Try The World: A Taste of ITALY

07/09/2016

“When I moved to the United States (from Southern Italy) at age twelve to live with my father, I was desperately homesick. My nonna told me to stop feeling sorry for myself.  “Cook a pot of sauce,” she advised.  So I did, and felt a little better.”  Laura Vitale,  Laura in the Kitchen: Favorite Italian-American Recipes Made Easy

Try The World: A Taste Of ITALY – 8 Curated Specialty Food Items from Italy

Italy is located in Southern Europe . … To the north, Italy borders France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia, and is roughly delimited by the Alpine watershed, enclosing the Po Valley and Venetian Plain. To the south, it consists of the entirety of the Italian Peninsula and the two Mediterranean island of Sicily and Sardinia, in addition to many smaller islands. The sovereign states of San Marino and the Vatican City are enclaves within Italy, while Campione d’Italia is an Italian exclave in Switzerland. Italy Wikipedia

Try The World: A Taste Of Italy:  When I received my review box for this month’s gastronomic delights, I was thrilled that it was a selection of food items from Italy. I was doubly thrilled to read, in the Culture Guide, that our selections for the Try The World – Italy Box were carefully curated by the fabulous Laura Vitale; she is a chef/YouTube sensation with over 2.5M subscribers, host/author of Laura In The Kitchen (see book link above) and the Cooking Channel’s popular Simply Laura show. Laura was born in Italy and learned to cook at the feet of her grandmother/Nonna. When, at age 12, she moved to the US to be with her Dad, she missed her extended family in Italy and even though she worked in her father’s pizzeria, she still missed the home-cooked, fresh, and delicious cuisine from her homeland. With some encouragement from her grandmother, she turned her heart and eyes back to cooking Italian foods, and launched her YouTube site LauraVitalesKitchen with hubby, Joe, in 2008. She hasn’t looked back since. Laura’s passion for Italian cooking, and her warm, friendly personality have drawn millions to her page and made her a very successful YouTuber. As an immigrant woman, amateur cook, and traveler, I’m delighted to read and share this month’s Italy Box.

If you’ve ever been to Italy, you’d know that Italian cuisine is as diverse as the regions. As you travel from the North to the South and Central Italy, you will experience a wide range of freshly prepared dishes that include all manner of fruits, vegetables, wines, bread, pasta, and so many other grains. Over the years, what I have loved about my journeys through that magnificent Mediterranean region is that the people are as passionate about preparing their foods as they are about sharing them. Every place I visited in Italy, whether it was a Trattoria, a Gelateria, or even an Osteria,  I was invited to try a little this, and a little that… and oh try this Formaggio and a lick of that gelato and on and on…  what makes these memories stand out is that every bite I tried on my trips was heavenly. As you can imagine, a walk through any city or countryside in Italy is an invitation to a memorable meal of superb quality. Let’s just say that Italians love a great meal and they take that love when they leave Italy; my dear friend, Esme, who is from Sicily, has shared many great dishes with me here in NY too.

“My goal is to make Italian food clean and accessible and beautiful and tasty, with simple ingredients that people can find at a local grocery store because people don’t want to go to a gourmet shop in search of items that will sit in their pantry for years after they use just a teaspoon or pinch of them.”  Giada De Laurentiis

Try The World: A Taste Of ITALY – 8 Curated Specialty Food Items from Italy

What is in the Italy Box?  My sea-foam green box arrived with 8 delectable, yet accessible, specialty items from Italy; all curated by Chef Laura, with some recipes included to make it super easy to enjoy authentic Italian cooking in our own kitchens. 1. Egg Pappardelle by La Pasta di Aldo; the hand-rolled pasta dough is porous, chewy, and flavorful and is considered the finest pasta in Italy. 2. Vivace Ground Coffee by Giuliano Caffè;  this exquisite blend is roasted in small batches for 20 minutes and left to rest for 5 days to heighten the aroma. It was named Master of Taste by Slow Food International.  3. Classic Amaretti by Marabissi;  a dessert treat made by the Marabissi family bakery since 1948. They are made of generous amounts of crushed Pugliesi almonds added to a batter that is baked into delicious bite-size cookies.  4. Balsamic Vinegar by Società Agricola Acetomodena; you’d love this cherished vinegar made from tart, slightly sweet Lambrusco and Trebbiano grapes that are color-free and quality certified by the government.

Next on the list is 5. Truffle Zest by Sabatino Tartufi; enjoy an exquisite blend of seasonings made from real truffles grown on family grounds. It’s a new addition to the excellent products offered by the Tartufi family who’ve been in business since 1911. 6. Mushroom Risotto Kit; by La Dolce Vita; made with arborio rice that has gone through a husking process to improve its texture and taste, and natural seasonings grown in Northern Italy, this is a must-try dish at home. 7. Genovese Pesto Sauce by Cascina San Cassiano; this terrific sauce is made in a Benedictine Abbey from locally sourced, eco-friendly ingredients. and last but not least, 8.
