Pokémon GO – Get Up and Go!

Pokémon Go (stylized as Pokémon GO) is a free-to-play augmented reality mobile game developed by Niantic for iOS and Android devices. It was released in beta in July 2016. The game allows players to capture, battle, and train virtual Pokémon who appear throughout the real world. Although the game is free-to-play, it supports in-app purchases. Via Wikipedia

What Does Pokémon GO have to do with Motivation? With all the buzz going on about the new free-to-play, augmented reality mobile Pokémon Go game that was in beta testing and finally released to millions of fans worldwide, it got me thinking why this was a game to motivate people in more ways than one.  First off, it is getting people up and out of the house to connect with other gamers/fans, it’s helping all those kids who spend hours glued to their game in a stationary position to get active, and the best part is that it is free. When you take a walk in the park, as I did this morning, and see a bunch of teens who are never there, walking around and searching for Pokemon, that would give you pause. It might make you wonder why they are strolling around the park and getting some fresh air and exercise… Well, it put a big smile on my face. I stopped briefly and asked them if they were Pokémon Go hunting, and they responded in the affirmative. Because this new game is making a lot of teens get off their behinds, get out of the house, and indirectly get some exercise, I’d say this Mom and her friends, and perhaps others, are glad of the impact.

Of course, the naysayers have been quick to point out that it could lead kids astray and get them in dangerous situations but, this is where parental influence and sage advice will come in handy. How? Parents need to have a set of rules or a few Dos/Don’ts that would help everyone develop some perspective about it. For instance, tell your kids that they shouldn’t go knocking on strange doors asking to come in to find a Pokemon in the backyard; No wandering into the path of oncoming traffic; Do get together with a group of friends and walk around the neighborhood safely and skip any plans of venturing off the beaten path. Heck, like the teens I spoke to this morning, the local parks are a great way to search for those precious Pokemon and then they need to settle down and enjoy the company of their buddies.

“It’s not by rejecting different ideas, but by accepting different ideas that the world creates a chemical reaction. This is truly the formula for changing the world.” -N (Pokémon Quotes)

“Those whose memories fade seek to carve them in their hearts…””All dreams are but a reality. Never forget…” From a signpost and the object in the middle of Southern Island
If somebody wins, the person who fought against that person will lose. That’s battle. A good contender just seeks the next victory without bragging after winning, and without getting upset after losing – Grimsley (Pokémon Quotes)

What’s there to know about Pokémon GO? Whether you’re a starter in search of some basic starter guide or an aficionado looking for the Ultimate FAQ Guide, there is much that is available to fans and novices; the two links I provided to you will get you up and running and ahead of the curve. But that is not the end of it, by the way, my kids were early fans of the game when they were younger, and I bought them all the games and memorabilia; the 3 middle pictures are part of their collection.  So, it was apt that one of my kids wrote a very helpful FAQ piece on how to play the game, and the post continues to trend with over 4 million views. We’ve always been a Pokemon, Hello Kitty, gamer household, and when a product that folks think is on hiatus comes back in such a big way, it is motivating because it shows the positive side of what I like to call the staying power and resurgence of a childhood favorite (for my kids and their peers). The buzz around this new free game is a great reminder to never give up on what you love because, even if it takes a hike for a while, it could come back at full throttle to greater success. Now that’s a motivating example to remember when we feel that our efforts have lost traction and we need to pack it in and go do something else. Sometimes, a bit of tinkering and a lull is all we need to get those creative juices flowing again and to get us back on track. What do you think?

“Having everything go your way is the road to disillusionment. Knowing the difference between what’s impossible and what’s possible… I used to know someone who talked about that a lot.” – Caitlin of the Unova Elite Four (Pokémon Quotes)

You said you have a dream… That dream… Make it come true! Make your wonderful dream a reality, and it will become your truth! ! If anyone can, it’s you! Well, then… Farewell!” –N – Pokemon Black. (Pokémon Quotes)

What more do we need to know? Remember the Early Days of Pokémon? Back in 1998, it was a fun game and cartoon that kids plugged into. My kids got their Game Boys and played the video games with their cousins and school friends. We had the posters, stuffed animals and everything in-between which kept them busy and out of trouble. I remember coming home from work and seeing them ensconced in the living room, playing and chatting about what they accomplished on their games and at school. It helped them develop a keen focus and a love for all things technological. Because their generation got plugged into gaming early on, some have gone on to become software developers, coders, and social media geniuses. While some folks might think gaming is banal, it has created a crop of young, smart, curious developers and innovative thinkers. It is remarkable that Pokémon went through a lull and then came back in full swing with this new free game. I see the positive impact in reminding folks that we shouldn’t give up because something seems to go out of style; keep doing what you love as every great idea and … Pokémon … has its renewal/resurgence day. Have you been a fan of Pokémon? What are your memories of it?
