Haiku: OPENING LINE… Cat Talk & Conversations
It was the first time,
and it wouldn’t be the last.
Our cat spoke English…
“What’s up babe?” he said
Head turned … SHOCKED! Heart skipped a beat
“Yep, it’s me,” he winked!
“What’s for dinner, babe?”
Whhhat’s with thhhe “babe”? I stammered
Wait … this is crazy!
Do cats speak English?
“Heck yeah, And Catlish too, babe!”
What’s with the babe? Dude!
Tangy purred … and yawned
“Babe … is an endearment, no?”
“Humans don’t get it!”
You’re a cat! I screamed
“So what? We breathe and think too…”
He had a point, true…
For this week’s Discover Challenge, I ventured into the fantasy, Alice-in-Wonderland-like world of talking pets. So, this is clearly a fantasy and I took great liberties in calling this a Haiku. It follows the 5-7-5 syllable format but that’s about it… I did veer off dangerously into the world of talking pets, and I hope you enjoyed imagining what it would be like to have a chat with your pet cat, dog or iguana. Whatever the outcome, I bet it would be hilarious and enlightening too. Cats are a fascinating species and have a high degree of intuition about their owners. They can be loving and, when it serves them, aloof. They were, according to some texts, venerated in ancient Egypt, and many a cat owner would admit that they have a certain carriage or snobbery about them. It’s sort of a refined take-charge smarts that I love about our tabby cat, Tangy, and others I’ve met over the years. That said, our family cat, Tangy, wasn’t impressed when I shared this post with him … I wonder why. Ha! Enjoy the rest. 🙂

It was the first time,
and it wouldn’t be the last.
Our cat spoke to me…
“What’s for lunch then, babe?”
First, don’t call me BABE, okay?
“Whatever, lady!”
How did you learn this?
“I listened, practiced … voila!”
You speak French too!?
“Mais oui, ma chérie!”
Our cat, Tangy, is smart … but
Was this real? A dream?
Tangy stared at me…
“Babe … it’s our secret, okay?”
“PRETEND. It’s. A. DREAM!”
But. You. Are. A. Cat!
“So what? Life is a mystery…”
Yep! He had a point…
At this point, you might have considered what triggered this post, right? Whenever I sit at my computer to write, our family cat climbs up on the table and sits very close to my computer. Sometimes, he just sits and listens to the tap, tap of my laptop keys and soon drifts off into a quiet snooze. At other times, he stares and tries to engage or distract me from what I’m doing. While it might seem like fun to him, I’m usually trying to finish a post so, I give him a toy to distract him. Today, I looked at him and said, “Tangy, what’s up?” and he winked. A humorous thought popped into my head: What if he could actually talk back? What if he came back with a: “What’s for dinner, babe?” Thus began the genesis of this post. The creative impulse is a fascinating part of our being, and we are all subject to its gifts and surprising expressions. Relish yours.
