Motivation Mondays: Positive Thinking

14/09/2015

“Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.” John Homer Mille

DR. ERIC THOMAS | You Owe Yourself Happiness – YOU OWE YOU

Seek out that particular mental attribute which makes you feel most deeply and vitally alive, along with which comes the inner voice which says, “This is the real me,” and when you have found that attitude, follow it. William James
In any dark time, there is a tendency to veer toward fainting over how much is wrong or unmended in the world. Do not focus on that. Do not make yourself ill with overwhelm. There is a tendency to fall into being weakened by perseverating on what is outside your reach, by what cannot yet be. Do not focus there. That is spending the wind without raising the sails. Clarissa Pinkola Estés
I truly believe that everything that we do and everyone that we meet is put in our path for a purpose. There are no accidents; we’re all teachers – if we’re willing to pay attention to the lessons we learn, trust our positive instincts and not be afraid to take risks or wait for some miracle to come knocking at our door. Marla Gibbs
Our attitudes control our lives. Attitudes are a secret power working twenty-four hours a day, for good or bad. It is of paramount importance that we know how to harness and control this great force. Tom Blandi
Your own mind is a sacred enclosure into which nothing harmful can enter except by your permission. Ralph Waldo Emerson
Every thought is a seed. If you plant crab apples, don’t count on harvesting Golden Delicious. Bill Meyer
Happiness is an attitude. We either make ourselves miserable, or happy and strong. The amount of work is the same. Francesca Reigler

What does Positive Thinking mean to you? Yesterday was Positive Thinking Day so, this is the perfect topic to help us start our week with vim and vigor. When some folks hear the term “positive thinking,” they might remember the bestselling book by Norman Vincent Peale: The Power Of Positive Thinking, they might think of all the motivational speakers they have encountered in their lives, or they might think of Pollyanna and all those feel good folk who spend their time daydreaming instead of living… If this is you, then I suggest you come to terms with the fact that positive thinking isn’t about ignoring our responsibilities, pretending that our struggles no longer exist, never having a bad hair day or running off to some undefined Nirvana; it’s about taking charge of our thoughts, our beliefs, and our lives, and doing the necessary work that is required to get us from point A to point B. It’s about how we choose to respond to situations that we experience in our daily lives. So reconsider your perspective and understand that when we adopt a positive stance, we are adopting a CAN Do not a CAN’T Do spirit. Our thoughts determine our actions, and when we make an effort to act on the belief that our actions will bear fruit, the results, both good and bad, will give us a lot of insights to help us learn and grow. Dr Eric’s video above, and the two stories below are insightful because they tell somewhat different stories but, both offer a positive mental attitude theme. We can choose to be miserable over our life conditions or choose to act, grow beyond them, and make happiness a life choice. We owe it to ourselves.

A Story: The Wise Woman’s Stone
A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But a few days later he came back to return the stone to the wise woman.
“I’ve been thinking,” he said, “I know how valuable the stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me something more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone. Author Unknown via Yuni.com

A Story: Pollyanna – The Glad Girl
Even though many of us grew up thinking of Pollyanna in a pejorative way, the actual story of Pollyanna is an account of the power of the human spirit in overcoming tragedies. Pollyanna was an orphan who, after her mother died, moved to Vermont to live with her Aunt Polly. Aunty Polly was a wealthy, miserable lady and she was not keen on welcoming Pollyanna in. The young girl was a happy, sunny child who learned how to see the good in situations from her dad. As a little girl, she learned how to develop an optimistic attitude from what her Dad called “The Glad Game.” One Christmas, she had hoped for a doll but instead received crutches. Her dad advised Pollyanna that instead of getting upset, she should be grateful that she didn’t need the crutches.
When she moved to Vermont, she found herself in a community of hapless people and, over some time, she taught them The Glad Game and even Aunt Polly warmed up to her. Pollyanna’s life test came when she fell off the top floor of her aunt’s home and lost the use of her legs. She fell into a deep depression and couldn’t cheer herself up. But, one day, something magical happened. All the people she had helped in the community came to cheer her up and, soon, she was back to her old happy self. The real lesson of Pollyanna’s story is that once she got her groove back, she became determined to learn to walk again. Her positive attitude helped her overcome a tragic situation. That is what can happen to any of us. Bad things happen to good people but, our attitude can make a huge difference.

“The person who sends out positive thoughts activates the world around him positively and draws back to himself positive results.” Norman Vincent Peale

How does Positive Thinking unfold in your life? Sometimes people think that because some of us choose the path of positive thinking, our lives must be “perfect.” I don’t know what your definition of perfect is but, I can speak for myself and say that I’ve had an adventurous life that has had its share of success, failure, challenges, disappointments and unspeakable joy. I wake up every morning with a grateful heart for the breath I take, food and shelter, and the ability to extend a hand to others. When we stop obsessing over our endless needs and wants, and express gratitude for what is, we are able to buckle down, focus on our SMART goals and help others achieve theirs too. My closest family and friends know that my life is a miracle, even with its current challenges, and I celebrate that fact by writing posts that would lift others and myself up. If 1-1000 people find a nugget of hope and wisdom in my posts, and it helps them move forward with their week, then my efforts have created a positive boomerang that invariably bounces back to me. We must remember that in every disappointment is a profound gift and blessing that can be used to help so many. The story below, about Flopsy, should give you more food for thought on the subject.

A Story: There’s More To Life Than Gathering Nuts – by Suzanne Willis Zoglio via Yuni.com
Flopsy was a high-achieving squirrel. He left the family nest when it was time, survived a few run-ins with retrievers, and dodged more than one Hawk in his day. He also learned to gather his food supply first thing in the day . . . before any play . . . and build a good stash in case the oncoming winter were to turn severe.
He found a mate – her name was Nuggets – and they raised three agile squirrels. One by one the youngsters left the nest, heading out across the wires to another part of town. When they were gone, Flopsy couldn’t help wondering, “Did I teach them all that they needed to know . . . did I give them the confidence they’ll need to survive? Did I spend enough time chasing them in spirals around the tree or just sitting side by side peacefully on the bank of the stream?” “Oh well,” he thought, “I did the best I could . . . and they seem like good squirrels.”
“So, on with life,” he thought. He got up early every morning and scampered across a few backyards to gather nuts . . . as he had done for so many years before. But soon he noticed that he wasn’t getting up with the same enthusiasm as he once had. Also, while he was foraging, his mind would wander. Sometimes he wondered if his nut gathering really mattered. After all, he and Nuggets had a reasonable stash of food . . . more, he thought, than two hungry squirrels could go through in a lifetime. “Maybe I should just . . . whoa . . . wait a minute . . . whoops . . . yikkkkkkkkkes.” With all his daydreaming, Flopsy lost his footing and went crashing down through the branches of a 100-year-old Copper Beech. At 5 feet above the ground, he almost caught his grip, but alas, it wasn’t to be. Flopsy crashed into the ground at a breakneck speed . . . except he didn’t break his neck! But he did black out for a moment. When he came to, he was on his back looking up at the canopy of penny-colored leaves dancing in the wind.
As he watched the swaying leaves, he remembered how he used to swing from branch to branch almost effortlessly. He loved to hang from one paw, flip over to the other side, and even hang by his tail. That’s how he got his name. He’d jump from one branch to another, flip his body over as if on a parallel bar . . . a regular Flying Wallenda of the squirrel world.
Just thinking about it made his pulse race. His little toes began to tap. It had been years since he’d done what he loved to do. After all, he’d been busy doing what he was supposed to do . . . gathering nuts, providing shelter . . . becoming part of the Treetop community. But now, he thought, “Why not? What am I waiting for?”
He lingered under the tree a little longer, and thought about what he and Nuggets really needed to survive. He figured out that if he gathered nuts early each day, he’d have time to “fly” in the afternoon . . . and still be home in time for dinner. He really didn’t need to spend 24/7 in the “hunt.”
Soon Flopsy was back practicing his high-branch act. He wasn’t as limber as he once had been, but he found his years of experience had taught him how to focus and soon he was flying even better than before.
But after several high-flying months, Flopsy sensed that something was still missing from his life. He definitely enjoyed what he was doing, but he still wasn’t sure if he was making a difference . . . for anyone but himself . . . and Nuggets, of course, whom he loved dearly. CONTINUED BELOW!

Motivation Mondays: Positive Thinking - What we believe, we become...

Motivation Mondays: Positive Thinking – What we believe, we become…

A lot of things are inherent in life -change, birth, death, aging, illness, accidents, calamities, and losses of all kinds- but these events don’t have to be the cause of ongoing suffering. Yes, these events cause grief and sadness, but grief and sadness pass, like everything else, and are replaced with other experiences. The ego, however, clings to negative thoughts and feelings and, as a result, magnifies, intensifies, and sustains those emotions while the ego overlooks the subtle feelings of joy, gratitude, excitement, adventure, love, and peace that come from Essence. If we dwelt on these positive states as much as we generally dwell on our negative thoughts and painful emotions, our lives would be transformed. Gina Lake, author of What about Now?: Reminders for Being in the Moment
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things. Robert Brault
Our attitudes control our lives. Attitudes are a secret power working twenty-four hours a day, for good or bad. It is of paramount importance that we know how to harness and control this great force. Tom Blandi
We plant seeds that will flower as results in our lives, so best to remove the weeds of anger, avarice, envy and doubt… Dorothy Day
The sun shines and warms and lights us and we have no curiosity to know why this is so; but we ask the reason of all evil, of pain, and hunger, and mosquitoes and silly people. Ralph Waldo Emerson
True compassion does not come from wanting to help out those less fortunate than ourselves, but from realizing our kinship with all beings. Pema Chodron

To those who think real life is only about pain, suffering and negativity, I beg to differ. Real life is about sadness and joys, successes and failures, and the CHOICE to choose where we want to rest our heads — on a bed of negative thoughts or a bed of positive outlooks. Choose wisely! Life is filled with blessings and burdens, and the difference between those who thrive and those who don’t speaks volumes about our attitude; having a positive mental attitude is critical to how we respond to events in our lives. What we believe, we become. What we resist, persists.  Maintain a positive outlook on life, learn to give back to others, and be grateful for the blessings and lessons.

A Story: There’s More To Life Than Gathering Nuts – by Suzanne Willis Zoglio via Yuni.com CONTD!
So he went back to the tree where he’d had his “Aha” moment. Yup . . . just propped himself up against the trunk of the tree, folded his little forelegs behind his head, and stared up under the penny-colored canopy of leaves. “How can I do what I love and also make a difference in some way?” (He was a pretty philosophical squirrel.) He asked the question and watched the shimmering leaves, but no answer was forthcoming. Disappointed . . . and more than a little frustrated, he scrambled to his feet and headed home to Nuggets. The next morning, while Flopsy was out gathering nuts, he noticed an adolescent squirrel on a low branch of a tree staring up. Just staring . . . not moving. So he scurried up next to the youngster and asked, “What’s up?” The younger squirrel replied, “I’m trying to figure out how to get to that cluster of mulberries at the end of that branch at the top of the tree. They look so delicious, but . . . I’m rather clumsy and I’m just not sure I can manage the climb.”

“Well, would you like a suggestion?” Flopsy offered. “Sure,” said the teenage squirrel . . . curious if this graying elder could REALLY teach him what he needed to know. So Flopsy proceeded to suggest a path that might be right for the young squirrel to take . . . given his capabilities and his destination. He even taught him a special way of using his claws so he wouldn’t slip. Soon the young squirrel was nibbling on mulberries from the end of a branch and Flopsy went off to gather nuts.
And then it hit him . . . right out of the blue. “That’s IT!” he blurted out. “That’s how I can do what I love and make a difference.” Soon Flopsy was running a school for high-flying squirrels. The days were long and the students were not always attentive, but the time just seemed to fly. One day, he turned to his mate and said, “You know, life doesn’t get any better than this . . . I couldn’t be more satisfied.” “Nor could I,” she said, “nor could I.”
3 Things We Can Learn From Flopsy About Moving Beyond Success
1. A whack on the head often helps our vision . . . we see what’s really important. Don’t wait for a ” wake-up call;” put your time where your priorities lie.
2. To feel fully alive, we need to feed our passions, desires, and dreams. Every day – in ways large and small – observe, enjoy, and create. Life is in the details.
3. When it seems like something’s missing, try giving. Share your talent to make a difference . . . build a legacy. The connection makes us whole. By Suzanne Willis Zoglio, Ph.D.
Positive Motivation Tip: What we believe we become. What we resist, persists… Keep a positive outlook on life, give back,  and be grateful for the blessings and lessons

When we channel our thoughts and feelings towards positivity, we will tend to see the good things in our lives and appreciate all the blessings we have, instead of focusing on the negativity.
