Weekly Photo Challenge: GATHERING

18/12/2015

“This is the power of gathering: it inspires us, delightfully, to be more hopeful, more joyful, more thoughtful: in a word, more alive.” Alice Waters

Photo Challenge: Document a gathering and share your interpretation with us. Gathering together to share what we love; music, dance, food, entertainment or even people watching is fun and a great way to stay connected. For this assignment though, the first thought that came to mind was what I observed on a trip to Wash DC. I was at the station waiting to take my train and decided to walk around and capture a few shots. I saw a man with a plastic bag of food, gingerly reaching for a few crumbs to feed a flock of pigeons that had gathered at his feet. They watched his every move and each time he threw some food to them, they scrambled to eat it and then gathered again for more.

“The table is a meeting place, a gathering ground, the source of sustenance and nourishment, festivity, safety, and satisfaction. A person cooking is a person giving: Even the simplest food is a gift.” Laurie Colwin

I thought the dance/feeding session between the man and the pigeons was a perfect example of how we gather in our various groups, clubs and cliques, and the cues we send out to each other in those groups or communities. Of course, as I sifted through my shots, I found other examples of gatherings and created a mixed collage of examples for your enjoyment. They range from a beautiful sculpture of gathered children I saw at a mall, to dancers at work, to horses and ducks, and people enjoying free Bluth’s frozen bananas, lunch at Sylvia’s in Harlem, and tea at a local tea-shop, yoga at Times Square and the man feeding pigeons. What types of shots would you have shared? What are your thoughts?

As Emerson suggests above, we do tend to gravitate towards like; people who share our interests. So, you could easily say that I was drawn to shots of gatherings that were of interest to me and what I enjoy; food, nature, dance, music, travel, life forms … Hope you enjoy the holidays in the company of those you love and share some good will. Happy Holiday Season! Stay Safe. Stay inspired. Have a Happy Weekend!

My fellow bloggers were equally creative with their selections. Check out how others interpreted the theme – Gathering – below.

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: Gathering –  This week, Share with us your interpretation of “gathering.” It could be your entire family decked out in ugly holiday sweaters. It could be a group of seagulls strutting down the beach. Perhaps it’s a basket of fresh herbs you’ve collected from your garden for that awesome pasta dish this evening.

Positive Motivation Tip: We gather for all sorts of reasons… enjoy every moment!

Gatherings can be so varied. Some are for happy times and some are for not so happy times….but gatherings are a part of us…even if all you do is go to work and nowhere else

These are some lovely photos. I’m drawn to the photo of the man feeding the pigeons. Maybe it’s just the solitude and calm portrayed 🙂

Your theme is very apt because it is a season when more gatherings happen. Gatherings keep us feel that we belong to a group.

I like the pigeons being fed scenario and how that parallels people in some regard.
