Day Five: Solitude & the “Rule of Thirds”: We’re excited about today’s theme, solitude. In addition to thinking about what it means to you, also consider the placement of the subject in your shot. How can you interpret the state of being alone, or a lonely and uninhabited place? Today’s Tip: As you frame your shot, consider the “Rule of Thirds,” which is a great introductory lesson in composition.

Day Six: Connect & Tags: In this age of social media, we hear the word connect often, don’t we? … There are many ways to interpret this theme: from a gadget to a handshake, from a bridge to a gathering among friends. What’s yours? Today’s Tip: Don’t forget to tag your post! Tags group your related posts together, help to organize your site content, and tell readers what a post is about. Photography, photo101, (Between five to fifteen tags per post (or a combination of tags and categories) is good practice.

Day Seven: Big & Point of View: Today, let’s go big. Whether inside or outside, photograph something of massive size. Feel free to interpret big in your own way, and get creative with your shot. Capture all or just part of the subject. Place it in the foreground so it takes up the entire frame. Today’s Tip: Once you’ve chosen your subject, move around to experiment with your POV, or point of view.

Day Eight: Natural World & Leading Lines: A good photographer is a constant observer: always watching and studying a scene, from patterns in city traffic to movements in nature. Capture the natural world with your camera: document a moment outside, big or small. From a panorama snapped during your morning hike to a close-up of a leaf in your yard. Today’s Tip: look for natural lines that lead our eyes to different parts of a frame. Envision the bend of a stream, or the curve of a petal: how can you use these lines in your composition?

Day Nine: Warmth & the Quality of Light: Photography means “drawing with light,” and when you snap a picture with your camera, you use and record light to create an image Today, capture an image of warmth, using the sun as your source. And if the sun is nowhere to be found, don’t worry! You can interpret warmth in a different way. Today’s Tip: If you’d like to experiment more, consider the direction and quality of light.

Day Ten: Mystery & Lighting Effects: A photograph can create a certain mood and communicate an idea that transcends its subject.Today, share an image that creates a sense of mystery. A lone mitten on the sidewalk. A trail leading off into the distance. Your dog’s deep brown eyes. Intrigue us with uncertainty. Today’s Tip: To stretch yourself, manipulate the light available to you to create a particular effect — use it to cast shadows and highlights to create a moody image.
