We woke up to about 6-8 inches of snow this morning. The pending snowfall was announced, on the evening news last night, with a promise that the snow will dissipate and a wonderful afternoon sun will replace the blankets of snow that looked beautiful from a window but, made the morning commute a hassle. Like all the other seasons we experience in these parts, time is a major factor in their arrival and departure, and when I saw the challenge for today, I decided to share some of the photos I took of our early morning snowfall. Time is fleeting and when I took the pictures, I noticed a dove perched on one of the branches in front of my home. Just like the snowfall,  I knew I was capturing a moment that would soon be gone.

As promised, the late afternoon sun melted most of the heavy snow we saw this morning, and so, my photograph of the bare trees, the trees and car at the traffic light, and the beautiful dappled sunlight peeking through, were reminders of the transitory nature of time… Now you see it, now you don’t! There is a settling that hovers in the air whenever it snows. In some way, I always feel like Mother Nature is paying a visit to remind us of her  vast and varied manifestations. Perhaps I’m being poetic, but there is an urgency to her snowy, showy arrival and her quiet dissipation. All of it echoing the transient nature of time.

While I’ve never been a huge fan of snow fall, mostly because the clean up and treacherous roads leave much to be desired, I enjoy photographing her arrival, her magnificent way of blanketing everything in her path in bright shades of white, and then the messy melting that takes place when she is done slowing us down… An aha moment for me was the recognition that weather like this forces us to slow down and take stock of our time. It makes us stop to look around and inhale the fresh air, to enjoy the beautiful patterns of snow on branches and to appreciate what we have  – which is TIME!
