“After doing a juice cleanse, I’m motivated to eat healthier and not emotionally. Cleansing is like my meditation. It makes me stop, focus and think about what I’m putting into my body. I’m making a commitment to my health and hitting the reset button.” Salma Hayek

Hello August! Have you tried Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)? Recently, I decided to try a simple Apple Cider Vinegar detox and was pleasantly surprised by the results. Not only did it aid in my digestion, it helped curb some of my sugar cravings and gave me an overall feeling of well-being. As with anything we do, moderation is key and don’t forget to consult your medical professional. Apple Cider Vinegar is made from apples that undergo a double fermentation process; the first process/ferment produces beneficial enzymes, antioxidants, and hard alcoholic cider. The second ferment yields the much admired and used Apple Cider Vinegar.

While we can choose to consume any form of Apple Cider Vinegar, it is recommended that we use Organic ACV that is high-quality, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar and contains mother of vinegar. Mother of Vinegar is the cobweb like, cloudy amber color we see in bottles that contain it, and most brands will also identify it on their labels. In my recipe for the delicious Best Apple Cider & Fruit Smoothie, (see recipe below), I used the recommended type which added a lovely, slight tart bite to the drink, while maintaining all the other combined flavors from the other ingredients I added to the mix. Enjoy!

“Whether you’re reaching for one of your favorite cookbooks or just winging it, do your best to keep a well-stocked arsenal of healthy ingredients at your disposal. At the very least, you’ll always be ready to whip up a green juice or smoothie.” Kris Carr

Food Files: Best Apple Cider & Fruit Smoothie – Sample of unpasteurized, amber colored,  mother of Apple Cider Vinegar

Best Apple Cider & Fruit Smoothie

1/2 mango, peeled and cubed

1/2 large banana, sliced into chunks

1/2 pear, halved and cubed

1/2 plum, halved and cubed

1 large orange, peeled and segmented

1/2 avocado, scooped into chunks

2/3 cup of peaches, peeled and cubed

2/3 cup of frozen pineapples

1/2 cup of papaya

1/2 cup of strawberries

1/3 cup organic Greek yogurt – plain

1 tablespoon Organic,  unpasteurized apple cider vinegar w/mother of vinegar

1/2 cup ice

Instructions: Prepare all the items and place them in small cups/bowls. Add all the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth. If you like a thicker smoothie, you may add a bit more yoghurt and banana. Not only is this a delicious summer time smoothie, it has ACV beneficial nutrients that would help energize you and your day.

Are you aware of the many benefits of using Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)? While the jury is out on some of the purported benefits of ACV, there’s been some very thorough medical research that has pointed out  a number of benefits of using it while cautioning us to be wise about all the claims we read. A simple Google search of the term brings up a slew of articles on ACV for/against it, and many explain why so many people enjoy using it today. Aside from the myriad ways we can use it in our home, there are a number of key ways Apple Cider Vinegar can give your health a boost:  The Acetic acid in ACV can have a positive biological impact on our bodies.  ACV can improve our blood sugar levels: If we drink a glass of diluted apple cider vinegar (dilute 2 Tablespoons with  16-20 oz of water) before eating a high carb meal, it helps improve insulin sensitivity and slows the rate of rising blood sugar levels.

Apple Cider Vinegar aids digestion by encouraging the growth of healthy  bacteria in our stomach. The fermented Mother of Vinegar has properties that support digestion.  ACV balances our pH levels by balancing our alkalinity while reducing our acidity levels. This helps boost our metabolic rate, our immunity levels and even our skin. ACV protects our heart health: It prevents the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), which is a contributing factor to atherosclerosis; this is where plaque build ups in our arteries can block the flow of blood and, potentially, lead to a heart attack. Eating healthy foods is imperative for our health and it’s never too late to start.

“If you can’t afford organic food and are unable to grow your own, it’s crucial to wash all inorganic produce very carefully to minimize the toxins you consume. Soak everything for 20 minutes in water with vinegar and salt or water with fresh lemon juice and salt.” Suzanne Somers

Do you use Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) in your home? Do you know ACV offers these benefits? As mentioned earlier in this post, ACV is known to benefit us in many ways and can offer a health boost for our bodies. Here are a few more: ACV may help you lose weight: When we replace high fat, high sugar condiments  with ACV infused substitutes, we cut our intake of those unhealthy foods by more than half. ACV kills bacteria: Fermented Vinegar has antibacterial properties that can help fight minor infections in our body. The acidity levels of ACV decreases the pH of tissue, and stops bacteria from growing.  ACV may help reduce the risk of cancer because it’s a rich source of polyphenols, which are compounds synthesized by plants that help our bodies fight the negative impacts of stress, some research has shown its benefits in reducing our risk of cancers. The way I see it, apple cider vinegar can be beneficial but it is not the only answer.  If we all make an extra effort to exercise, rest our bodies/minds, and eat fresh foods, fruits and vegetables, ideally organic, we would be on the road to optimum health.  So make that smoothie, kick back and enjoy it. Do you make smoothies? What type of things do you add to yours? Let me know what you think.

I’m not so good with apple cider – I dont like how it smells. For the longest time though, my mom mixes it with some of the stuff at home, says that it’s good for the health. I should prolly give it a try again especially if it’s good especially when you’re doing detox.

    • 03/08/2015 5:23 pm

It is and you should get the raw, unpasteurized ACV with the amber color… it has a sweeter smell and well well on the system.
