Life is a song – sing it. Life is a game – play it. Life is a challenge – meet it. Life is a dream – realize it. Life is a sacrifice – offer it. Life is love – enjoy it. Sai Baba
Who cares about the clouds when we’re together? Just sing a song and bring the sunny weather. Dale Evans
The true treasure lies within. It is the underlying theme of the songs we sing, the shows we watch and the books we read…. What is that treasure? Love. Love is the nature of the Divine. Radhanath Swami

What does it mean to “Sing Your Song“? I was chatting with a dear friend over the weekend when the conversation turned to skills we have and how to maximize our skills and gifts. She told me about someone she knew, from her college days, who had spent many years pursuing a career in a field that gave him little or no joy. When she asked him why he continued to work in that field, he said he was doing it for the money. He had always wanted to be a teacher but didn’t think he could earn a ton of money in that arena. She encouraged him to seek an outlet for his true heart’s desire, by volunteering/tutoring or mentoring others, and see how he can apply his teaching skills to another endeavor.

A few years later, she bumped into him on a busy street and he was the picture of joy. He informed her that a year after their conversation, he had packed his bags, relocated to another state and started a teaching career. He now gets summers off and is able to travel the world and enjoy his other interests. By embracing the song his heart wanted to truly sing, he found a career path that motivated him and meshed with his life’s calling; soon, other creative doors opened up to him. And the money part? He makes more now than he did at the job he didn’t love. Follow your calling. Give it your best shot and trust that the rest will fall into place.

Do YOU: Are you singing your song or are you busy trying to be someone else or everything to everybody? We come into this world with unique talents and skills and because they might seem so easy to us, we discount them in pursuit of things that might not show our best and brightest gifts.  To help us get motivated along the way, and put a smile on our faces today, I’ve added links to some flash mob songs for your enjoyment. Take a look at them when you have a moment. Until we honor our own song, we will not fully express our joie de vivre!

A Story: The Bird Who Couldn’t Sing
Many moons ago, there lived a colorful bird in a giant aviary owned by an ornithologist who loved collecting beautiful and exotic birds. Because this particular bird, a Rainbow Lorikeet was the only one of its kind in the aviary, it had no idea that it belonged to a species that could sing and even make a lot of noise.  Every day, as the Nightingales, Hoopoes, Quetzals, Golden Pheasants, Mockingbirds, African Crowned Cranes, Northern Cardinals, Kingfishers, Birds of Paradise and other soulful birds, sang their morning and evening songs, the little Lorikeet sat and watched and envied the others for their soulful tunes.
One day, a Hoopoe approached the little bird and paid him a compliment. “You have such beautiful plumes and I bet you can sing just as brightly.” The Lorikeet smiled and then shyly said, “I might be colorful but when I try to sing, I hear croaks not songs. I can’t compete with the rest of you.” The Hoopoe was astonished, as it remembered seeing a flock of Lorikeets noisily singing away as they scavenged a farm near where it was caught. The Hoopoe urged the Lorikeet to sing anyway and to not pay attention to how the other birds sounded. ” Sing your own song and that will be good enough. You don’t have to sound like the rest of us.” The Hoopoe said and so, the Lorikeet agreed to give it a try.
The next morning, as the early morning birds started their songs, he pulled himself up and started to sing. Soon the aviary was filled with the chorus of many birds chirping away; much to the enjoyment of all who came to see the birds. The Lorikeet was confounded that once he gave voice to his song, no one stopped or criticized him. They all sang along; each different sound adding a complexity and complementary tune to the others… Sing Your Song! A Bird Story © by E Obih-Frank

Som Sabadell flashmob – BANCO SABADELL

Sing me a new song; the world is transfigured; all the Heavens are rejoicing. Friedrich Nietzsche
Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance. Khalil Gibran

Why Wait to Sing your song? Have you imagined doing something that you’ve always loved but are afraid to do it for a variety of reasons? Yo are not alone. We all have dreams we hold close to our sleeves waiting for the perfect time and day to execute that dream. We have hobbies we enjoy and yet we don’t share them with others who can encourage us because we are fearful of criticism. We have interests and skills that come very easy to us but because we haven’t received encouragement from others, we believe they hold no value. Well, here’s a secret, stop waiting for others to give you permission to follow a dream or pursue an interest to its zenith. We live in a highly competitive world and not everyone gets the opportunity to meet a kind or encouraging mentor or a loved one who shows maximum interest in ensuring that our dreams become achievable goals. Some folks do but, the rest of us must make an extra effort to follow through even when our fears tell us to stop. Why? Because when we make that extra effort, the universe rallies to find us helpers along the route to reaching our goals.

A Story: Som Sabadell’s Song
On May 19, 2012, for the 130th anniversary of the founding of Banco Sabadell. The bank wanted to pay homage to the city they loved by initiating a campaign “Som Sabadell” (We are Sabadell). Through much effort and collaborations, they were able to create a flashmob that was arranged as a final culmination with the participation of 100 people from the Vallès Symphony Orchestra, the Lieder, Amics de l’Òpera and Coral Belles Arts choirs. Everyone within hearing distance of the joyful sound gathered to enjoy it and participate in singing along. It was a dream that started in one company and yet, the song they sang touched many lives and continues to put a smile on the faces of folks who listen to it on YouTube…. Start your dream today and see how far you will come. Are you singing your song? Share your thoughts in the comments. TY!

Birds sing after a storm; why shouldn’t people feel as free to delight in whatever sunlight remains to them? Rose Kennedy
When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home. Tecumseh

Start Today: Sometimes we need others to help us pull that delightful song out of us and when we do finally embrace our song, it can be magical. We don’t want to be on our death-bed filled with regrets. So what are we waiting for? We have to start somewhere, some time, and some day, and there is no better time like the present. Don’t let the lack of mentors and cheerleaders stop you … they will show up as you push through the fear and sing your song.

A Story:  Performing Miracles – Not Required
When Bankei was preaching at Ryumon temple, a Shinshu priest, who believed in salvation through repetition of the name of the Buddha of Love, was jealous of his large audience and wanted to debate with him.
Bankei was in the midst of a talk when the priest appeared, but the fellow made such a disturbance that Bankei stopped his discourse and asked about the noise.
“The founder of our sect,” boasted the priest, “had such miraculous powers that he held a brush in his hand on one bank of the river, his attendant held up a paper on the other bank, and the teacher wrote the holy name of Amida through the air. Can you do such a wonderful thing?”
Bankei replied lightly: “Perhaps your fox can perform that trick, but that is not the manner of Zen. My miracle is that when I feel hungry I eat, and when I feel thirsty I drink.” Source: Zen Flesh, Zen Bones

Are you singing YOUR song or someone else’s? What does the term mean to YOU?

  2. 12/04/2016 11:19 pm

Before you leave a comment, STOP, consider this: Your comments are part of your carbon footprint on the internet. They tell the world how you think and respond to information. Do you really want the world to think that you only speak in monosyllables or that your best response to a 2300 word post is “Love the quote/pictures/video/this n that?” Do you really think “Thanks for sharing!” (which in my opinion is a cavalier way of saying F…. You) is a comment? Please Reconsider. I know YOU took time out of your busy schedule and landed here. I’m rooting for you to say something that helps others understand and respond with clarity to this post. THANK YOU! <3
