Try The World: A Taste Of Marrakesh

04/03/2015

“I believe that Marrakesh ought to be earned as a destination. The journey is the preparation for the experience. Reaching it too fast derides it, makes it a little less easy to understand.” Tahir Shah

What’s not to love about Marrakesh? This beautiful ancient city in Morocco, North Africa, is famous for having the largest traditional Berber market (Jemaa al Fnaa)souk – where you can pick up anything, from the exquisite to the mundane.  Marrakesh; the city of Souks, Medina, and Gueliz, has great food, rich colors, music, and warm-hearted people who are passionate about their culture, welcomes the weary traveler with cuisine that could make you weep.  Yes, I know, you saw Casablanca, Marouk, Zero, or Agadir Bombay, but Marrakesh is where we go for food and respite. This month, Try The World’s Marrakesh Box is taking us on a whirlwind tour of the cuisine of Marrakesh and the items in the sea-form box made me salivate for the tastes and heady smells of the marketplace. Better yet, if you sign up today, you’ll be entered for a chance to win a trip FOR TWO to MOROCCO! Scroll down for more!!!

“We look up to see if it is day or night. If stars burn cool and the moon does shine, We take to smoke divine and wine. If a breath of sun does belch its heat, we boil coffee and prepare to eat.” Roman Payn

Try The World: A Taste Of Marrakesh – Mediterranean Gourmet Ras-el-Hanout Spices

What I love about the contents of this month’s box is how each item can be used to recreate a popular Moroccan dish like the Marrakesh Stew, Sardines with lemon, Zaalouk, Vegetables with lentils and couscous, or anything on your favorite lists of Moroccan cuisine. This month’s Try The World Marrakesh box came with six key ingredients often added to a variety of dishes: Mustapha’s Mediterranean Lemon Confit made from organic, preserved Beldi lemons known for their tangy, briny quality that will add zing to your dishes. The Mediterranean gourmet Ras-el-Hanout is a high-quality spice blend of rosebuds, coriander, cinnamon, fennel, and other spices that go into many traditional dishes; typically made with twelve spices, they can be rubbed into meats or added to stews, couscous, rice and more.

Did you know Morocco is the world’s largest exporter of Sardines? Sardines are as much a staple in Morocco as couscous, rice, lamb, vegetable stews, and delicious desserts. Sultan’s Sardines in Oil can be paired perfectly with pasta dishes, salads, or on flatbread or crusty bread sandwiches.  Once you develop a keen taste for these healthy seafood treats, they can be addictive.  The Villa Jerada Kefta Rub is an exquisite blend of spices made specifically as a rub for meats to season them deeply and provide an authentic taste in your kitchen, You won’t have to board a plane for Marrakesh to enjoy this one. You can create magic in your kitchen and fill the air with the aromatic scents of Jemaa al Fnaa or any other souk.

So you thought Argan Oil is just for hair and skin? Not quite. Berber women in South West Morocco cultivate the Argan tree and use the antioxidant-rich oil to top off fish, and vegetables or in dips to eat with bread or any side of your choice. Dip & Scoop Culinary Argan Oil is made from carefully sourced, handcrafted, and harvested batches that are chosen for their top quality and purity levels. You must taste this to believe the delicate flavor. If you’ve ever eaten North African cuisine, you’d be very familiar with the ever-so-popular and versatile Harissa Sauce. Mediterranean Gourmet Harissa Sauce is popular for its zesty flavor; a combination of peppers ground with spices that can set the palette aflame while satisfying every craving you might have for bold and tasty dishes. It can be enjoyed with quinoa, couscous, rice, and even potatoes. You can even use your sauce to enliven a wide range of dishes. Are you ready to invite the souk into your kitchen? My thoughts keep on wondering on what is Marrakesh! I imagine that it is a place where happiness is beyond compare, it is eternal and it is only for those who work on it really hard. I am mistaken with that presumption. Marrakesh is a place where natural foods aplenty. – Gil Camporazo
