Introduction to Peace One Day ( 2016)

#InternationalDayOfPeace: The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly… In 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire. The United Nations invites all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities during the Day, and to otherwise commemorate the Day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace. UN Background

What do the words PEACE and GRATITUDE mean to you? What role do they play in your life? On September 21st, we will celebrate both International Day of Peace and World Gratitude Day. Gratitude Day was initiated at the International East-West Center in Hawaii, in 1965,  and over the years, it became an important celebration of The UN Meditation Group. While it might not have the official stamp of the UN, it is an auspicious day that works hand in hand with World Peace Day; it gives us an opportunity to pause and reflect on all the things we are grateful for, and on all the ways many of our leaders bring about peaceful and positive change in the world. If there is one wish I would express about Gratitude Day, it is that we use this opportunity to do good for others, and help those in need. Our gratitude should be shared.

What about Peace? Each year, for World Peace Day, the UN picks a suitable theme that becomes the guiding principle or focus for discussions on peace; the theme for 2016 is “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace.”  The idea behind this year’s theme is that in order to build communities of peace globally, we must collaborate to achieve our development goals; we can’t expect peace where sustainable development is lacking. The 17 areas of  growth that the UN member nations signed/agreed to create and sustain in every nation are imperative because, when we have full development of  a people who enjoy the rewards of their economy, justice and culture,  peace is an integral aspect of that development and it will flourish. When we are fully supported by our governments to pursue our goals and contribute to our development, gratitude is an important emotion that is also expressed. Gratitude and Peace are intertwined and both can sustain our global efforts. It takes commitment, effort and an unselfish desire to see all of us lift each other up and benefit.

“Let us all work together to help all human beings achieve dignity and equality; to build a greener planet; and to make sure no one is left behind.” — UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon

Sustainable Development Goals: Improve Life All Around The Globe

Peace should be a fundamental way of interacting with each other on our planet.
Peace means equal (including girls/women) access to education, health and other key services.
Peace means giving all of us freedom of choice – the chance to live as we choose.
Peace means tolerance, respect and mutual understanding amongst nations.
Peace means “developing sustainably and protecting the planet’s biodiversity.”
Peace means cultural literacy and diplomacy between nations.
Peace means holding a common vision for peace, development and human rights; a “universal aspiration for a meaningful culture of peace.”
Peace means the eradication of poverty, the implementation of sustainable development, human rights, and a sense of shared destiny. UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon’s vision for cultivating global peace,UN High-level Forum on the Culture of Peace

Why is Peace Important? It is true that everyone wants peace but, only a few are willing to work passionately to protect it and ensure that others have a chance at it… We don’t  have  to be war-front heroes to support Peace for all, we can start in our homes and in our hearts. It does have to begin with each of us and our interactions with others. Even as the UN honors its selection of messengers of peace every year, we can act from that place and honor those in our midst who promote and live peacefully with others. Unless we are at peace or operate from a place of peace, we get pulled by a multitude of distracting voices; ours and others, that tell us to do this and that… Then, before we know it, our plans are derailed and off we go. If there is a quality we should own, I would reach for peace and then all the other virtues. When we  focus on things that matter to us, there is an inner peace that resonates…  so, we should make it an important part of our daily exchange. Here’s some food for thought: What trips up your peace? How can you change it?

Peace One Day The Journey

If there is to be peace in the world,
There must be peace in the nations.
If there is to be peace in the nations,
There must be peace in the cities.
If there is to be peace in the cities,
There must be peace between neighbors.
If there is to be peace between neighbors,
There must be peace in the home.
If there is to be peace in the home,
There must be peace in the heart. Lao Tzu

How does Peace and Gratitude Intertwine? This past weekend, one of my kids dropped her wallet after attending a book fair in Brooklyn. She was quite distraught, had no way to get home, and all of us were very concerned about it. Initially, she thought it was taken on the subway as people jostled each other and the opportunity arose for such an event to occur. But that was not the case. As I drove into the city to get her, we got the good news that, fortunately, a good Samaritan had found the wallet on the street and had gone through enormous effort to reach out and inform us all that it had been found. The whole family was very grateful and a steady peace settled in our hearts. Later on, my kid told me that she had missed one of the events she wanted to attend at the fair because an elderly man who was attending the fair had lost his way when they got off the subway that morning and she stopped and guided him and another elderly lady to the fair. They all walked very slowly until they got there and even though my kid is a very fast walker, the universe was reminding her to slow down yesterday and be grateful for what is… Gratitude is an active gift that we give and receive every day. As for Peace, I’d echo Dr. King’s sentiments in the first quote at the top of this page. Peace is an every day affair and when we consciously engage with others in a peaceful way, and when we see Peace as a quality in constant action, then, we can expect to see it and enjoy it everywhere. Every thing we do can be viewed through the lens of Peace and Gratitude.

A Story: The Man and The Mountain
One day, a man beheld through the opening of a cloud, the calm face of the mountain. He stopped every passer-by, that would stay to give an answer, and inquired of the way that would lead him beyond the mists. Some said take this path, and others said take that path. After many days of confusion and toil, he arrived among the hills. A man, full in years, wise in the ways of the hills, said, “I know the way. You cannot reach the mountain, O friend, unless you are strengthened by the power that comes from the adoration of the image in yonder shrine.”
Many days passed in peaceful worship. Tired of worship, he asked of men that seemed great with understanding. “Yea,” said one, “I know the way. But if you would gain the fulfillment of your desire, carry this on you. It will uphold you in your weariness.” He gave him the symbol of his struggle. Another cried, “Yea, I know the way. But many days of contemplation must be passed in the seclusion of a sanctuary, with my picture of eternity.” “I know the way,” said another, “But you must perform these rites, understand these hidden laws, you must enter the association of the elect and hold fast to the knowledge that we shall give you.” “Be loud in the song of praise of the reflection that you seek,” said another. “Come, follow me, obeying all things I say. I know the way,” cried another. Eventually, the calm face of the mountain was utterly forgotten. Now he wanders from hill to hill, crying aloud, “Yes, I know the way, but…”
There is a mountain, far beyond the plains and hills, whose great summit overlooks the dark valley and the open seas. Neither cloud nor deep mists ever hide its calm face. It is above the shadows of day and night. From the vast plain, no man can behold it. Some have seen it but there be few that have reached its feet. One in many thousand years gathers his strength and gains that abode of eternity.
I speak of that mountain top, serene, infinite, beyond thought. I shout for joy! J. Krishnamurti via Goodweb

I believe that gratitude – true gratitude – comes when you are genuinely thankful for something in your life. It’s a place of acceptance. Without that, you will not know peace.

I think that world peace will be impossible since even small families do have their own personal fights and even cities do have wars within a nation. However, this should not stop us individually to be inspired and doing things to make our world a better one.

How timely is this message, I really like the theme for this Monday’s motivation. It’s a good reminder for us all. I would like to say that with gratitude comes peace of mind. Reminding ourselves of the blessings that we have makes us thankful and therefore gives us peace in return, peace of mind that will help us maintain our calm throughout the day and so on.

I liked your story about your daughter and the good samaritan. I think that inner peace leads to outer peace. Unfortunately if you come across too many people who aren’t good samaritans, or have an inner peace that lets them feel comfortable in themselves to give out kindness rather than feel resentment, it can wear off on you. I think inner peace, and peace of nations is also interlinked as if you are happy as a nation you are not looking outwardly in a negative fashion. I’m enjoying your posts, but sometimes finding it hard to stay focussed with the graphics splitting up the sections. Cheers Laura

For me, gratitude means that when someone does something nice for you, it’s your responsibility to let them know you appreciate it. You don’t have to necessarily “repay” them with money, just gratitude in return. When I think of peace, I think of “do unto others as you would have them do to you.” If we all thought like that, we could live in peace.

very informative! I wish it were so easy to practice peace and gratitude EVERY DAY! All we can do is control how we interact to others (we can’t make others practice this) The hope is that the people who DO share peace will role model to others and help make an impact that way! BE the change you wish to see in the world, right?!

great story about peace and gratitude.. i remember before a friend of mine also had the same experience of your kid about the lost wallet. though he lost his watch at shanghai. it’s just amazing that he got it back even if he’s already here in the PH as it was a crew memeber who found it.. we should always be really be full of gratitude for the wonders we experience everyday

If only everybody has the peace within themselves that they can share with others I think our world could’ve been different. Beautiful post!

That story about the Man and the Mountain is just wonderful and full of optimistic interpretations. Peace and gratitude is all about the result of hardships for me. The face of children when they sleep, play…flowers in the field…it’s a lot for me.

Having peace for all would be such an amazing feat. I never thought to look at peace an every day affair. You bring up such a great point that everything we do should be viewed through the lens of Peace and Gratitude. I love this perspective!

One of the greatest hungers of the human race is the quest for peace. I wish we all could have it and practice spreading it. Nothing is so fulfilling than to be at peace with everyone.

I believe if we are at peace within ourselves then we are more apt to be at peace with others. It is certainly a daily practice that needs to be a habit. In spite of all the chaos in the world, beautiful experiences like that of your daughter’s, inspires hope.

Peace–I pray for worldwide peace daily and strive for it in my own life as well. Gratitude–yes I am grateful for all that I have and grateful to my friends for letting me be who I really am and not who they think I should be.

“Peace should be a fundamental way of interacting with each other on our planet.” I totally agree. I’ll never understand how there is so much violence in our world today. And I like the parallel that you drew between peace and gratitude. So true!

In terms of gratitude, a couple of years ago, I began constantly thanking the Universe for everything I had at the moment, regardless of what it was. As well, thanking for the amazing things that will be in the future. I feel infinitely lighter, happier, and more positive since I’ve made this shift in my life. 🙂
