’t match his strength against a woman weak with love for him. He matches it against the world. Marilyn Monroe

What’s a good match? As I considered what to share for this photography assignment, a beautiful work of art popped into my head. It was the two 10,000 lb granite stone sculptural art pieces of faces, by the late Joseph Wheelwright, called “Loving Stones” 2011-2013.  Wheelwright was a masterful carver/sculptor with a keen sense about nature and her many uses. His body of work included many stone, roots and tree pieces, that he collected from nature’s bounty, and used to create fantastic art pieces. The sculptures are/were on exhibition at the Christian Science Plaza as part of the Boston Sculptors Gallery outdoor art installations exhibition.

On a trip to Boston over a year ago, my sister and I took a walk around the Plaza and enjoyed the reflecting pool and the many magnificent pieces of sculpture and installation art that dotted the landscape. We took pictures of all of them but this one stopped me in my tracks. Was it the name: “Loving Stones” or was it the sweet look on the stone faces that pulled me in? Whatever it was, we were drawn to it and took several photos of the work.  The photos might be a bit deceptive in that they don’t quite show the huge size of the stone carvings. Each head is 6′ x 4′ x 5′ in dimension.

Start: Joseph Wheelwright

When a bird is alive, it eats ants. When the bird is dead, Ants eat the bird. Time and circumstances can change at any time. Don’t devalue or hurt anyone in your life. You may be powerful today, but remember time is more powerful than you! One tree makes a million match sticks. Only one match stick needed to burn a million trees. So be good and do good cause you’ll never know what will happen. Karma quote

Later on, I did some research on Joseph Wheelwright  and found out that not only was he a master carver/sculptor but that his work was often inspired by Nature and all that Mother Earth presented to his keen eye.  As the article in the BostonGlobe mentioned, his whimsical pieces were a celebration of nature and humanity; a truly great match. He carved stones into gigantic heads, made figures from roots, and turned trees into unusual upside-down walking giants. He found a good match with nature and used materials he curated to create brilliant art. His work fascinated me and I hope you’d take a moment to visit his website and take a look at his art.

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Weekly Photo Challenge Post: – A Good Match – This week, share a photo of a satisfying pairing from your own life. You should by no means limit yourself to edible stuff — You can mix and match places, people, objects, and activities that represent your idea of a harmonious, pleasing combination. I look forward to browsing your photos!

Have a relaxing day!

This sculpture does define what a good match might be. Made of stone but looking at the other one with so much adoration in the eyes. It’s always harder in real life isn’t, it? How can you find the one in 7 billion people?
