Motivation Mondays: TIME

Know the true value of time; snatch, seize, and enjoy every moment of it. No idleness, no laziness, no procrastination: never put off till tomorrow what you can do today. Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield
Lost – yesterday, somewhere between sunrise and sunset, two golden hours, each set with sixty diamond minutes. No reward is offered, for they are gone forever. Horace Mann

What does TIME mean to you?  In some cultures, being prompt is not the focus but being PRESENT when you show up is… We’ve entered the 8th month of the year; are you where you imagined yourself to be? Time is an equal opportunity teacher, it waits for no man and, whether we like it or not, it marches on, taking us along with it.   All of us have heard the exhortation to use/manage our time well and to spend it on the things that truly matter. But, do we?  Once lost, it can’t be regained so, time is truly one of our greatest motivators. Every day, we are reminded, in small ways and large, that Tempus Fujit and we must make hay while the sun shines and spend our time well; ideally, in the company of those who wish the best for us. When we spend time with people who negate us and condemn our efforts, they are stealing our precious time and throwing it in the garbage. Is that what we wish for ourselves? Why do we stay there? Contemplate this.
The great philosopher, Theophrastus, once said that “Time is the most valuable thing a man can spend.” I won’t argue with that, would you? How and with whom do you spend your time? If we make a concerted effort to see each moment of time as an invaluable gift that demands our attention NOW, how well will we use it? Take stock and contemplate how much time is frittered away on things that don’t serve us or that undermine us. Are you spending your time gossiping, condemning and procrastinating?  Are you surrounded by toxic, envious people? Why do you stay? When will you start focusing on your heart’s dream? On your cherished goals? Did you know that time spent in toxicity is draining and enervating?  Whenever we expend energy in a negative or positive way, more of same is returned to us and that energy can uplift us or scatter us. Human time on earth is finite; we must use it judiciously because I believe that most of us want to leave this earth with a spirit of contentment. Where do you spend your time? Time is more precious than pearls and other trinkets… Why throw it away by keeping company with swine? No matter how hard we try, we can’t escape the call of time and so, with each breath we take, with every action we perform, we must remember that the horseman from Samarra is always around the corner.
A Story: The Appointment in Samarra by W. Somerset Maugham
Death Speaks:
There was a merchant in Baghdad who sent his servant to market to buy provisions and, in a little while, the servant came back, white and trembling, and said: “Master, just now when I was in the marketplace, I was jostled by a woman in the crowd and when I turned, I saw it was Death that jostled me. She looked at me and made a threatening gesture. Now, lend me your horse, and I will ride away from this city and avoid my fate. I will go to Samarra and there, Death will not find me.”
The merchant lent him his horse, and the servant mounted it, and he dug his spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse could gallop, he went. Then the merchant went down to the marketplace and he saw me standing in the crowd, and he came to me and said: “Why did you make a threatening gesture to my servant when you saw him this morning?”
“That was not a threatening gesture,” I said, “it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Baghdad, for I had an appointment with him tonight in Samarra.” Tempus Fujit! Via Good Web & Wikipedia

How did it get so late so soon? Its night before its afternoon. December is here before its June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon? Dr. Seuss
All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages.William Shakespeare

What do you cherish most? We all know that money can’t buy us time and yet, we labor on, dreaming and earning, sharing or conniving to achieve XYZ. All of us are motivated by our responsibilities, our desires, and our goals, and we work at them daily.  While there is nothing wrong with that at all, we must be attentive to how much of our time is spent in the pursuit of “things.” Things have their place in our lives but, they can’t replace good conversations with family and friends, a hug, a kiss or a sincere smile shared with loved ones.  If we forfeit time spent with our family, we will come to the end of life wondering where it all went and wondering if we used our time well.
For what is all this work worth? When was the last time you called a close friend to shoot the breeze and enjoy a good laugh? When was the last time you sat down and did nothing? We need rest and relaxation time as well as time for work, and we must force ourselves to take that R & R time: Instead of making excuses, we must motivate ourselves to create some semblance of balance in our lives. Is it easy? Of course not, but, we must make the time! Remember that human time is finite and, every moment we spend doing things that don’t satisfy our spirit, becomes a moment of time wasted.

The Importance of Time (a touching short story by Bob Perks: )
A young man learns what’s most important in life from the guy next door. It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man. College, girls, career, and life itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit of his dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future and nothing could stop him.
Over the phone his mother told him, “Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday.”
Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.
“Jack, did you hear me?”
“Oh sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It’s been so long since I thought of him. I’m sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,” Jack said.
“Well, he didn’t forget you. Every time I saw him he’d ask how you were doing. He’d reminisce about the many days you spent over ‘his side of the fence’ as he put it,” Mom told him.
“I loved that old house he lived in.” Jack said.
“You know, Jack, after your Father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man’s influence in your life,” she said.
“He’s the one who taught me carpentry,” he said, “I wouldn’t be in this business if it wasn’t for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important. Mom, I’ll be there for the funeral,” Jack said.
As busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser’s funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own and most of his relatives had passed away.
The night before he had to return home Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time.
Standing in the doorway Jack paused for a moment. It was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap through space and time. The house was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture … Jack stopped suddenly.(Contd below)

We must use time wisely and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right. Nelson Mandela
Time is a sort of river of passing events, and strong is its current; no sooner is a thing brought to sight than it is swept by and another takes its place, and this too will be swept away. Marcus Aurelius

How do YOU spend your personal time? If we didn’t have commitments to family, jobs, blogs, and heaven knows what, what would we do with our time? I belong to a number of online communities and while some of them are uplifting/supportive/satisfying, some are not. I am attentive to the time I spend in them and know where appreciation reigns and where it is reined in. We must be fiercely protective of our time and make every effort to spend it with those who encourage and energize us. Doing anything less is destructive and a waste of time.  Some might think it’s just another cheery saying when they hear the phrase: Spend your time with people who support and encourage you to be the best. But it holds great wisdom. We become the company we keep!
Why is where we spend our time important?  It is very important because good company elevates us and negative company enervates us.  When you are in good company, you feel inspired to strive, to be better, and to wish same on those around you. The positive energy is palpable and you feel good when you visit. When the reverse is the case, you feel a tightening in your stomach when you visit and the spirit feels violated. Pay attention, be attentive to those inner promptings and minimize  your time in that space. Your success lies elsewhere and there is no need to fight at changing those who don’t wish the best for you … Move on!  Time, as we see from the Servant in Samarra and Bob Perk’s story is of essence and if we trivialize its importance, we will live to regret it. Be careful where you spend your time! How are you planning to manage/use your time?  I’d love to know… The story continues below.
The Importance of Time (a touching short story by Bob Perks: ) Contd
“What’s wrong, Jack?” his Mom asked.
“The box is gone,” he said.
“What box?” Mom asked.
“There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he’d ever tell me was, ‘The thing I value most’,” Jack said.
It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it.
“Now I’ll never know what was so valuable to him,” Jack said, “I better get some sleep. I have an early flight home, Mom.”
It had been about two weeks since Mr. Belser died. Returning home from work one day Jack discovered a note in his mailbox. “Signature required on a package. No one at home. Please stop by the main post office within the next three days,” the note read.
Early the next day Jack retrieved the package. The package was old and looked like it had been mailed a hundred years ago. The handwriting was difficult to read, but the return address caught his attention.
“Mr. Harold Belser” it read.
Jack took the package out to his car and ripped it open. There inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack’s hands shook as he read the note inside.
“Upon my death please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bennett. It’s the thing I value most in my life”. A small key was taped to the letter. His heart raced as tears filled his eyes. Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch.
Running his fingers slowly over the finely etched casing, he unlatched the cover. Inside he found these words engraved:
“Jack, Thanks for your time! – Harold Belser.”
“The thing he valued most…was…my time.”
Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his office and cleared his appointments for the next two days. “Why?” Janet, his assistant, asked. “I need some time to spend with my son,” he said. “Oh, by the way, Janet, thanks for your time”. © Bob Perks

I cherish my family more than anything else in life. I definitely don’t put money near the top of my list. However, I have to admit I spend a great deal of my time working for the money — it makes life easier.

Money can be an abundant blessing and nothing wrong with earning it… We just need to balance our time and not let it dominate everything else.

I have a system that works for me now; I plan my posts ahead of time and spend time thinking and meditating on the topics. Some are easier than others to write but, they all come together in ways that I often never expect… I feel blessed to explore a new topic each week and I thank God for the grace that comes with it… Thank you for asking.

People don’t say “Thanks for your time” enough. We should – to show how much we value people’s time. It’s just sad that there are so many things that are out of our control – getting documents from the government, for example, takes so much time. Sometimes it’s so frustrating.

The Importance Of Time was a touching story. Indeed time is very precious since it can be given away, but cannot be taken back. It is a most favored currency of love.

Time passes so quickly and we tend to neglect things that are important to us.

That is why if I can work at home to stay with my family, I will. If it is already payday, I always treat them. If they want something, I do my best to give it to them. (Take note: I’m still single. hihi)

Time is the greatest enemy of the living. You will never know when your time will come. So live as if it is your last.

“Time is one of the greatest motivators”, well, I have to refute it. Time functions as a determiner of one’s life, action, and activity. It tells when and the extent of one’s life existence.
