Weekly Photo Challenge: HALF & HALF

Weekly Photo Challenge: HALF & HALF – Food for thought

Today I begin to understand what love must be, if it exists… When we are parted, we each feel the lack of the other half of ourselves. We are incomplete like a book in two volumes of which the first has been lost. That is what I imagine love to be: incompleteness in absence. Edmond de Goncourt

What do you think is in that cup of delicious dessert? What type of fruit is it? Did it taste good? What’s in the background? When I read the assignment for today, what struck me was how things that create juxtapositions often tell a striking contrasting story that we might not always think about until we see the contrast. What we see in a photo tells only half the story… ( when I say half, I don’t exactly mean 50% of the story… you know what I mean). Now, if I wanted to embellish the shots, I’ll add more details and even insert a tidbit about how I took these photos at a Blogger Conference (Blogher15) in NYC; right before and after Gwyneth Paltrow shared some interesting stories about her new business, her blog and her life… More on that later.

Weekly Photo Challenge: HALF & HALF – FOOD IS GOOD

Don’t do anything by half. If you love someone, love them with all your soul. When you go to work, work your ass off. When you hate someone, hate them until it hurts. Henry Rollins- Hmmm Interesting thought

What comes to mind when you look at this photo? Do you find Rollins quote jarring or endearing? Hmmm I know the basic gist of each shot, above and below, might be apparent but, as we all know, what we see in a photo tells just part of the story. The cake above was for the multicultural party on Thursday night at at BlogHer15. It was an opportunity to gather together and celebrate ALL of our diverse interests/beliefs/orientations. The food was great and the cake was divine. Yes, it wasn’t just for display.  I love the concept of half and half because beneath the bright smiles and cheery colors we often see in family photos or other shots, there is so much more to learn/know about each family member; perhaps there is even another story brewing.

MORE BELOW!

Weekly Photo Challenge: HALF & HALF - LIGHT IS GOOD

Weekly Photo Challenge: HALF & HALF – LIGHT IS GOOD

I was about half in love with her by the time we sat down. That’s the thing about girls. Every time they do something pretty… you fall half in love with them, and then you never know where the hell you are. J. D. Salinger

I love the contrast in the chandelier lights… Bright sparkles against solid dull/dark background… Something to be said for the way light attracts us and brightens spaces… half light and half dark. We need both to appreciate the deeper message. My fellow bloggers were equally creative with their selections. Check out how others interpreted the theme below.

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: Weekly Photo Challenge: HALF & HALF  For This week, share an image that has two clear halves, literally or figuratively. You could focus on composition, like me, and take a photo with an explicit dividing line (either vertical, horizontal, or diagonal). Or take the theme in other directions: zoom in on a pair of objects that together form a whole. Show two people whose demeanor or personality complement each other. Or bring into balance two opposing visual elements — light and dark, color and its absence, sharp focus juxtaposed with blurriness.

Positive Motivation Tip:  What we see in any photo tells only part of or half the story… explore!

I generally try to see or at least try to understand both sides of most anything. It doesn’t necessarily mean I am going to change my mind–but there is a whole lot more then what is first apparent in any situation.

I am definitely wondering what is in the dessert. And would love to know more details about Gwyneth Paltrow’s blog. I didn’t know she was a blogger.

    • 22/07/2015 7:29 am

The dessert is vanilla custard with apricot preserves; simple and sweet. Gwyneth started an online Lifestyle company named Goop that provides healthy, fun, user-friendly curated items from trusted sources. You should check it out.

I think if you are not having fun you are not winning regardless of what the rulebook says. Life, among other things, should be a celebration of consciousness, and if it isn’t you are using your brain and abilities to alienate yourself from what is important. That is my opinion

I guess there exists a duality in everyone. I do not think it is always 50-50 though. A person is not exactly 50% good, 50% bad.

    • 19/07/2015 12:04 pm

You are right. Duality is everywhere. The photo assignment wanted us to show it. The %s are debatable and don’t have to be exactly half. It doesn’t matter what the half is…

I love the quote Don’t do anything by half. If you love someone, love them with all your soul. When you go to work, work your ass off. When you hate someone, hate them until it hurts. I just don’t agree with the last sentence, though. I can hate someone if that person did something bad to me, but I don’t think I would do it until it hurts.

So, the concept of half and half means something deep to me. My Dad is black and my Mom is Italian, so I’ve been having to answer questions and curiosities about my identity for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a time where there were fewer people that looked similar to me and I received a different kind of discrimination as a youngster. Things have certainly changed since I was in elementary school, but the debate of racial identity and being “half & half” still lives on. It’s still a very touchy subject. My initial answer is still the same to people who boldly ask ‘what are you?’ I say my Dad is black, my Mom is Italian, and I am black. Usually, that is enough for people…and other times…it is not and I am pressed to answer more questions that is really nobody’s business. I would have thought this would have changed in 2015 with all of the increasing diversity in the U.S., but not so.

    • 19/07/2015 11:44 am

I get you Yona. My kids are half Jewish and when they say they are Bi-racial, some people object to it. Frankly, we are who we feel we are inside of ourselves, and each person comes to the conversation from different points of views – ALL are valid. I’m with you in saying that it is nobody’s business how you choose to identify yourself and I just wish we can accept each others’ definitions without arguments… Love your feedback. Thank you! 🙂

I never really got the half and half thing until I read “half dark and half light”. LOL. I guess I am not as deep as you are. If it were me I would have taken it literally. LOL. Nice shots by the way. 🙂

Half and Half hmm… interesting. When ever someone tell me something i will filter and think why is she telling me this? is it true or not. Usually half is true the other half i will investigate first. Many things we encounter in our daily life we do the same too, I have learn too many lessons do not take 100%
