Brilliant writers enable us to stand in someone else’s shoes and identify with their hopes and struggles — even if they do not look like us or share our beliefs.  They transport us to distant times and faraway lands, and today we honor a storyteller who brought these new worlds into classrooms and bedrooms all around the globe.  The works of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known to us as Dr. Seuss, have sparked a love for reading in generations of students.  His whimsical wordplay and curious characters inspire children to dream big and remind readers of all ages that “a person’s a person no matter how small.” Excerpt from President Obama’s proclamation today

In addition to today being Dr. Seuss’ birthday, today is the National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America Day. It is a day devoted to motivating our children and ourselves to read more. One way NEA is promoting this day is through its Cat-a-Van Tour that is giving away $100,000 in books, grants and treat.  Since Dr. Seuss was one of  our most celebrated and prolific children’s author, it is the perfect occasion to look at the world of books and how information we feed ourselves can encourage our growth and learning or keep us small-minded and uninformed. Even though he passed away in 1991, his books remain a staple of childhood and in July a new book:  What Pet Should I Get? will be launched. What type of books do you read? What kind of books do you encourage your children to read? Do you keep books in your home so your children can explore? Why? Why not?

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own, and you know what you know. And you are the guy who’ll decide where to go. Dr. Seuss

Dr Seuss was born Theodor Seuss Geisel on March 2, 1904 and would have celebrated another birthday today. He wrote under the pen names Dr. Seuss, Theo LeSieg and Rosetta Stone (for one book) and was a writer, poet, and cartoonist. His children’s books placed him in the hearts and minds of parents and children around the world and motivated many of us to continue to read and explore the realm of creative expression.  His 46 children’s books are in our collective memories for life; his impact crossed generations of readers. If you read any of his books, you know they were about encouraging children to learn, explore and try new things. He motivated them with storytelling and pictures and beautifully framed words. I chose this topic for our Motivation Mondays because an important key to our self-improvement, is our ability to learn new things and our drive to improve ourselves. Reading widely is an important way to stay motivated and in touch with our interests.   What type of books do you read to stay motivated? How do you refresh your mind and stay inspired?

I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities. Dr. Seuss

I grew up reading Dr Seuss’ hysterically funny, brilliant, and whimsical books that were written for children; but truly for all ages. When I had children of my own, I bought his book collections for them, and we read those rhyming, nonsensical, absolutely outlandish but incredibly entertaining and encouraging books together. The Sneetches, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, Green Eggs and Ham, and Cat in the Hat were some of my favorites. Another book, The Lorax, was made into a movie and deputed across the US.. Dr Seuss wrote 46 children’s books (over 60 books if we include those he wrote as Theo LeSieg and one as Rosetta Stone). It is terrific that his birthday was adopted as the official date for National Read Across America Day. However, what caught my attention when I went looking for information on his life was his short-lived attempt at writing for adults. Writing books for adults was not as exciting or motivating to Dr Seuss as his niche in the children’s book market. This information lit a light bulb in my head because some of us hold onto things that neither interest us nor motivate us to get up and go. What are you passionate about? What gets your creative juices flowing?

Dr Seuss had phenomenal success with his children’s books; over 222 million copies sold and translated in 15 languages. He tried his hand at adult literature and wrote three adult books: The Seven Lady Godivas (1939; reprinted 1987); about 7 naked sisters sharing their stories on their search for “horse truths,” You’re Only Old Once! (1986; Geisel was 82); about an elderly man’s visit to the Golden Years Clinic and his experiences there, and Oh, the Places You’ll Go! (January 22, 1990); about the journey of life and its challenges, including a stop at The Waiting Place where people are always waiting for something to happen. That book had the famous line “Will you succeed? Yes, you will indeed. (98¾% guaranteed.).” Oh, the Places You’ll Go! was Dr Seuss last book and the most popular of the three. The most important lesson I learned from his life is that he knew what his strengths as a children’s author was and focused on that area. He didn’t continue with his adult books and we can learn that to stay motivated, it’s imperative that we pursue what we truly love. If we only write for ratings and rankings, eventually we will either get bored or frustrated with our game. Stay in tune with who you are and follow your heart’s calling.     I LOVE Dr. Seuss! My favorite of his stories is The 500 Hats of Bartholemew Cubbins. Not one of his most famous ones, but so funny and so much fun to read aloud.

    Dr.Seuss is one of my all-time favorite authors. I wrote a speech about him and his life while in high school and he was fascinating. His stories keep my young readers captivated and as a Mom, I still appreciate the stories.

    Hokey smokes, that’s a lot of giveaways!! My son’s school just started a book giveaway (everyone is supposed to bring in a book to donate in the month of March), and I think that’s going to be fun. We bought a Dr. Suess book to donate, since it’s his birthday month. 🙂

    i have always loved Dr Seuss. I grew up with him and so did my husband and in fact some of our most treasured books are the ones that he saved from his childhood. Now we read Dr. Seuss to our kids and they very much into it still even though the youngest one is now 10. Dr. Seuss is timeless!

    I’ve always loved reading your post. i remember one speaker in a conference I attended he said “If you keep learning you keep earning, if you stop learning, you stop earning.” I could relate those lines to your “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” of Dr. Seuss

    When I was a child I never really paid attention to his rhymes, I just loved the way they sounded together. Now that I have I think he may have been my inspiration when I was younger to just be me and not care what others thought about me.

    We all read Dr. Seuss when growing up. They were weird stories for sure, but we all remember the Berenstain Bears and Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham with a smile. Haha! – Fred

    I haven’t read a single Dr. Seuss’ book when I was a child, but I have watched The Grinch which was inspired by his book entitled, How the Grinch stole Christmas. Hopefully, I could find books by Dr. Seuss for my little girl ^^

    I was such a HUGE fan of Dr. Seuss. My brothers were not into reading like I was when I was young and my parents loved it so they bought me every single Dr. Seuss book they could find! I really wish I hadn’t given away my collection as my son would’ve probably loved them too! Thanks for sharing!
