Motivation Mondays: WINNING

I WILL WIN – Motivational Video

Winning is great, sure, but if you are really going to do something in life, the secret is learning how to lose. Nobody goes undefeated all the time. If you can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go on to win again, you are going to be a champion someday. Wilma Rudolph

What does WINNING mean to YOU? Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing more sweet than to taste success after many attempts and major failure. When we win a race or accomplish something that we hold dear, we feel confident, inspired, proud and the adrenaline rush is simply amazing. But, what about what came before and what comes after? As the Summer Olympics continues in full swing with daily winners and losers adding to the count and memories the athletes will take home, I’d like to hit that pause button and remind us that we can pick up the pieces and come back stronger on another day. We live in a digital world where some feel that unless they own the arena, they are not contributing to the world. We see that also in the world of sports where some athletes resort to taking banned drugs so they can participate at the highest level and crush the competition. But at what cost?

We tend to forget that there are many other ways to win. When we help others, we are in winning mode. When we encourage the best in ourselves and others, we are experiencing the ultimate win. When we think of winning, it is easy to think about beating up our competitors but, the problem with that approach is that it keeps us on the defensive. Sooner or later, a stronger opponent will appear and obliterate us. So then what? Frankly, if we would take the time to look inward and focus on doing our best work, and challenge ourselves to give our best, instead of focusing outward, looking at who to trash, we would have fewer toxic encounters with other people on this planet. When we succeed on our own merit and pull others up, that kind of winning is tremendous. When we fail and pick ourselves up without ascribing blame and looking for vindictive ways to strike out in revenge, we have truly conquered the ego and our win resonates. There is a fine line between working at becoming our best and working at destroying the best.

IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING – Motivational Video

To be a champion, I think you have to see the big picture. It’s not about winning and losing; it’s about every day hard work and about thriving on a challenge. It’s about embracing the pain that you’ll experience at the end of a race and not being afraid. I think people think too hard and get afraid of a certain challenge. Summer Sanders

Why Do Some People Cheat To Win? To the athletes who cheat to win, winning is not about being proud of the grunt work that led to the win. For many of them, winning is the only answer, and they are willing to sacrifice their integrity and their hard work for a flash-in-the-pan win that leaves them feeling hollow. They end up feeling empty because they know the win was not earned but taken by fraudulent means or by force. If you pay attention to the news, you’d know by now that many of those athletes caught doping end up getting kicked out, and their years of real, demanding practice and effort gets washed down the drain once they are found out.

When winning means doing absolutely ANYTHING to get to the top, there is a price that someday will be exacted on the individual, and the toll it will take will not be worth the deception. What I find ironic is that people go for easy answers when with just a little extra push, they’d be at the peak of the mountain. When we allow impatience, desperation and our ego to rule over commonsense, we take actions that can get us into trouble and tarnish our chance at real glory. Winning is a wonderful, exhilarating experience but winning deceptively stinks. Why would you give up the glory of an earned win that came from your sweat and tears for a fake win that leaves you looking behind you in fear?

STARTING OVER – Motivational Video

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. Michael Jordan

If Winning Isn’t Everything, Why Bother? Before tacking this question, take a few minutes to sit and meditate on why you pursue the things that matter to you. Do you do it solely to smash all competitors? Do you do it because you enjoy the process? Do you do it because conquering each challenge and reaching each milestone gives you a sense of well-being and enhances your self-worth? You must be clear about your motivation for winning and why it matters to you first and foremost.
So why do you want to win? When we spend years working on our craft and collaborating with others who encourage us, train us, and push us to follow the road to success, the win might come after much effort, and even periods of failure, and the achievement feels fantastic. In this instance, we have traveled the road of self mastery and collaboration and grown from the experience; there were no short cuts, short circuiting others or hidden agendas involved. The win resonates and we want others to taste that delight of winning too. If you are ready, willing, and able to stick to your goals and aim for self mastery, then the win is worth it. If your only motivation is to garner outward adulation, public appearances and the destruction of others, then your win, without the requisite team work, is a farce. Why/What do YOU want to win?

A STORY: A WIN WIN TRUE STORY – Author Unknown
His name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day, while trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby bog. He dropped his tools and ran to the bog. There, mired to his waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what could have been a slow and terrifying death.

The next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the Scotsman’s sparse surroundings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved.
‘I want to repay you,’ said the nobleman. ‘You saved my son’s life.’
‘No, I can’t accept payment for what I did,’ the Scottish farmer replied waving off the offer. At that moment, the farmer’s own son came to the door of the family hovel.
‘Is that your son?’ the nobleman asked.
‘Yes,’ the farmer replied proudly.
‘I’ll make you a deal. Let me provide him with the level of education my own son will enjoy. If the lad is anything like his father, he’ll no doubt grow to be a man we both will be proud of.’ And that he did.

Farmer Fleming’s son attended the very best schools and in time, graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London, and went on to become known throughout the world as the noted Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of Penicillin. Years afterward, the same nobleman’s son who was saved from the bog was stricken with pneumonia. What saved his life this time? Penicillin.
The name of the nobleman? Lord Randolph Churchill .. His son’s name?
Sir Winston Churchill.

Love like you’ve never been hurt.

Live like it’s Heaven on Earth.
Help Others Win and it will come right back to YOU!

Have a productive, success driven happy week ahead!

This is very timely with the Summer Olympics going on. But in life, we need to strive to win against our inner battles – our fears, our pride, our weaknesses. That story about Fleming and Churchill is inspiring. It goes to show that winning is not only about competition but about taking the higher road.

Winning to me is when I’ve done my very best and I feel accomplished. That doesn’t mean I’ve won anything like first place, it just means I’ve done my best.

I completely agree. Every time an international tournament occurs or even national tournaments its all about the winning. But in reality, it is about the spirit of taking part, the courage to come forward and represent the nation, country among millions. This itself is motivational enough for genx to come forward and take part in activities. Winning or losing the game is destiny, the winner is always the one who crosses hundreds of obstacles to just take part or be a part.

I agree, taking part is most important. Winning or losing is part of the game but taking part is the most motivational part of the game.

Awesome Post and I love the athletes vision and spirit. I am afraid thought that I Truly dont agree that the best part of the Games is Taking Part…

In my humble opinion Its Doing Your Best and Go for the Top Prize wit all you got, and who knows you just might get it. Thats why I love Private Schools They teach out children to Go for gold 🙂 I want every child to aim to be the best they can be in everything. Taking part is just not enough!

This post reminds me of Derek Redmond! Winning is worthless if we didn`t achieve it honestly. Usually, it`s the journey that leads to winning that`s really memorable.

I think the spirit is most important. The soul. Yes winning after a hard work is amazing, but you shouldn’t be counting on winning you should be counting on being stronger and better.

This is a great post on winning. I do believe that winning comes in many different forms as well as the rewards from it. Every deed we do good or bad comes back to us. I love the story of the son’s of both the Farmer and the Nobleman. Thanks for sharing the different ways of winning as well as the different ways of being rewarded.
