Motivation Mondays: EARTH DAY

18/04/2016

“Sooner or later, we will have to recognize that the Earth has rights, too, to live without pollution. What mankind must know is that human beings cannot live without Mother Earth, but the planet can live without humans.” Evo Morales

Motivation Mondays: EARTH DAY – All we love about our earth and our trees

This Earth Day and beyond, let’s make big stuff happen. Let’s plant 7.8 billion trees for the Earth. Let’s divest from fossil fuels and make cities 100% renewable. Let’s take the momentum from the Paris Climate Summit and build on it. Earthday.org
He that plants trees loves others besides himself. Thomas Fuller

46 years ago, a highly motivated movement launched the Earth Day Network as an urgent call to action to address the many environmental issues that were slowly, but surely, decimating our planet.  This year, for Earth Day 2016, the theme is Trees for the Earth, and the goal is to plant 7.8 billion of them.  Trees help the environment by combating pollutants and climate change. Is it feasible? Sure. If we all do our part, anything can be achieved.  On Friday, April 22, we will gather at different venues around the world to celebrate Earth Day and remember that, for our collective survival on the planet, it is imperative that we protect and nurture our earth by reducing our carbon footprint and increasing plant life that purify our atmosphere.  When we participate in taking actions that sustain our planet, and remind our friends and family to be a bit more sensitive to how they use our natural resources, we are performing a powerful act.

Did you know that 20 million people responded to that first call to action? Did you know that the effort bore fruit because it led to the passage of the Clean Air ActClean Water ActEndangered Species Act and other shape shifting environmental laws? So, don’t you believe the naysayers who think the actions of a few can’t effect change. It can because when our hearts and minds agree that our actions can make a difference, we can move mountains. When we spread the word, we are reminding ourselves and others that we are beneficiaries of Mother Earth’s largess and that maintaining a sustainable planet and pollution free environment is a crucial legacy to leave to our children.  Making sure our plant is thriving is vital to our survival too. I don’t want my children to inherit a futuristic, toxic world with no trees and little animal life. However, if we continue to abuse our earth, we will soon find ourselves living in a gas filled world with masks and steel as our daily companions.

“I’m fascinated by beautiful scenery and what we have here on this Earth.” Matt Lanter

Earth teach me to forget myself as melted snow forgets its life. Earth teach me resignation as the leaves which die in the fall. Earth teach me courage as the tree which stands all alone. Earth teach me regeneration as the seed which rises in the spring. William Alexander
Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect. Chief Seattle

As Earth Day approaches this Friday, I can’t help but think of the many ways each of us contribute to sustaining or destroying our environment. We act in both conscious and unconscious ways by discarding our garbage carelessly and adding our share of toxic waste on Mother Earth. The EPA covers a number of key areas where environmental concerns are exacerbated by our actions so we can all do better. Instead of giving you a shopping list of Dos and Don’ts, I invite you to take some time over the coming days and weeks to explore the key areas addressed by the EPA. Knowledge is power, and an educated populace can make a difference. Arm yourself with the facts and then choose to do those things that make a difference in your household.

What are the Issues?:
Do you think all the outcry about climate change is hooey? Read up and stay informed.  Do know what your household’s carbon footprint is? Calculate it with the EPA tool
What do you know about the quality of air you breathe and the impact of poor air quality? Learn about our Air
Did you know that the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) helps prevent pollution in your community, by holding industrial facilities accountable for toxic chemicals they release into the environment?  Learn more about the impact of chemicals and toxins around you.
Are you ready to handle emergencies such as natural and hazardous disasters in your area? This is not a scare tactic just a reminder to stay informed so you can help your loved ones and your community.

Living Green is becoming ubiquitous and each of us can choose to do so without incurring huge costs. Our actions in the environment can help or hurt our planet so anyway we can live green gets a thumbs up. Are you living green?
Did you know that without health and safety regulations, environmental hazards can pose a huge threat to our lives? Learn how to stay healthy and safe.
As much as we enjoy the beautiful landscapes around us, there is still a great need for us to stay informed about land and clean up issues that occur when toxins are spilled into our sewage and streams or dumped in our oceans. The impact of such pollutants on our land can be long ranging.
By now, we all know about the hazards of pesticides in our food, water, air and homes. We must educate ourselves to ensure that our kids are not exposed to high levels of dangerous toxins and pesticides…
Do you know how to manage your waste and protect your water supply?  Everything we do creates waste and we must learn about safe and practical ways to dispose of it.  When our water supply is polluted, it can lead to long term illness and life threatening disease. What do you know about your water supply?

Everything is connected. Connectivity is going to be the key to addressing these issues, like contaminants and climate change. They’re not just about contaminants on your plate. They’re not just about the ice depleting. They’re about the issue of humanity. What we do every day — whether you live in Mexico, the United States, Russia, China … can have a very negative impact on an entire way of life for an entire people far away from that source.  Sheila Watt-Cloutier
Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed. Mahatma Gandhi

Today is also Patriot’s Day, which marks the remembrance of the first battle for liberty and union in the American Revolutionary war. When I think of this day and the battle to protect our planet, I can see a symbolic connection. At different points in our lives, we are called to take a stand for what we believe and what we can no longer tolerate. We can stand for something that unites us and pulls us in the direction of growth and good, or we can sit back and watch all around us perish. Check out the Earth Day Toolkit to help you get creative with things you can do in your community. What do you stand for in this conversation about our planet?
