“Food makes travel so exceptional, because you get to taste what it’s actually supposed to taste like. To eat the real Pad Thai or finally have a proper curry is something pretty amazing.” Meghan Markle

I was born into the ‘first family’ of Thai food in Los Angeles. My parents came here separately in 1966 and went on to open the first restaurants and grocery stores in this country and I was the kid doing homework in the back corner of the restaurant. Chef Jet Tila
What is Thai food? Every country in the world has its own food profile. It reflects its culture, environment, ingenuity and values. In the case of Thailand, these words come to mind: intricacy; attention to detail; texture; color; taste; and the use of ingredients with medicinal benefits, as well as good flavor. The Principles of Thai Cookery, Chef McDang

The Kingdom of Thailand, formerly known as Siam, is at the center of the Indochinese peninsula in Mainland Southeast Asia Thailand boasts a rich and varied culture with beautiful landscapes, great architecture, fantastic foods, numerous languages, and Indian, Lao, Burmese, Cambodian, and Chinese influences. While this beautiful Southeast Asian nation has had a volatile history with its share of war and change, it is also an emerging economy and the 51st largest country in the world; about 16% (?) of the country’s economy comes from Tourism. Anyone who has been to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, or any of the tourist attractions in Thailand, will tell you that there is much to do, see, eat, and enjoy in these cities and in the countryside. I’ve always loved Thai food and, for the life of me, I can’t remember my very first experience with this exquisite cuisine. What I do know is that I was thrilled to receive my Try The World – Thailand Box, and I’ll gladly join you for some great Thai food any day.

Try The World – Thailand Box Subscription Box Review: If, like me, you are a foodie who enjoys foods from around the world, I bet you have had the gastronomic pleasure of enjoying an exquisite dish or two from Thailand. Aside from being one of the most beautiful, tourist-friendly countries in the world, Thailand is also famous for its array of fresh, spicy, delicious, and complex flavors that would satisfy even the most refined palate. For this excursion through the world of fine  Try The World -Thai foods, we have the good fortune of Chef Jet Tila’s wisdom and experience. The son of the first Thai Food grocery store owners in the USA, Chef Jet learned to cook Thai cuisine from his grandmother.  He went on to study, open restaurants, and create delicious Thai dishes enjoyed by many fans around the country.

Today, Chef Jet is the First Culinary Ambassador to Thailand and he kindly agreed to curate the 8 items in our Try The World – Thailand Box. Come along on this boat ride through the floating markets of Thailand as our guest chef selects 8 items for your enjoyment.  I promise you won’t be disappointed by the selections and accompanying recipes he created to help us enjoy them. I remember seeing Chef Jet on Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations, and his enthusiasm for Thai cuisine and down-to-earth approach won me over. He has pulled together some Thai food favorites and offered us three recipes to whet your appetite.

“Our minds are like our stomachs; they are whetted by the change of their food, and variety supplies both with fresh appetite.” Quintilian

We not only pay attention to how a dish tastes: we are also concerned about how it looks, how it smells, and how it fits in with the rest of the meal. We think of all parts of the meal as a whole – sum rap Thai (the way Thais eat), is the term we use for the unique components that make up a characteristically Thai meal.” The Principles of Thai Cookery, Chef McDang

Did you know? Thai cuisine (Ar-Han-Thai) is one of the most popular cuisine in the world. In 2011, seven of Thailand’s popular dishes made it to the list of the “World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods (Readers’ Pick)”— a worldwide online poll of 35,000 people by CNN International. Thailand had more dishes on the list than any other country. They were tom yam goong (4th), pad Thai (5th), som tam (6th), massaman curry (10th), green curry (19th), Thai fried rice (24th) and moo nam tok (36th). Via Wikipedia

What is in the Thailand Box? The Thailand Box, like all the other Try The World boxes I’ve received to date, had me salivating for didn’t disappoint. My Thailand Box contained the following 8 items: 1. Tom Yum Soup mix Set by Lumlum; the spices are harvested in a small village in Northern Thailand and the soup is popular because it has medicinal properties. 2. Coconut Flower Syrup by Chiwadi; is made from the nectar that flows from freshly cut coconut blossoms and is a commonly used sweetener. The producer pays fair wages and funds projects in Western Thailand. 3. Curry Paste by Nittaya Thai Curry; this green curry paste is made from fresh herbs based on a traditional family recipe. 4. Taro Chips by Minemadame; taro is a root vegetable that tastes like potatoes but with a richer, milkier flavor. These are sweet and salty snacks. 5. Coconut Crispy Rolls by Virgin Coco; called Thong Muan (gold) in Thai, these crumbly cookies are given as a gift, with the blessings of wealth bestowed on the receiver.

6. Jasberry Rice by Jasberry; this new rice strain is a healthy grain packed with antioxidants and fiber. Jasberry partners with small Fair Trade farmers and cooperatives. 7. Dried Jackfruit by Eros; locals enjoy this fruit year round and eat it fresh or dried. Jackfruit is a key part of the local Thai diet. and 8. Thai Iced Tea by Wangderm; this classy, milky, and grassy-flavored tea is made by a long-standing company well-versed in Thai culinary culture, and it is a great way to wrap up an evening of eating delicious Thai food made right in your kitchen. Enjoy the selections and do come back for more as Try The World travels the globe to bring you the best foods and condiments. What are you waiting for? Happy Holidays All! <3

Thai food ain’t about simplicity. It’s about the juggling of disparate elements to create a harmonious finish. Like a complex musical chord it’s got to have a smooth surface but it doesn’t matter what’s happening underneath. Simplicity isn’t the dictum here, at all. Some westerners think it’s a jumble of flavors, but to a Thai that’s important, it’s the complexity they delight in. Chef David Thompson
