Prince #Blacklivesmatter at the #Grammyโ€Œs: “Like books and Black lives, albums still matter.”

Did you listen to his music over the years? RIP – Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958 โ€“ April 21, 2016). I was on my way to an appointment when the phone rang. I picked it up and it was one of my best friends, Diahann, on the other end. “Have you heard what happened to Prince?” She asked with hesitation in her voice.ย  “What do you mean, what happened to Prince?” I said to her, a bit annoyed that she might have been referring to his health scare in Atlanta and trying to be coy.ย  “Prince is DEAD!” She said sadly. At that point, I lost it. I yelled at her, dropped the line and totally lost it. Prince was part of my musical experience when I moved to the USA. I danced to his music, bought his albums/CDs and saw the Purple Rain movie more times than I care to divulge. He was a legendary musician, a prolific artist who released 39 albums in his lifetime, sold over 100 million records, won seven Grammys and got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. When he performed, he made his guitars talk to us from a place deep inside of him/us that only spirit can touch.ย  His musical genius was on a very high frequency and he knew how to rock out and bring it on. When he performed on stage, he held nothing back; he left every bit of himself and his music on that stage … he was a consummate artist extraordinaire!

After the news settled in, I was left in such a state of shock, I could barely talk. Then the emotional roller coaster kicked in; I was furious at myself for not buying a ticket to his last performance in NY, even though I gotย the notification and found out, by the time I logged in, that it was sold out. I was mad at myself for not connecting when the opportunity arose because I was too shy …ย  to respond appropriately.ย  I was devastated that he left this world so soon, and just after telling us that his memoir would be out in the coming year. Prince was not only a musical prodigy and cultural icon, he was a spiritual man of great faith, a superlative talent and a big generous heart. He will be sorely missed…

What are your memories of Prince? I remember the first time I saw him perform, his androgyny and exquisite, charismatic energy reminded me of David Bowie; he had that complex duality that made both men and women love him. He had the most expressive, hypnotic eyes and a sexiness that wasn’t forced or nasty. His timing, pitch and execution were perfect; after all he was a perfectionist where his music was concerned and he left his audience salivating for more. He could glance at the audience and send them into a frenzy with just that sly look, and he knew his craft, honed it, and honored it fully. Prince had enormous integrity and during that sad period when he battled his record company for his artistic freedom, he didn’t compromise. He danced better than most and dressed in his unique flamboyant way; always pushing the gender bender envelope while staying supremely all male in his enigmatic way.

Prince was the epitome of musical brilliance; he was an exceptional talent who lived and breathed his craft… His life was his music, his love of the creator and all its creation. He was known to be a generous man and,ย  last night on CNN, several of his friends shared their memories of his generosity and how he gave quietly to many in need. It is with tremendous sadness and gratitude for a life well lived that I say goodbye.ย  I remain sanguine that his death would ignite the best in the rest of us who loved and admired him. It is perhaps remarkable that today is Earth Day and we are all mourning the passage of a musical giant who gave his all on this earth, and did so in a way that lifted up so many.

On Reflections: Did you know Prince wrote music for a slew of pretty big music stars? From Madonna to Mariah Carey, Dru Hill, Chaka Khan, LeAnn Rimes, Sinead O’Connor and others. Last night, I was talking with my young adult twins about Prince and his music. They both expressed their sadness over his death. One child remembered hearing some of his music and enjoying it, while the other said that even though the name of several popular Prince songs came to mind, the sounds and lyrics didn’t. As I thought about it, it became clear why some younger folks didn’t get to enjoy the full range of his concerts and music.ย  It struck me because now,ย  in retrospect, I understand why.

During the period of those nasty battles over his music and artistic freedom/integrity, we couldn’t get his music readily or directly on YouTube for many years.ย  He couldn’t use his name and, therefore, he was variously known as the Artist Formerly known as Prince and then as a bunch of symbols. It saddens me that his superb lyrical gifts and keen composition talent weren’t fully enjoyed by the millennial. It saddens me that he won’t be here anymore to connect with that age group and pull them into his rarefied musical world, his sharp witty sense of humor, and his sheer brilliance and love of humanity.ย  His life was a high octave celebration and we are all the richer for it! I will miss him deeply. REST In PEACE – Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958 โ€“ April 21, 2016). My condolences go out to his loved ones and to all his fans around the world. May his legacy and light burn brightly.

Wonderful tribute to this man. It was a shock to hear about his passing this week, right after hearing on the radio two days prior about him having a little bit of flu but recovering fine. He was a legend for sure!

I’m very sorry that I’m one of those millenials who wasn’t touched yet by his music. I didn’t know he had a lot of names, and any of his hits, but after this I’ll go on music streaming apps to listen to what I’ve missed from your beloved music icon.

I remember when I was a kid and I watched Prince perform in television. He was really passionate about his music, especially when he played his guitars. He’s such a great loss to the music industry because he has touched many people, even those here in the Philippines.

I never knew of Prince. But, if one of my favorite artists dies, I would be sad too.
