Weekly Photo Challenge: SYMMETRY

13/02/2015

The Tyger -By William Blake (via PoetryFoundation.org)
Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night;
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies.
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand, dare seize the fire?

For some strange reason, I couldn’t get this poem out of my head…. More on Symmetry later. Enjoy!

“So that ideas of sort of relaxed symmetry have been something for years that I have been concerned with because I think that symmetry is a neutral shape as opposed to a form of design.” Robert Rauschenberg

And what shoulder, & what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain,
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp,
Dare its deadly terrors clasp!

The Blake poem is split into 3 parts. More later

Weekly Photo Challenge: SYMMETRY

When the stars threw down their spears
And water’d heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

Tyger Tyger burning bright,
In the forests of the night:
What immortal hand or eye,
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

My fellow bloggers were equally creative with their selections. Check out how others interpreted the theme below.

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: Weekly Photo Challenge: SYMMETRY For this challenge, share an image of symmetry. Don’t limit yourself to architecture — you can bend this theme in any way you’d like.
A portrait of your twins? A window grille? The yellow lines of a busy road? A row of sharp points along a metal fence? Let the world inspire you.

Positive Motivation Tip: SYMMETRY reminds us of order and the linear in our surroundings and in nature… Follow the road and see where it leads you.

These are fab and the first image really appeals to me, but I wonder if it was difficult to be close to it? I remember Tyger, Tyger from infant school!

I think my eyes are rolling around. 🙂 Like it.

What perfect photos for your challenge. I’m still trying to find my yellow brick road to follow.

For me symmetry makes me dizzy.. its only because of the way my eyes focus, not like everyone else’s..

  5. 13/02/2015 5:00 pm

    A great selection showing symmetry

  6. 13/02/2015 5:04 pm

Wow this is great. Those are some wonderful photos too and really do represent symmetry quite well! Very good!

Oh my, that black and white wall is amazing! I also love the produce! I always notice when they are laid out perfectly.

I would love to take a weekly photo challenge like this. I’ve really invested time into my photography and think this would really help.

You should join in as it’s a lot of fun and a great way to connect with other photographers; amateurs and professionals.

That first image reminds me of a display they have at the museum of science in Boston. It;s so hypnotizing to look at.

Fabulous storytelling with images and words – excellent work – beautiful photos and poetry

  13. 14/02/2015 9:48 am

Symmetry. A beautiful and soothing concept which is nicely set off by more lovely photographs. I especially loved the fruit and veg one. I see these stalls in the open market sometimes, and I think of all the work they have to assembling and dismantling the whole thing every day

    • 15/02/2015 10:25 am

TY! Peter, I was actually going to add a note about watching the staff arrange them at Whole Foods and how much effort and coordination it took to pull it off. I have to say it’s one of the many things I love about the store; it has rows and rows of symmetry.

I love this photo montage. I live in NYC so the Citi bikes are the perfect example of symmetry

I love the first photo. I had a poster when i was a teenager that was very similar.

  16. 14/02/2015 6:36 pm

As usual, I love your interpretation. The bikes are my favorite. I love cities that have them (Philadelphia, my hometown, was one of the first to implement a more bike friendly community)!

  17. 14/02/2015 6:56 pm

We all like order but I think Symmetry is more along the lines of perfection and it gives me anxiety when I think about trying to live up to that standard. By the way, great post!

    • 15/02/2015 10:20 am

Very interesting point of view. I understand what you mean because the reverse makes me uncomfortable. TY! 🙂

    • 15/02/2015 10:15 am

Yes. Now I know that all those pictures I take of rows and rows of things are symmetry in photography. I guess I’m in love with order and precision. 🙂 TY!

I do love that photo and the striking color contrasts. I have always liked visiting museums.

  31. 15/02/2015 1:23 pm

I love all of the contrast in these pictures. And even with the museum one (the black and white one in particular) making me a little dizzy, my favorite is the vegetables.

    • 15/02/2015 7:55 pm

Thank you! i have to confess that when I was at the Museum and stood in front of it, it looked like it was moving! Ha! 🙂

These photos really appealed to the OCD side of me. Like little soldiers all lined up in a row. I find a special kind of beauty in that.

  33. 15/02/2015 4:35 pm

I love how you capture New York and symmetry at the same time. When we have nice weather, I love Citibikes to take a trip around my neighborhood.

    • 15/02/2015 7:40 pm

You are a brave woman! I prefer to drive or walk in the city.
Those cab drivers are nuts and would run you off the road on a bike.
I see them competing with cyclists all the time. 🙂
