Inspiration: A Season Of Friendships – Happy Friendship Day!
For everything there is a season,
And a time for every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die;
A time to plant, and a time to harvest;
A time to kill, and a time to heal;
A time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
A time to mourn, and a time to dance;
Today is National Friendship Day and National Sisters Day, and we are blessed to have people in our lives who have our back and will walk a mile in our shoes; both on good and bad days. My sisters and closest friends have been my rock of ages and I am grateful for their gifts of love and true friendship. No matter how we choose to paint our picture of our friendships; be it in broad and flourishing brush strokes or tentative, subtle strokes, we can all find a way to express what friendship means to us and honor those who have lived up to our expectations of it.
It is our great good fortune when we have even 1-2 friends who stay true to us and lift us up when we are down and applaud our successes. To build such friendships takes commitment, trust and sincerity. We know we have a true friend when we can be vulnerable in their presence and are not shy to share our foibles with that person. Today, I honor all the TRUE friends in our lives. Our family members are our first friends because they know us well and have watched us grow, and then, there are others who enter our lives and bring an eternal gift of friendship with them. You know who they are. The gift of birth is momentous, and coupled with the gift of true friendship, we can say that our cup is overflowing … Today is a special day for me and I am very grateful for the friends and family in my life. What about you? Reflect and send them a message of gratitude.

I’ve added the passage from Ecclesiastes to this post because it is a powerful reminder of the seasons of life and the importance of making the most and best of each breath we take. Every day, we have an opportunity to lift someone up and the moment will pass as quickly as the next. Be present in the seasons of your life and make them happy and memorable. When we think about the importance of National Friendship Day, it is not enough to think about those who lifted us up. We must act in their honor by lifting others up.
Why is paying it forward imperative? Because we must remember that a pebble tossed in a pond reverberates and spreads its vibrations beyond the pond. In the same way, we can pay our good fortune forward by honoring our friendships and supporting others who are in need. While we must give credit to Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark cards for proposing this special day in 1930, the onus is on us to be the type of true friend that others can rely on. What we give, we receive. Have a Happy Friendship Day!
