Motivation Mondays: SUMMER #mondaymotivation – What we love about it

Each solstice is a domain of experience unto itself. At the Summer Solstice, all is green and growing, potential coming into being, the miracle of manifestation painted large on the canvas of awareness. At the Winter Solstice, the wind is cold, trees are bare and all lies in stillness beneath blankets of snow. Gary Zukav

What are Your summer plans? Last week, we honored the Summer solstice, a bi-annual event celebrating the longest period of daylight. I was thrilled because it meant we could go out and do fun outdoorsy things for ourselves, enjoy the warm weather, cut back on electricity bills, and not worry about dusk arriving at say, 5pm? As we expound on all the wonderful things summer brings into our lives, I can’t help but consider how long we’ve worked and waited for her arrival. What did you do in the fall, winter, and spring to prepare for the sunny days of this beloved season? Did you get your health and wellness plans in order so the summer would be spent by the beach and at other hangouts? During the winter season, many forms of life hibernate with reserves gathered during the sunny season. They curl up in their homes and periodically peek out to get some air and then hurry back to their winter spot. Humans do the same as some folks leave for sunnier climes and wait for spring to arrive before returning home.

Why do we do all these things and what keeps us inspired and motivated? When I was a little girl, my family took little summer trips to new spots and places. We used it as a learning guide and a way to build family memories. My dad worked late hours and the summer gave us a chance to spend more time with him and to connect with members of our extended family. My memories of those short periods of R&R have stayed with me and they continue to fuel my belief that all of us need our rejuvenation plans = vacation time. Why on earth would you skip out on yours? Why work so hard …

We cannot stop the winter or the summer from coming. We cannot stop the spring or the fall or make them other than they are. They are gifts from the universe that we cannot refuse. But we can choose what we will contribute to life when each arrives. Gary Zukav

What motivates you during the year to plan for summer? Do you go way or do you stay put? Part of the world of work is having vacation time, and while some folks look forward to taking theirs, some never do. Why not? I was talking to a friend about it recently and she shared that vacation time is a negotiating tool that companies use to tempt new hires… they offer it but, they don’t expect you to take it. What? I can understand why some people might buy into that belief but, taking your summer vacation is imperative. Even the most dedicated worker needs time out to regroup and refresh before returning to work. If we believe that our vacation is just an employment gimmick we need to reconsider that idea.

We work to earn a living, to support our family, and to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Time out is not only well-earned, it is necessary for our overall sense of well-being. In Europe and a few other parts of the world, some companies give their staff 8 weeks vacation which is a great offer. It makes employees stay motivated during their work period as they plan their summer vacation/time off; you are expected to work super-hard during the year, and then take the requisite time off to enjoy the company of your loved ones. So for this week’s post, I’d like to encourage everyone out there to take time off to enjoy some R & R (rest and relaxation) time with your loved ones. Why work so hard if you’re not going to take time to enjoy your effort? Tempus fijit! Do it asap.

Motivation Mondays: SUMMER #mondaymotivation – What we love about it

Aaah, summer – that long anticipated stretch of lazy, lingering days, free of responsibility and rife with possibility. It’s a time to hunt for insects, master handstands, practice swimming strokes, conquer trees, explore nooks and crannies, and make new friends. Darrell Hammond

What prompted this summer plans redux? Aside from the conversation I had earlier with a friend, I was home this weekend with a summer flu. As I coughed, sneezed and struggled to breathe, I realized I won’t be able to take my walks on the Hudson River, or capture some early blooms in the garden or even enjoy a picnic with friends in the park. When we have good health and the opportunity to kick back and enjoy the fruits of our hard work, it behooves us to do so. You don’t have to leave town to enjoy the summer, do things around your neighborhood. What’s not to love about the many joys of summer? What’s not to love about the fresh seasonal fruits and veggies? What’s not to love about Ice cream and other cold summertime foods and languid days spent in the sun? As June ends and July and August beckon, make time to indulge in some summer activities and capture your memories for posterity… Now that’s worth getting motivated for, no?

This is probably the first year in a long time where I don’t really have any summer plans. I do have a big trip planned for the fall, so perhaps that is why I am keeping my summer low key.

Today I got motivated. I cleaned the house then headed out with the kids to the pool. Sometimes you just need a spur of the moment trip to make you happy and cheerful.
