While we don’t normally do anything on Columbus Day other than corn mazes and other fall stuff, I am thankful for him.
I am not a great history buff what I know is Columbus Day is symbolic (new) of changes time to reflect and renew .
The kids are excited to be out of school for Columbus Day. I’ve learned a LOT of new things blogging. I visit blogs daily to try to learn all I can.

I like learning the history behind our holidays. It was our Thanksgiving today.
Yep, I do not get the glorification of Columbus for our country. He didn’t get here. He was a tyrant and an evil man, and he should not be celebrated in any way.
Love the photos. and motivation for finding a new work here. I wish i could have a great opportunity.
Blogging has earned me new friends. It gave me confidence to believe in myself and that I can accomplish things I only wished for years ago. This alone is a singular sensation for me.

I never realize that there was a Columbus Day, now I wanna celebrate Columbus Day.

Europeans roamed across the globe with magnificent self-glorious arrogance destroying a thousand subtle and a ancient cultures as they went, and all the time celebrating the fact that we were “Civilising” new worlds. We can see the benefits of those adventures in so much of the world’s current turmoil

No, I do not and will not celebrate Columbus Day. 🙁 I used to travel to the States from Jamaica for the shopping as the sales were great but that ‘s as far as I would go. While I admire the man’s tenacity and determination to see the world, the price of his adventure was kinda great for many. That’s my view.
You are not alone… as we all get better educated.
I do think it’s so important to learn about the holidays we celebrate. My kids were pretty unsure as to why we “celebrate” Christopher Columbus so it was a good way to talk about some US history and who Columbus was and what he did…the good, the bad, and the ugly.

It’s a strange thing to do isn’t it? sailing off across the seas, finding land and deciding its yours. It always makes me think on the 1895? punitive raids in Nigeria.

Fun post. I love your first Haiku. Personally though I acknowledge that Christopher Columbus like us all was imperfect. However in reading his journal and letter to his sovereign I have to say that I believe he was led by God across the ocean, and was a good man. It is not right to hold someone accountable for the actions of those who came after him.
Throughout school we were all encouraged to celebrate Columbus Day and Christopher as a person. I’d be happy to celebrate discovery but not the man and his deeds.

It’s sad that I never knew about the atrocities perpetrated on my ancestors (Native Americans) when Columbus and his crew arrived, until I was much older.

I have learned a lot from other bloggers. I do admit that I don’t know a while behind most holidays. I’d like to though.
I am thankful for Columbus day. Our country would have been discovered at some point but I think Columbus had the founding father’s and God’s plan in mind when he discovered America.
Christy, he didn’t discover America… You can’t discover what already exists with people and a vibrant culture.

I’m a big History buff! I hate that books always get it wrong because Columbus was not just the only one who found his way to this continent. Plus, I still think it is wrong what all the settlers did to the natives.

I have done a lot of independent reading about Christopher Columbus, and I cannot appreciate the efforts of some towns enough for taking the opportunity to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. I would love to see it changed all across the country, but know it probably won’t be. We sure do like to be complicit in our ignorance as a society, don’t we?

We’ve been studying early explorers, including Columbus this semester with my children. Although I learned it differently as a child, I always remind them that Columbus didn’t discover America so that this myth isn’t continued with my own children.
I refuse to acknowledge the tyranny. I will instead teach my children about the indigenous cultures that were here long before he “discovered” it.

By bringing Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we’re bringing awareness that we’re not going to allow someone like that to be glorified into a hero, because of the hurt that he caused to Indigenous people of America

I am not an American but I have read about America and the history behind it just the way there are lots of history hidden behind my country India. There are a lot many which remains unknown and which people ignore. Very nice you have brought out that perspective and the awareness.

I didn’t know about Columbus day as an actual US holiday until a few years ago and all I could ask myself is, why? From what I understand he ‘discovered’ many islands in the Carribean, Central and South America but never actually made landfall in North America.
When I was younger I was big on Christopher Columbus and his day but as I know more and am a lot older …. I can definitely say if it wasn’t him it could have been someone else (whether that person would have been better or worse … who knows) … but I don’t think he should be praised as much as he is either. =0/
A lot of people feel that way now… The jury is still out. 🙂

I will keep saying it… Columbus did NOT discover America! The history books might tell you that, but it is not true.
Criticizing Columbus is useless, it is a piece of history and whether it is positive or negative, it must be accepted. So what to say thank you for your article then!
There is so much controversy surrounding Columbus. The one thing I know for sure is that his discovery of the Americas did not bode well for Native Americans.
Love learning little tidbits like this. If nothing else Columbus was brave to search for new worlds.
We don’t even have Columbus Day off school here in Texas. Although we did when I lived in Florida. I’m not sure why.

I’m not familiar with Columbus Day, although during that era we have a similar group of voyager that arrived in the Philippines, headed by Ferdinand Magellan – a Portuguese voyager leading the Spanish group of colonizers.
I grew up in an age in which we did celebrate Columbus Day. Even then I wondered why are we celebrating this. It just never really made sense to me.
I’ve heard about Columbus Day but never really knew anything about it. Turns out is a national holiday in many countries of the Americas and elsewhere, and a federal holiday in the United States, which officially celebrates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas.

I hate the idea of celebrating Thanksgiving/Columbus Day… Instead, I celebrate the day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day (here in Canada).

Our school gives the day off but they call it something else. Things they are a-changing!
I don’t celebrate Columbus Day since I moved to Japan about ten years ago. I don’t really celebrate it for Columbus because he didn’t really discover America. But, I think it is time to remember who really discover and helped nutured America.
