Motivation Mondays: TODAY - BE THANKFUL, BE PRESENT!

Motivation Mondays: TODAY – BE THANKFUL, BE PRESENT!

Just for today, I will not worry
Just for today, I will not be angry
Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings
Just for today, I will do my work honestly
Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing
Traditional Reiki Prayer from Dr Usui.
Change your life today. Don’t gamble on the future, act now, without delay. Simone de Beauvoir

What motivates your daily actions? What have you done today? If you could offer your service today, what would you do differently? Every day, we have an opportunity to make a difference in the life of someone else and to make decisive changes in our own lives. Instead of sitting around and fantasizing about tomorrow or pondering our regrets of events in the past, we can take steps to make the here and now memorable through our positive actions and efforts to do and be better. I started this year motivated to stick to my goal to get in shape and make healthier choices. Instead of waiting for the “perfect day,” I see each day as perfect and I make choices that enhance my day; I exercise, I thank my fellow students and the trainers, and I face the world with a sense of accomplishment just one step at a time. If we pause and give thanks for the things that make our lives run smoothly, it becomes easier to not get caught up in the negativity around us and to accept the things we cannot change.
Accepting the things we can’t change doesn’t mean giving up or letting our lives unravel, it means making the best effort and letting go of the rest. Even when we are having a bad day, we can stop, give thanks for the good around us, seek a resolution or a breakthrough in our situation, and then, open our hearts to a new experience. When we quit fighting over minutiae, we will come to learn that the universe is on our side and that events can turn around if we approach them with a different attitude. When we offer our help or service to others, it is best to release our need to control the outcome and final response… Give and let go. Help and let go. Serve and let go. Today is finite as time waits for no one. Be alert, be present, be grateful.

A Story/Poem: Yesterday And Today Xii – Poem by Khalil Gibran via Poem Hunter
The gold-hoarder walked in his palace park and with him walked his troubles. And over his head hovered worries as a vulture hovers over a carcass, until he reached a beautiful lake surrounded by magnificent marble statuary.

He sat there pondering the water which poured from the mouths of the statues like thoughts flowing freely from a lover’s imagination, and contemplating heavily his palace which stood upon a knoll like a birth-mark upon the cheek of a maiden. His fancy revealed to him the pages of his life’s drama which he read with falling tears that veiled his eyes and prevented him from viewing man’s feeble additions to Nature.

He looked back with piercing regret to the images of his early life, woven into pattern by the gods, until he could no longer control his anguish. He said aloud, “Yesterday I was grazing my sheep in the green valley, enjoying my existence, sounding my flute, and holding my head high. Today I am a prisoner of greed. Gold leads into gold, then into restlessness and finally into crushing misery.

“Yesterday I was like a singing bird, soaring freely here and there in the fields. Today I am a slave to fickle wealth, society’s rules, and city’s customs, and purchased friends, pleasing the people by conforming to the strange and narrow laws of man. I was born to be free and enjoy the bounty of life, but I find myself like a beast of burden so heavily laden with gold that his back is breaking.

“Where are the spacious plains, the singing brooks, the pure breeze, the closeness of Nature? Where is my deity? I have lost all! Naught remains save loneliness that saddens me, gold that ridicules me, slaves who curse to my back, and a palace that I have erected as a tomb for my happiness, and in whose greatness I have lost my heart.

“Yesterday I roamed the prairies and the hills together with the Bedouin’s daughter; Virtue was our companion, Love our delight, and the moon our guardian. Today I am among women with shallow beauty who sell themselves for gold and diamonds.

“Yesterday I was carefree, sharing with the shepherds all the joy of life; eating, playing, working, singing, and dancing together to the music of the heart’s truth. Today I find myself among the people like a frightened lamb among the wolves. As I walk in the roads, they gaze at me with hateful eyes and point at me with scorn and jealousy, and as I steal through the park I see frowning faces all about me.

“Yesterday I was rich in happiness and today I am poor in gold.

“Yesterday I was a happy shepherd looking upon his head as a merciful king looks with pleasure upon his contented subjects. Today I am a slave standing before my wealth, my wealth which robbed me of the beauty of life I once knew.

“Forgive me, my Judge! I did not know that riches would put my life in fragments and lead me into the dungeons of harshness and stupidity. What I thought was glory is naught but an eternal inferno.”

He gathered himself wearily and walked slowly toward the palace, sighing and repeating, “Is this what people call wealth? Is this the god I am serving and worshiping? Is this what I seek of the earth? Why can I not trade it for one particle of contentment? Who would sell me one beautiful thought for a ton of gold? Who would give me one moment of love for a handful of gems? Who would grant me an eye that can see others’ hearts, and take all my coffers in barter?”

As he reached the palace gates he turned and looked toward the city as Jeremiah gazed toward Jerusalem. He raised his arms in woeful lament and shouted, “Oh people of the noisome city, who are living in darkness, hastening toward misery, preaching falsehood, and speaking with stupidity…until when shall you remain ignorant? Unit when shall you abide in the filth of life and continue to desert its gardens? Why wear you tattered robes of narrowness while the silk raiment of Nature’s beauty is fashioned for you? The lamp of wisdom is dimming; it is time to furnish it with oil. The house of true fortune is being destroyed; it is time to rebuild it and guard it. The thieves of ignorance have stolen the treasure of your peace; it is time to retake it!”

At that moment a poor man stood before him and stretched forth his hand for alms. As he looked at the beggar, his lips parted, his eyes brightened with a softness, and his face radiated kindness. It was as if the yesterday he had lamented by the lake had come to greet him. He embraced the pauper with affection and filled his hands with gold, and with a voice sincere with the sweetness of love he said, “Come back tomorrow and bring with you your fellow sufferers. All your possessions will be restored.”

He entered his palace saying, “Everything in life is good; even gold, for it teaches a lesson. Money is like a stringed instrument; he who does not know how to use it properly will hear only discordant music. Money is like love; it kills slowly and painfully the one who withholds it, and it enlivens the other who turns it upon his fellow man.”

Motivation Mondays: TODAY - BE THANKFUL, BE PRESENT!

Motivation Mondays: TODAY – BE THANKFUL, BE PRESENT!

JUST FOR TODAY, I will accept what is. I will face reality. I will correct those things I can correct and accept those I cannot.
JUST FOR TODAY, I will improve my mind. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration. I will not be a mental loafer.
JUST FOR TODAY, I will make a conscious effort to be agreeable. I will be kind and courteous to those who cross my path, and I’ll not speak ill of others. I will improve my appearance, speak softly, and not interrupt when someone else is talking.

JUST FOR TODAY, I will refrain from improving anybody but myself.
JUST FOR TODAY, I will do something positive to improve my health. If I’m a smoker, I’ll quit. If I am overweight, I will eat healthfully – if only just for today. And not only that, I will get off the couch and take a brisk walk, even if it’s only around the block.
JUST FOR TODAY, I will gather the courage to do what is right and take responsibility for my own actions. Adapted from Al-Anon by Dear Abby
If you fell down yesterday, stand up today. H. G. Wells

If you had to choose, what five things are you thankful for today? When we are going through dark times, it is easy to imagine doom and destruction but if we can maintain some perspective and trust that the challenges will pass, we will come to learn that the road to renewal is wider and the grace stronger. If we had to choose five things to be grateful for, we could start with the gift of life, love, health, friends and family. We could break it down to specific incidents and events that renewed our belief in the good of humanity. Even a smile and a hello can make a huge difference in the life of another person so we must not waste the opportunity to start our day by greeting those who cross our path. When we weigh the day by placing the good over the challenging, we open ourselves to experience more of the good because our mood and energy has shifted to allow us to see more good around us.
Yesterday, I spent almost half an hour driving around our shopping center looking for a parking spot. It’s usually packed on Sunday but I always manage to find a spot. I had to pick up some cleanser for one of my sisters and I knew that my local, big chain store had the product. Well, 25 minutes into my spinning around and waiting for someone to relinquish their spot, I decided to check my phone to see if another store had the product. To cut a long story short, I found it at a store closer to home for $3 less than what I would have paid for it at the large super chain. Now I could have spent time berating myself for the time wasted looking for a parking spot or I could be grateful that not finding one immediately gave me a chance to buy the cleanser for quite a bit less. Today, look at your struggles with renewed eyes. Yes, it is a gift to be here and a greater gift to be thankful for our life and breath…

It’s All I Have To Bring Today – Poem by Emily Dickinson via Poem Hunter
It’s all I have to bring today—
This, and my heart beside—
This, and my heart, and all the fields—
And all the meadows wide—
Be sure you count—should I forget
Some one the sum could tell—
This, and my heart, and all the Bees
Which in the Clover dwell.

I Saw A Butterfly Today – Poem by Venos Tricon via Poem Hunter
I saw a butterfly today
Small and green with no wings
Crawling into shadows\hiding from a world who ignores it’s subtle beauty
Afraid to never be noticed…appreciated

I saw a butterfly today
Camouflaged and shielded in self-made walls
Neglecting the world of it’s gentle touch
Afraid to be met with a forceful hand

I saw a butterfly today
Wings new and fresh
Excited with exhilaration
Facing a world with new courage
Knowing it can not be harmed

I saw a butterfly today
Blue and gold streaked the sky
embracing the sunlight’s rays
Fluttering around my head
Carrying my heart on her flight

I saw a butterfly today

I think the most important to remember is that what happened in the past is in the past and cannot be changed. If you do that then you can move forward and make things a little better for yourself.

I love that there is so much positivity in this post. How our day turns out depends on how we see it and how we react to the challenges that are given to us. If we looked at life with a little more positivity we will definitely see how beautiful it truly is. I loved that story about the gold-hoarder, it makes you realize what life is really all about.

5 Things I am thankful for today are:
    (1) My PRECIOUS LIFE – thank you Lord Jesus!
    (2) My ALARM CLOCK – who engineer my environment to wake up early. (hehehe)
    (3) My TWO TWEENS – that keeps me going with my life, no matter what. Love my daughters!
    (4) My PARENTS – who always there for me! I love them both!
    (5) My JOB – Yes! That’s it. I am proud to be a FREELANCER!

What a great read this was! I especially can relate to the “accepting things we cannot change” it is so important to realize that it doesn’t mean failure, just means a different course of action may need to be taken.

Every night I try to list off what I am thankful for through the day. I think about everything from having something to eat and a warm bed to having so many amazing opportunities in my life. Then, I think about what I can do to be a better person. Thinking about what surrounds us and how we can be better people gives us a more perspective on life, and I think in the long run helps me work towards my life goals.

This sentence is one of the most motivational things that I have ever read, “Accepting the things we can’t change doesn’t mean giving up or letting our lives unravel, it means making the best effort and letting go of the rest.” I do that every day, I try my hardest to keep going and making an actual difference in my life and my family’s lives. I try to not let things unravel even if they feel like they are going to. I focus on just my family sometimes but they are my today, tomorrow, and yesterday and I would do everything for them.
Five things that I am thankful about today are 1. my family 2. the ability to have a moment or two to myself 3. having something that I’m passionate about to do 4. being able to cook 5. being in a relatively safe environment.

If you had to choose, what five things are you thankful for today?

    – For waking up, every breath I take is considered a blessing.
    – For the food on our table. I am jobless yet God provides the best.
    – For a safe trip to Kumon center and back.
    – For the perfect sunny weather
    – For messages from some friends

It’s still lunch time and the day hasn’t ended yet STILL, I already have so much to be thankful for.

I love the photos you always choose to go with your posts, and the poetry. But I especially loved the story you shared – I often find myself surrounded by people who complain about their taxes and such (especially at this time of year), and I sit in amazement, wondering how people can be so ungrateful for their ability to share with others. Maybe I’m strange, but I love paying my taxes, knowing that the money I put in is going (in part) to help feed the poor in my country and to care for the elderly. And I’m not naive – I know that there are those who abuse the system. But I prefer to focus on the way my small contribution means everything to those truly in need. Sharing my little bit of “gold” feeds my soul.

I start everyday with looking at the sky. I look for the sun or the sunrise. I enjoy seeing the colors before everything fades to blue. In the spring I look forward to the birds chirping before my alarm goes off. I’m motivated by teaching my 4 yo while he is home with me. I’m motivated to workout and be the best me I can be.

    Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.

This is the second post I have read highlighting gratitude. Can gratitude be demonstrated through one’s actions or words? I, for one, am really grateful for all the blessings God endowed upon me; however, I do complain a lot. My complaints are more about little nuisance, but people see any complaining as being ungrateful. I don’t hold it to heart or anything. I speak my mind to relieve the nuisance in my eyes, then I carry on with my day without having a thought about it anymore. People have said I am ungrateful for complaining or commenting about certain things. I may say those words, but my actions reciprocated to others show otherwise. How does one measure another person’s gratitude? Sorry for my rambling. Thank you for sharing. xoxo
