Weekly Photo Challenge: FRAME

“I feel every shot, every camera move, every frame, and the way you frame something and the choice of lens, I see all those things are really important on every shot.” Roger Deakins

For example, in painting the form arises from abstract elements of line and color, while in cinema the material concreteness of the image within the frame presents – as an element – the greatest difficulty in manipulation. Sergei Eisenstein

Frankly, as I pondered this exercise, what came to me was that to some degree, all of life is a series of frames we capture in our hearts. As we go about our lives, we spend portions of our time in the company of others. Each exchange becomes part of our energetic imprint and the connecting emotions that were part of our interaction gets saved in our memory bank. In the same way, each snapshot we capture on our camera carries embedded memories attached to it; where we were, what time it was, and the relevancy of the shot. I would argue that even the most innocuous shot has a memory attached; albeit, a fleeting one. This is why I love photography. I can step back in time and reminisce… even reinvent a frame and its setting.
The two big shots above were taken in the fall on different days. The bird perched after a feeding, and I loved the way the branches framed it so, I took a shot. The other indoor shot is of the hallway in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan. I was meeting a friend and decided to take a few photos of the architecture and, as I focused my camera on the hallway, I captured a precious exchange .. It was either an arrival or a departure but, definitely a sweet, emotional exchange.

Mindfulness helps us freeze the frame so that we can become aware of our sensations and experiences as they are, without the distorting coloration of socially conditioned responses or habitual reactions. Henepola Gunaratana

While I’m still mulling over what to say about our challenge this week… I have had some time to reflect on the subject and to frame my ideas and thoughts in a cogent manner that will help explain my choices. When the word FRAME surfaced, I thought of snapshots, momentary images that float before our eyes and get caught in the cross fire of our fast lens. I loved the idea of choosing photos that helped me frame a perspective. The young lady taking a photo of the Hudson River, caught my attention and I loved the idea of a photographer in action being photographed. The pink Mandevilla bloom beckoned me and I couldn’t resist. I have four potted plant containers with a mixture of flowers, climbers and ornamental plants on my balcony, and three downstairs outside my front door. Some hold pink ones and some red. I added a colorful bokeh filter to the shot and quite like the outcome. I love using collages because they help me choose more than one shot to feature on my post.. I’ve uploaded a few individual shots from the collage I created and I hope you like them. The photos I chose represent some aspect of framing; albeit not perfectly. What would you choose from your collection of captured photographic moments? Frame it if you wish.

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: FRAME For this week’s challenge, I’d love for you to look at things a bit differently. Whether it’s through an actual picture frame, a few stalks of grass, or even the spokes of a bicycle tire, find an alternative frame to the world around you and share what you see!

Your photos are always so inspiring! I think I would have taken the easy way and would have taken photos of different frames. I really like the photos you chose for this challenge.

I love this! I especially love the last quote about all life being a frame we capture in our heart. So true!

I do think we remember things in terms of specific moments rather than long periods of times. It would be great to be able to recall more than just the standout moments.

Interesting concept–to see things through a frame that is not ordinary–I think you captured it perfectly!

This is a very thought provoking post. On the surface one may think your simply talking about using the right frames for your photographs, but probe more deeply and you are also talking about using the right frame in your life. Great!

I recently was coached on a mindful exercise that truly, for the first time, brought me, wholeheartedly into the present moment. That feeling was like no other.
While when I think of framing, my mind goes to the rule of thirds and such haha. These photos are great shining tributes to the post topic.

What a thought-provoking prompt. Good to pause and remember that there are so many ways of framing anything; it’s very important to consider other perspectives.

I love your photo collages. This one definitely represents “frame” since each individual picture focus’ on something so unique and amazing.

This is quite a though-provoking topic. I have not really consciously thought of framing my life or important moments. Need to ponder.

The concept of framing events and experiences is a profound one. It allows you to truly put every moment into perspective.

I love your photos! If you’ll open my heart, you can see a lot of different frames- good ones and bad ones but they will always be my treasured frames!

Some beautiful photos from you and the concept is quite amazing as well as you always do. The quote from Roger Deakins is amazing enough to sum up the concept very much.
