To make women more aware of the danger of heart disease, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is sponsoring a national program called The Heart Truth®, in partnership with many national and community organizations. NHLBI/The Heart Truth®

DAY 1: RENEW YOUR/MAKE A COMMITMENT TO HEART HEALTH
What steps should you take for good health? NHLBI/The Heart Truth® encourages us to start with taking the #RelaytheRed pledge and the #NWHW (National Women’s Health Week) pledge. Then follow the easy tips shared in this post and in the infographics;  incorporate wellness habits, like brisk walking and eating fresh foods, into your daily practices. In honor of National Women’s Health Week, take your #ActsofRed to the next level by pledging to #RelaytheRed!  Red is the life blood coursing through your veins and when you take actions that energize you, you prolong your quality of life and sense of well being. Each day this week, we’ll be posting a different way you can reconnect to your heart health commitment—and I encourage you to invite other women to join in. Use this checklist to help plan your week, and share pictures of your heart health success with us using #RelaytheRed!

It’s never too early or late to work toward being your healthiest you! This National Women’s Health Week, we want to help you take control of your health. NWHW

I always wanted to be a surgeon, because I had a lot of admiration for my father, who is also a surgeon. I also wanted to be a heart surgeon. That was motivated by the fact that my young aunt, a sister of my dad, died in her early 20s of a correctable heart disease. Magdi Yacoub

DAY 2: SCHEDULE A VISIT TO THE DOCTOR AND CALL A RELATIVE
When was the last time you had a check up? No matter what our backgrounds or personal history include, we are susceptible to illness and know folks struggling with health concerns. We take steps towards prolonging our own lives by scheduling all our necessary appointments. TODAY.  Don’t let fear of the unknown stop you from getting the help you need. Putting off routine check ups can make the difference between an early diagnosis and early demise. Check in with loved ones about their health needs and reach out to others and encourage them to do same. It’s National Women’s Checkup Day, so make sure to call your doctor and schedule an appointment to get your heart health checked! Once you do, be sure to #RelaytheRed – call a relative and encourage her to do the same. You can use the following hashtags to share your successes on Twitter and Pinterest. #NWHW15 #RelaytheRed

We can make a commitment to promote vegetables and fruits and whole grains on every part of every menu. We can make portion sizes smaller and emphasize quality over quantity. And we can help create a culture – imagine this – where our kids ask for healthy options instead of resisting them. Michelle Obama

DAY 3: PREPARE A HEART HEALTHY MEAL AND SHARE THE RECIPE WITH A FRIEND
Do you have a favorite healthy dish? I have different foods I love during different seasons, but my two constants are fruits and vegetables. Even if cooking is not your thing, you can always make a fruit salad and add yoghurt and nuts to the mix for a satisfying treat. Make your favorite heart healthy meal today and #RelaytheRed by sharing the recipe with a friend! Check out our Heart Healthy Recipes Pinterest board for more inspiration. Comment and let us know what recipe you will share. Do use the hashtag #NWHW15 Eating healthy is a big first step for many on the road to wellness. Start today and don’t forget to stay hydrated.

DAY 4: TAKE A 20 MINUTE WALK WITH A COWORKER
What form of exercise gets you moving and feeling elated? A brisk walk by the Hudson River works for me. I took the photos above during one of my walks, with a good friend/neighbor, this afternoon. It was a bit windy but worth it. Get outside and get moving! Set aside some time today to take a 20 minute walk at lunch or after work. Share your enthusiasm for #RelaytheRed by bringing a coworker along. Click here #NWHW15 for more ideas on how to keep active! And do share what you are doing with others.

DAY 5: DE-STRESS AND ENCOURAGE A FAMILY MEMBER TO DO THE SAME
We need as many health tips and we can handle. The most important gift we can give ourselves is to take that first step and keep going. Managing stress is important for your mental health—and heart health, too! Take 10 minutes to de-stress by meditating, practicing deep breathing, or stretching. Then #RelaytheRed: text or email a family member and remind them to set aside time to de-stress. #NWHW15

Each day, The Heart Truth will share pledge images and supplemental content on our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest). As an ambassador, I am taking the Relay the Red pledge and will share updates of actions I take on Facebook and Twitter. They have provided all the graphics developed for this activation, and I will add tidbits on my effort on Facebook and by writing more about the Relay the Red pledge and my journey on this blog by the end of the week. Join Us and Have a Happy Mother’s Day!

Positive Motivation Tip: AS we develop healthier habits, our mind and body will unite to reward us.

These are really helpful infographics that pull this issue to the forefront. Women are notoriously bad at taking care of themselves, being so busy caring for others. It’s important we change that mindset!

Mental health is so important. I have noticed that lately, more and more people are becoming mentally ill. Patients on our Psychiatric Ward kept on increasing and I didn’t like the fact that the significant others don’t care that much for the patient. Sad but true. Remember guys, you have to take care of yourself mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
