Motivation Mondays: SCARED – Halloween and other Scary Things and Phobias

Old age has got to start creeping up on me one day soon, and frankly I’m very scared. I don’t want to be old. I’ve always felt so young. And I want to stay that way. David Niven
I don’t shy away from any questions. I’m not scared of any question. I’ll give you an answer. A lot of people are scared of having actual opinions out there. People are so scared of criticism… I’m not scared of people disliking me. Ronda Rousey
I’m scared of audiences. Adele

What SCARES you? Today is Halloween Day and it’s a perfect day to talk about the word – SCARED. We all have our share of things that scare us and you can tell from the quotes included on this post that aging, dying, speaking/singing in public, shaming, clowns, the unknown, and many other things add to our list of fear factors that send us running out the door or into a closet to hide. We live in a world where people are constantly being bombarded by messages, stories, and events that scare us and then on a day like this one, we dress up, go trick-a-treating, and scare the heck out of each other for fun… Ironic right? Sadly, there are people who use scary tactics to manipulate others by threatening to hurt folks, feeding on their fears, and exaggerating the truth, and these scary approaches can have a long-term impact on our psyche; they can make us distrustful, hateful and even vengeful. So we need to be aware of our triggers and be mindful of how we interact with people and situations that can exacerbate our scare-meter.
Do you know what the top 10 Scary Things are? When I was researching material for this post, I wanted to know what top things scared people. As I read a bunch of articles, some are shared on this post,  I was reminded that scary things can also be viewed through the lens of phobias we have around certain things or situations. Scary situations force us to retreat, become irrational and even lash out. But we can motivate ourselves to work through them by seeking professional help, taking small steps to understand why we are scared, and making lifestyle changes that can help us shift direction. Here are 10 top scary things to make you think: Public speaking, Spiders, Enclosed spaces, heights, dead people/zombies, thunder and lightning, the dark, dentists, snakes, flying/dying… and the list goes on. Which ones on the list scare you?

A Story: Be Scared and Ride The Waves Anyway!
Once there lived a village of creatures along the bottom of a great crystal river. The current of the river swept silently over them all — young and old, rich and poor, compassionate and cruel — the current going its own way, knowing only its own crystal self. Each creature in its own manner clung tightly to the twigs and rocks of the river bottom, for clinging was their way of life, and resisting the current what each had learned from birth. But one creature said at last, “I am tired of clinging.
Though I cannot see it with my eyes, I trust that the current knows where it is going. I shall let go, and let it take me where it will. Clinging, I shall die of boredom.”
The other creatures laughed and said, “Fool! Let go, and that current will throw you tumbled and smashed across the rocks, and you will die quicker than boredom!” But the one heeded them not, and taking a breath did let go, and at once was tumbled and smashed by the current across the rocks. Yet in time, as the creature refused to cling again, the current lifted him free from the bottom, and he was bruised and hurt no more. And the creatures downstream, to whom he was a stranger, cried, “See a miracle! A creature like ourselves, yet he flies! See the Messiah, come to save us all!” And the one carried in the current said, “I am no more Messiah than you. The river delights to lift us free, if only we dare let go. Our true work is this voyage, this adventure.”
But they cried the more, “Savior!” all the while clinging to the rocks, and when they looked again he was gone, and they were left alone, and began making legends of a Savior. Zen Stories via Goodweb

Motivation Mondays: SCARED – Halloween and other Scary Things and Phobias

I think that the roots of racism have always been economic, and I think people are desperate and scared. And when you’re desperate and scared you scapegoat people. It exacerbates latent tendencies toward – well, toward racism or homophobia or anti-Semitism. Henry Louis Gates
One of the reasons it’s important for me to write about war is I really think that the concept of war, the specifics of war, the nature of war, the ethical ambiguities of war, are introduced too late to children. I think they can hear them, understand them, know about them, at a much younger age without being scared to death by the stories. Suzanne Collins

What impact does being scared have on how we interpret human behavior? Whether we hold irrational feelings towards people who are different from us or we are sacred of what we imagine our enemies will do to us if given the chance, when we are scared, we allow it to dictate how we treat others. When we are scared, we imagine the worst about those we think are responsible for our situation and instead of responding in a calm and rational manner, we attack others without just cause. Being scared can be a great motivator for seeking answers that help us made peaceful and responsible decisions. But, we must make the effort to see beyond our feelings of fright; it will take being proactive or even seeking professional intervention to deal with the emotional stranglehold that being scared has on the individual. In dangerous times, some people thrive on being scared and use it as a reason to commit atrocities against others.  Our motivation to change direction in difficult times is important, and we must be vigilant to not get caught up by a mob mentality.

Storms and darkness scared me, but somehow it encouraged me to learn about nature and I think nothing’s dark, dark is beautiful too. Bai Ling

What can we do about the things that scare us? For starters, consider the source of your fears and examine the underlying reasons, messages, or family connections to that scary thing. Have you tried another approach to help alleviate the situation? When we have a phobia, seeking help is a great option and that is if we are truly eager to overcome it. Otherwise, find another path to helping you reduce the hold that scary thing has on you…. we must try! Have a Scare-free Halloween!

A Story: Halloween Harry!
Five friends were walking home after a Halloween party. They decided to cut through a cemetery to get home faster. As they walked across it, they heard loud banging noises and a voice complaining. Out of curiosity, they approached and saw a dark form which made them jump. A loud voice said “What do you want?” They composed themselves and walked up to an older man chipping away at a headstone with a hammer. “You almost scared us to death,” one of the five said as the others laughed. ” Why are you here!?” They asked in unison. “My family members are a bunch of idiots! They mis-spelled my name, so I had to climb out to fix it.” said the old man glaring at them. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Like most people, I am scared of things that I do not know or things that I am not prepared for – like death of a loved one or losing someone. After past losses, I try my best to plan ahead and at the same time, I condition my mind that nothing is ever permanent. We could always hope for the best but we should also plan for the worst.

This is a great exploration of the word “scared” I like the story you shared. It is very thought-provoking. AMong the list you put, nothing really strikes me as “scary” but I know when I’m in the actual situation, enclosed spaces, heights, thunder and lightning, and the dark would scare me.

I like this phrase: “Be Scared and Ride The Waves Anyway!”. Being SCARED is part of our system, It is the normal body reaction to fright. An adrenaline rush that our bodies react when something scary, but slowly it subside when you feel relax.

That said, the creature that let and allowed the river to carry it forth to its freedom after a bit if bruising and battering speaks to me. In order to succeed we must allow our Higher being t guide us! We must let go of our fear of success. It really must have been Obsessed for ages with freedom. We can only break free if we are obsessed with something enough to risk it all, let go of our fears and inhibitions and reach for our North star. The thing about phobias is that we can overcome them. It may take a while, but it takes a lot of guts to get over it. And we also need a very valid reason to beat that fear – sometimes, it becomes your last best choice.

I used to be afraid of heights, but I conquered it. I had to do this drop from 80-ft during a trip. What pushed me to do it is that 1) I don’t want to be called a sissy and 2) I don’t want to climb back down. Lol. Point is, it’s a fear that I was able to overcome.

Interesting read! Currently, the things that scare me are being outside when it’s dark (you never know what’s lurking) and clowns – I’ve been afraid of clowns since a little girl. I had a nanny and her daughter was in clown school (yep… it’s a thing) and would scare me every day after my nap. I’m traumatized and the recent clown incidences aren’t helping!

We do all have fears. Out of the list you mentioned, I think I’m afraid of heights, although I’m technically afraid of falling from such a height. I’m also afraid of disappointing and offending others. I like the zen story about letting go. The more we are afraid or insecure, the more we cling to ideas like fame, material things, popularity, etc., but often we get to hurt ourselves and others in the process.
