#InternationalDayOfPeace: The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly… In 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire. The United Nations invites all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities during the Day, and to otherwise commemorate the Day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace. UN Background
What do the words PEACE and GRATITUDE mean to you? What role do they play in your life? On September 21st, we will celebrate both International Day of Peace and World Gratitude Day. Gratitude Day was initiated at the International East-West Center in Hawaii, in 1965, and over the years, it became an important celebration of The UN Meditation Group. While it might not have the official stamp of the UN, it is an auspicious day that works hand in hand with World Peace Day; it gives us an opportunity to pause and reflect on all the things we are grateful for, and on all the ways many of our leaders bring about peaceful and positive change in the world. If there is one wish I would express about Gratitude Day, it is that we use this opportunity to do good for others, and help those in need. Our gratitude should be shared.
What about Peace? Each year, for World Peace Day, the UN picks a suitable theme that becomes the guiding principle or focus for discussions on peace; the theme for 2016 is “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace.” The idea behind this year’s theme is that in order to build communities of peace globally, we must collaborate to achieve our development goals; we can’t expect peace where sustainable development is lacking. The 17 areas of growth that the UN member nations signed/agreed to create and sustain in every nation are imperative because, when we have full development of a people who enjoy the rewards of their economy, justice and culture, peace is an integral aspect of that development and it will flourish. When we are fully supported by our governments to pursue our goals and contribute to our development, gratitude is an important emotion that is also expressed. Gratitude and Peace are intertwined and both can sustain our global efforts. It takes commitment, effort and an unselfish desire to see all of us lift each other up and benefit.
“Let us all work together to help all human beings achieve dignity and equality; to build a greener planet; and to make sure no one is left behind.” — UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon
Sustainable Development Goals: Improve Life All Around The Globe
Peace should be a fundamental way of interacting with each other on our planet.
Peace means equal (including girls/women) access to education, health and other key services.
Peace means giving all of us freedom of choice – the chance to live as we choose.
Peace means tolerance, respect and mutual understanding amongst nations.
Peace means “developing sustainably and protecting the planet’s biodiversity.”
Peace means cultural literacy and diplomacy between nations.
Peace means holding a common vision for peace, development and human rights; a “universal aspiration for a meaningful culture of peace.”
Peace means the eradication of poverty, the implementation of sustainable development, human rights, and a sense of shared destiny. UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon’s vision for cultivating global peace,UN High-level Forum on the Culture of Peace
Why is Peace Important? It is true that everyone wants peace but, only a few are willing to work passionately to protect it and ensure that others have a chance at it… We don’t have to be war-front heroes to support Peace for all, we can start in our homes and in our hearts. It does have to begin with each of us and our interactions with others. Even as the UN honors its selection of messengers of peace every year, we can act from that place and honor those in our midst who promote and live peacefully with others. Unless we are at peace or operate from a place of peace, we get pulled by a multitude of distracting voices; ours and others, that tell us to do this and that… Then, before we know it, our plans are derailed and off we go. If there is a quality we should own, I would reach for peace and then all the other virtues. When we focus on things that matter to us, there is an inner peace that resonates… so, we should make it an important part of our daily exchange. Here’s some food for thought: What trips up your peace? How can you change it?

If there is to be peace in the world,
There must be peace in the nations.
If there is to be peace in the nations,
There must be peace in the cities.
If there is to be peace in the cities,
There must be peace between neighbors.
If there is to be peace between neighbors,
There must be peace in the home.
If there is to be peace in the home,
There must be peace in the heart. Lao Tzu
How does Peace and Gratitude Intertwine? This past weekend, one of my kids dropped her wallet after attending a book fair in Brooklyn. She was quite distraught, had no way to get home, and all of us were very concerned about it. Initially, she thought it was taken on the subway as people jostled each other and the opportunity arose for such an event to occur. But that was not the case. As I drove into the city to get her, we got the good news that, fortunately, a good Samaritan had found the wallet on the street and had gone through enormous effort to reach out and inform us all that it had been found. The whole family was very grateful and a steady peace settled in our hearts. Later on, my kid told me that she had missed one of the events she wanted to attend at the fair because an elderly man who was attending the fair had lost his way when they got off the subway that morning and she stopped and guided him and another elderly lady to the fair. They all walked very slowly until they got there and even though my kid is a very fast walker, the universe was reminding her to slow down yesterday and be grateful for what is… Gratitude is an active gift that we give and receive every day. As for Peace, I’d echo Dr. King’s sentiments in the first quote at the top of this page. Peace is an every day affair and when we consciously engage with others in a peaceful way, and when we see Peace as a quality in constant action, then, we can expect to see it and enjoy it everywhere. Every thing we do can be viewed through the lens of Peace and Gratitude.
A Story: The Man and The Mountain
One day, a man beheld through the opening of a cloud, the calm face of the mountain. He stopped every passer-by, that would stay to give an answer, and inquired of the way that would lead him beyond the mists. Some said take this path, and others said take that path. After many days of confusion and toil, he arrived among the hills. A man, full in years, wise in the ways of the hills, said, “I know the way. You cannot reach the mountain, O friend, unless you are strengthened by the power that comes from the adoration of the image in yonder shrine.”
Many days passed in peaceful worship. Tired of worship, he asked of men that seemed great with understanding. “Yea,” said one, “I know the way. But if you would gain the fulfillment of your desire, carry this on you. It will uphold you in your weariness.” He gave him the symbol of his struggle. Another cried, “Yea, I know the way. But many days of contemplation must be passed in the seclusion of a sanctuary, with my picture of eternity.” “I know the way,” said another, “But you must perform these rites, understand these hidden laws, you must enter the association of the elect and hold fast to the knowledge that we shall give you.” “Be loud in the song of praise of the reflection that you seek,” said another. “Come, follow me, obeying all things I say. I know the way,” cried another. Eventually, the calm face of the mountain was utterly forgotten. Now he wanders from hill to hill, crying aloud, “Yes, I know the way, but…”
There is a mountain, far beyond the plains and hills, whose great summit overlooks the dark valley and the open seas. Neither cloud nor deep mists ever hide its calm face. It is above the shadows of day and night. From the vast plain, no man can behold it. Some have seen it but there be few that have reached its feet. One in many thousand years gathers his strength and gains that abode of eternity.
I speak of that mountain top, serene, infinite, beyond thought. I shout for joy! J. Krishnamurti via Goodweb

I feel like the world has forgotten these values. It’s like a little alarm they keep pushing ignore the ignore button on. We need peace so badly right now in this world full of anger and hate.
I believe that gratitude – true gratitude – comes when you are genuinely thankful for something in your life. It’s a place of acceptance. Without that, you will not know peace.
We just celebrated a “pinwheels for peace” day at the school where I teach. It was really neat to see children thinking about making peace and spreading kindness.
I think that world peace will be impossible since even small families do have their own personal fights and even cities do have wars within a nation. However, this should not stop us individually to be inspired and doing things to make our world a better one.
How timely is this message, I really like the theme for this Monday’s motivation. It’s a good reminder for us all. I would like to say that with gratitude comes peace of mind. Reminding ourselves of the blessings that we have makes us thankful and therefore gives us peace in return, peace of mind that will help us maintain our calm throughout the day and so on.
I love your quotes and they seem to strike a chord with me. The “peace” quote by Martin Luther King challenges me to seek joy and fulfillment in the process and not the outcome.
I liked your story about your daughter and the good samaritan. I think that inner peace leads to outer peace. Unfortunately if you come across too many people who aren’t good samaritans, or have an inner peace that lets them feel comfortable in themselves to give out kindness rather than feel resentment, it can wear off on you. I think inner peace, and peace of nations is also interlinked as if you are happy as a nation you are not looking outwardly in a negative fashion. I’m enjoying your posts, but sometimes finding it hard to stay focussed with the graphics splitting up the sections. Cheers Laura
Oh, Elizabeth, I so love this! I believe into my soul in peace through culture. I love the King quote, and the story of the The Man and the Mountain.
Reminds me of another quote by Alice Walker: “Teach yourself peace. Pass it on.”
I have high hopes for this vision to finally materialize. Ban Ki Moon hails from a country divided by war, and I feel his earnest desire to bring forth world peace, starting with his nation.
I feel like our country doesn’t have peace any more and I pray that changes. Peace to me means a feeling like everything is in harmony as it should be. I didn’t realize we had a #InternationalDayOfPeace.
So timely. Isn’t it World Peace Day or something? We were just having a conversation about peace in our lives last night and it really makes a difference if you’re free from hatred, grudges, etc. and just fill your life and heart with peace.
In honour of International Peace Day I decided to spend today focusing on a sense of equanimity. Well, what a day, every single thing that could go wrong did, but I pretty much kept my balance. Which just goes to show, peace is worth investing in!
For me, gratitude means that when someone does something nice for you, it’s your responsibility to let them know you appreciate it. You don’t have to necessarily “repay” them with money, just gratitude in return. When I think of peace, I think of “do unto others as you would have them do to you.” If we all thought like that, we could live in peace.
I don’t know why some people here on earth purposefully go against peace. Why do they want to sow terror and misery, when peace is ideal and very much possible if we let love reign, instead of selfish interests.
What a motivational post, like always! For me, there is something in every day that I’m grateful for and I try to think about those things before I go to bed. Peace is really important for our family, so we try to live in peace with our neighbours and the people we communicate with.
I am not aware of the international day of peace. Looks like we are missing a lot of opportunities to have a peaceful world. i hope everyone aims for peace.
I like the story. This post reminds me so much of what is currently happening in my own country, everybody wants peace but not willing to be a part of the process.
Gratitude is so important to me and my family. I believe in thanking God for all that He has provided and be grateful for all that you have – not focusing on what we don’t have. With that giving to other because we do in fact have so much.
More than ever, now is the time for world to understand the true meaning of peace. The world is in dire need of peace. I hope this day a reminder for us to appreciate peace and be able to speak against war and terrorism and that world leader and influencers take this day as an opportunity to reflect and make an action plan that really promotes peace.
I support peace simply because war and conflict shatters lives and stunts development. also to find inner peace, one should be thankful of everything they have.
A great post with some wonderful pictures and beautiful quotes to honer the International Day of Peace. With all the problems the world is facing today, peace becomes an essential part in calming down and make sure all goes well. I am with Ban Ki-moon on how we should all work together in bringing peace in earth!
Peace and gratitude are essential to have a good life and a good heart. Being grateful of what we have and opt for peace is the way to go for a better community.
I find the quote interesting, but I would have to disagree as I believe we can have peace right now if we stay in the present moments and view them as how our life is to be at that moment.
Peace can only be reached through words and follow up action. Everyone wants it, but for some reason they believe that the quickest way to it is through violence. The two are such foreign concepts.
I loved the story of the Man and the Mountain. Did you come up with it yourself or was it passed on to you?
I learnt about the peace day via Facebook’s notification. I realised over the years, I’ve been very reliant on technology to provide me with dates and reminders… something I should have remembered… as peace is very important!
I’d love to see the day where we can truly say, we are at peace. With the way things are looking right now, the future seems bleak. You can’t even have peace of mind stepping outside your home and into a public place without worrying. It’s sad.
this must be one of my favourite post from you. Peace should be in everyones heart and gratitude too. it makes life worth living and easier to go on the daily life
very informative! I wish it were so easy to practice peace and gratitude EVERY DAY! All we can do is control how we interact to others (we can’t make others practice this) The hope is that the people who DO share peace will role model to others and help make an impact that way! BE the change you wish to see in the world, right?!
great story about peace and gratitude.. i remember before a friend of mine also had the same experience of your kid about the lost wallet. though he lost his watch at shanghai. it’s just amazing that he got it back even if he’s already here in the PH as it was a crew memeber who found it.. we should always be really be full of gratitude for the wonders we experience everyday
That story about the Man and the Mountain is just wonderful and full of optimistic interpretations. Peace and gratitude is all about the result of hardships for me. The face of children when they sleep, play…flowers in the field…it’s a lot for me.
You too have a peaceful and gratitude filled week ahead and this is another beautiful piece of writing from your bucket! I wish our world would become the happiest and safest place to live for everyone!
Peace has become as important as water in today’s violent world. Hope we all understand the importance of peace and gratitude and make this a place worthy-living.
Having peace for all would be such an amazing feat. I never thought to look at peace an every day affair. You bring up such a great point that everything we do should be viewed through the lens of Peace and Gratitude. I love this perspective!
One of the greatest hungers of the human race is the quest for peace. I wish we all could have it and practice spreading it. Nothing is so fulfilling than to be at peace with everyone.
I believe if we are at peace within ourselves then we are more apt to be at peace with others. It is certainly a daily practice that needs to be a habit. In spite of all the chaos in the world, beautiful experiences like that of your daughter’s, inspires hope.
Peace–I pray for worldwide peace daily and strive for it in my own life as well. Gratitude–yes I am grateful for all that I have and grateful to my friends for letting me be who I really am and not who they think I should be.
“Peace should be a fundamental way of interacting with each other on our planet.” I totally agree. I’ll never understand how there is so much violence in our world today. And I like the parallel that you drew between peace and gratitude. So true!
In terms of gratitude, a couple of years ago, I began constantly thanking the Universe for everything I had at the moment, regardless of what it was. As well, thanking for the amazing things that will be in the future. I feel infinitely lighter, happier, and more positive since I’ve made this shift in my life. 🙂
Anyone who is blessed with peace and gratitude is blessed. Peace in life is difficult to achieve no matter how we work on it because there are just so many varied reasons for life to be chaotic.
Peace is indeed fundamental and if we have to live in a better world, we cannot neglect the point of peace. Really appreciating the quote that ‘peace is the means by which we achieve a goal’ So powerful!
Everyday should be filled with peace and gratitude. I am always grateful to positive people around me. Makes my little world big. Thank you for this post.
Peace is very important to everyone. To achieve the real happiness, it should start with the inner peace.

Peace is definitely important. It’s good to think about what steps we can all take to achieve it at home and around the world.
Love all the photos and poems. The video is great also!
We just celebrated a “pinwheels for peace” day at the school where I teach. It was really neat to see children thinking about making peace and spreading kindness.
Your daughter follows in her mother’s footsteps.
Those two words have a very important meaning for our world. Great post!
I think that world peace will be impossible since even small families do have their own personal fights and even cities do have wars within a nation. However, this should not stop us individually to be inspired and doing things to make our world a better one.
Happy International Peace Day! It is so important that we are try to practice Peace and love even if it is hard.
There is no better way of starting a day than reading such an inspirational post. Love it ! xoxo

Reminds me of another quote by Alice Walker: “Teach yourself peace. Pass it on.”
The world needs more peace and gratitude, especially with how crazy things are getting around the country.
I have high hopes for this vision to finally materialize. Ban Ki Moon hails from a country divided by war, and I feel his earnest desire to bring forth world peace, starting with his nation.
I’d never heard that MLK quote before but I think it’s so true! We have to remember that the path to peace can’t be achieved through violence
Gratitude is so important to have these days. A lot of people do not understand it anymore.
I feel like our country doesn’t have peace any more and I pray that changes. Peace to me means a feeling like everything is in harmony as it should be. I didn’t realize we had a #InternationalDayOfPeace.
How crazy she actually got her wallet back!!! I love the feeling of peace, and so much fun to show others gratitude.
I lost a wallet once and it came back missing so much stuff. So glad she got her stuff back like that.
As always, I love the photos. The quote is very spot on as well!
I wish there was peace in the world! I wish that we could all live together in love, and not hate!
I love this!! So happy she got her wallet back, that would be nerve wrecking to go through!
Peace is really something striving for both on a personal and a global level. It’s where progress and growth begins.
So timely. Isn’t it World Peace Day or something? We were just having a conversation about peace in our lives last night and it really makes a difference if you’re free from hatred, grudges, etc. and just fill your life and heart with peace.

I wish everyone would honor Peace Day. That is exactly what everyone needs, just one day of peace!
Gratitude to me is my mom & my man, their love & support, no matter what, is what keepa me going..
I think if you have a lot of gratitude you will definitely find more peace in your life. We live is such a stressful world, it is nice to find peace
I had no clue there was a day for peace. Love those pictures in your collage.
What a motivational post, like always! For me, there is something in every day that I’m grateful for and I try to think about those things before I go to bed. Peace is really important for our family, so we try to live in peace with our neighbours and the people we communicate with.
I think peace is something that almost everyone wants. I just wish we were closer to seeing it.
Hopefully one day we will all be able to coexist in peace. Before that can happen people need to be open minded to differences.
I am not aware of the international day of peace. Looks like we are missing a lot of opportunities to have a peaceful world. i hope everyone aims for peace.

Peace and gratitude to every person that comes by to our lives. Thank you for the beautiful photo collage that represent the topic.
This is a wonderful post, Eliz. Peace and gratitude are two of the most taken for granted, I wish we focused on these.
I hope UN will be more eager to implement world peace. I haven’t heard of this international day of peace, sounds great to celebrate.
Peace–about the only thing I have ever wished for when told to make a wish! I truly want there to be peace among all the people of the earth.
Gratitude is important, it makes people realise they are appreciated and important. Peace is the best choice, even in small everyday things in life.
Great to see how bird can signify peace. and the sun to be thankful on how the day has been to you
It’s always so important to find peace wherever we are. IT keeps us sane and balanced 😀
Happy peace day! I love the quotes. It’s really important to find peace within ourselves.
I find the quote interesting, but I would have to disagree as I believe we can have peace right now if we stay in the present moments and view them as how our life is to be at that moment.
The world feels a little crazy today, so this is something we really need. Thanks for the reminder.

what perfect message for international peace day!!! you are riight….. Peace should equal to more tolerance and respect!!
Wouldn’t the world be so much better off if everyone was more grateful? I know for my self peace can be hard to achieve but important to strive for.
A world without peace is a world without hope, we so need peace and also we need to show our gratitude.
This is very appropriate for world peace week/day! I especially love the Lao Tzu poem.
We should be so grayeful for having piece in our countries. War is such an awful thing and nobody sgould be facing it in their lives.
Great messages! I wish everyone would just get along and if they don’t have any thing nice to say or do that they don’t say or do anything.
this must be one of my favourite post from you. Peace should be in everyones heart and gratitude too. it makes life worth living and easier to go on the daily life

Every day should be peace day. We are all worried about being discriminated against and less on getting along.
You too have a peaceful and gratitude filled week ahead and this is another beautiful piece of writing from your bucket! I wish our world would become the happiest and safest place to live for everyone!
You are definitely so right that peace starts with you and your community!
Nina
I love the peace day video. Thanks for this post great motivational quotes
I missed acknowledging peace and motivation this year. I will keep this in mind for next year. I appreciate the reminder.
Two of the most important elements of life to have. Without them we are lacking humanity
Peace is the ultimate goal for all. It’s so sad when I see the news or even watch the demolition of trees to build more condos in my area.
One of the greatest hungers of the human race is the quest for peace. I wish we all could have it and practice spreading it. Nothing is so fulfilling than to be at peace with everyone.

What a blessing that someone was so kind to get the wallet back. It makes me smile to know there are good people like that!
Peace–I pray for worldwide peace daily and strive for it in my own life as well. Gratitude–yes I am grateful for all that I have and grateful to my friends for letting me be who I really am and not who they think I should be.

I love that you quotes Lao Zu! Always my favorite for wise words! Blessings!
Living in peace and being grateful is important to have a happy life. Thanks for reminding us about this.
I wish we could live in a world of love and peace. So inspiring!
We should always have gratitude in our hearts and peace won’t be far away.
I like how you add poems and quotes to your writings.
Hey just going through your blog posts! Love this one 🙂
I am having a fall blog party Saturday coming and would love it if you could make it and share some of your posts!
Hope to see you there! Happy writing!
Peace is very essential in this world. I love the way you are spreading the awareness. Enmity and war should be eradicated completely.
these two words are closest to my heart. i always aim for peace and as much as possible, i practice gratefulness.
