Rare ‘Supermoon’ In Nov. 2016 – NASA’s Advice On How To Watch It | Video

The moon is a familiar sight, but the days leading up to Monday, Nov. 14, promise a spectacular SuperMoon show. When a full moon makes its closest pass to Earth in its orbit it appears up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter, making it a supermoon. This month’s is especially ‘super’ for two reasons: it is the only supermoon this year to be completely full, and it is the closest moon to Earth since 1948. The moon won’t be this super again until 2034! Credits: NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center/Clare Skelly, producer

What is a SuperMoon? It is the closest (14% larger/30% brighter) the full moon gets to the earth in a year. This one in particular is the closest SuperMoon since 1948. I love the shift it brings to our earth and its unique qualities and energies of strength, healing and magical change. This impending Supermoon was scheduled to brighten the night sky on November 13/14th, so you have time to capture it tonight and enjoy the healing light emitting from it. A SuperMoon is a term coined by astrologer Richard Nolle, in 1979, for a phenomenon that occurs when the  moon appears to be both larger than the norm and closer to the earth.  It is, according to notes in Wikipedia, “the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, resulting in the largest apparent size of the moon’s disk as seen from Earth.” The technical name is perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system. I found some video examples on NASA and have shared them above and below with you. The videos share vital information you’d find quite engaging, and I’ve included some Moon poetry to compliment this special event in all its magnificence.

Famous Chinese Prose Poem by Su Shih (lived in the Song Dynasty (1037-1101)
How often does the bright moon come?
With Wine, I ask of the blue sky.
In the heavily palaces,
I wish to return there, riding the wind,
but fear that in the high places of jade halls and eaves,
I cannot fend off the cold. Rising to dance with my clear shadow,
scarcely possible that I among men,
turn around the red lacquered pavilions,
dip below the silken-curtained windows,
shine on the sleepless.

There ought not be regrets,
but why so often are you full at times of parting?
Men have sorrow and joy and farewell and union.
The moon has clouds and clear skies,
waxing and waning.

Perfection is rare since days of old,
so wish only that the years be long,
to share beauty even across a thousand miles.

“May you have warm words on a cold evening, a full moon on a dark night and a smooth road all the way to your door.” Irish Blessings

Showstopper Nov. 14 Supermoon Is the Closest Moon to Earth Since 1948

NASA scientists have studied the moon for decades. A better understanding of our moon helps scientists infer what is happening on other planets and objects in the solar system. “The moon is the Rosetta Stone by which we understand the rest of the solar system,” Petro said.
LRO has been mapping the moon’s surface and capturing high resolution images for more than seven years. Extensive mapping of the moon aids scientists in understanding our planet’s history, as well as that of planetary objects beyond the Earth-moon system.NASA

How does the SuperMoon Motivate us or impact our ability to stay Motivated?  We can apply the brilliance of this moon to our lives by using the same superlatives that describe it to focus our mind and effort on clear goals. When are we at our peak performance and doing superb work? The intersection of effort and results occur at a supersonic moment when all align and we are ready to take off and shine. Some call it that moment of instant celebrity…. But, we know there was a lot of hard work behind the scenes before we lifted off.  So the SuperMoon symbolizes our inner instinct that drives us to connect the dots at specific moments in our lives…. It is what some call that moment of readiness that we have prepared all our lives for, and it might come once in 20+ years.  Therefore, if we  view our lives in phases; like those of the moon, and if we can seize the special moments before us and perform actions that propel us to our dreams/goals, then we will be fully cognizant of what the SuperMoon can represent in our lives. It is that moment of brilliance when we are in the zone and a rare shift occurs in our fortunes. But, we must be ready to embrace it. Are you ready?

The Freedom of the Moon by Robert Frost
I’ve tried the new moon tilted in the air
Above a hazy tree-and-farmhouse cluster
As you might try a jewel in your hair.
I’ve tried it fine with little breadth of luster,
Alone, or in one ornament combining
With one first-water start almost shining.

I put it shining anywhere I please.
By walking slowly on some evening later,
I’ve pulled it from a crate of crooked trees,
And brought it over glossy water, greater,
And dropped it in, and seen the image wallow,
The color run, all sorts of wonder follow.

Motivation Mondays: SUPERMOON – A range of moons tapping into our super powers

What can we gain by sailing to the moon if we are not able to cross the abyss that separates us from ourselves? This is the most important of all voyages of discovery, and without it, all the rest are not only useless, but disastrous. Thomas Merton See how nature – trees, flowers, grass – grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence…we need silence to be able to touch souls. Mother Teresa of Calcutta

How else does the SuperMoon reflect our drive/motivation?  Just like the phases of the moon, the phases of our life start from our birth through the various stages of development and growth; the ups and downs of our lives, the periods of tremendous growth and strength, through the waning years, the fading years, and finally our demise. The Moon represents them all in its lunar phases: New moon, Waxing crescent moon, First quarter moon, Waxing gibbous moon, Full moon/SuperMoon, Waning gibbous moon, Third quarter moon, Waning crescent moon, Dark moon… If we pay attention, we’d notice that different aspects of nature mirror the cycles of life. If we contemplate the timing of the moon phases and consider events around us, we can see the powerful connection that ties nature to or daily lives. As we contemplate the beauty of moon, we must remember that the moon can be a cover for good and evil. We get to choose and with our actions come consequences …  So be mindful. Embrace the beauty and healing aspects of the moon and flush out all that is stagnant and destructive. What are your thoughts?

Suddenly In The Sky Appeared by Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī
Suddenly, in the sky at dawn, a moon appeared,
Descended from the sky
Turned its burning gaze on me,
Like a hawk during the hunt seizing a bird,
Grabbed me and flew with me high into heaven.
When I looked at myself, I could not see myself
For in this moon, my body, by grace, had become soul.

Full Moon Festival by Thich Nhat Hanh
Everyone is here at the Full Moon Festival.
Friend, what are you waiting for?
The bright moon shines above us.
There are no clouds tonight.
Why bother to ask about lamps and fire?
Why talk about cooking dinner?
Who is searching and who is finding?
Let us just enjoy the moon, all night.
