Never permit a dichotomy to rule your life, a dichotomy in which you hate what you do so you can have pleasure in your spare time. Look for a situation in which your work will give you as much happiness as your spare time. Pablo Picasso
We don’t receive wisdom; we must discover it for ourselves after a journey that no one can take for us or spare us. Marcel Proust

One of the reasons I look forward to the weekly photography challenge is the chance to push myself to step out of the comfort of my preferred subjects and try to look through my lens differently. Some weeks the chosen subject is familiar and comfortable and some weeks are far removed from the familiar for me. The unfamiliar subjects are great teachers because they force me to step back and meditate on the subject and then come back to it with a renewed zeal to grasp what is required. Now, if you participate in these weekly, creative exercises, you’d know that the Moderators give us examples and accompanying stories; we have a frame of reference when we choose our own shots. It helps a lot as we can start to imagine our own shots.

I left the woods for as good a reason as I went there. Perhaps it seemed to me that I had several more lives to live and could not spare any more time for that one. Henry David Thoreau
Pray thee, spare, thyself at times: for it becomes a wise man sometimes to relax the high pressure of his attention to work. Thomas Aquinas

Whenever I think about the photography topics, a visual usually appears in my mind and then I go take the shot or look for it from shots I’ve already taken. Keeping in mind that the key rule is that we must take our photos ourselves, there are times when I fall short of my ideal shot and I have to go outside and create something or search through my files for a shot or two. That said, this challenge was a tad more difficult for me to do and not for lack of examples; I just couldn’t find the photos in my mind’s eye that really spoke to me on the subject of spare, sparse or even simple. Anyway, I couldn’t get those spare and even spare desert settings out of my head but, I persevered and, gradually, a quiet settled on my spirit and a few photos I took in the last couple of years danced before my eyes … I decided to go with what spoke to me best. Hope you like them!
On another note, since this is Memorial Day weekend, let’s keep our activities safe and simple. Wishing all a restful and safe Memorial Day weekend!

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Photo Challenge: SPARE This week, get inspired by the many connotations of the word “spare.” Spare has many connotations: it can mean one too many, or sparse, or even to release something from harm. I’m looking forward to seeing your interpretations! Bonus points to those who tell the story behind their “spare” inspiration.

Positive Motivation Tip: With effort, even the most spare subjects can come to life and engage us. Did deep!

The pictures are gorgeous. There is something very peaceful about a single object of color or texture standing out in a photo.

Beautiful pictures as always. I love the big water and a duck who seems so small.

I like the photos you went with. It’s fun to try to imagine how you related each of them to “spare.”

I’m a visual person too so I can completely understand where you’re coming from with the visuals! I think that’s just how creative peoples’ minds work. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

This is a difficult challenge but for me you nailed it with the buds and single red berry!

Thank you! It was very difficult to truly visualize anything but what the Moderator shred with us. I could only think of the desert. Hahaha! 🙂

I take photographs whenever I feel lonely and depressed. I know it is an unusual habit, but this allows me to be in a jovial state. Photography is an art.

Your shots are lovely! Spare is not an easy subject if you ask me. I was thinking just now of what shots I’d do for this challenge. I don’t think there would be much for me since I am in the city. Love all the nature shots & the scenery!

What a great way to celebrate the memorial day, a day of capturing happy moments. I may never have the professional talent in photography but I can capture special moments too!

I always love seeing your collection of photos. You do a great job capturing different angles, stories, ect. I need to take a photography course so that I can better capture my own stories.

Spare to me would mean to spare something in the sense to leave it alone… In your pictures I guess you’ve taken that very meaning.

This is so true! So many people settle for a job they hate so that they can have fun in their spare time. Then they find that the disdain for their job spills over into their personal time.

So nice your statement how Spare could mean too many or too little. Very few words can go both ways like this one. The richness of meaning leaves interpretation to the artistry of the photographer.

Love the quote, I get irritated when people pick blower buds that haven’t bloomed. Its like picking friends, a mate or business partner. Its cool to look at potential, but you’ve got to bloom first.
