Weekly Photo Challenge: SCALE Jonathan Borofsky Sculpture – The Dancers in Denver, Co

It’s easy to see that these beautiful sculptural dancers, aptly named The Dancers by Jonathan Borofsky, dominated their space. I was told by our guide that it was a Henry Moore but it isn’t. The Dancers were in an open park in downtown Denver and I gasped when I saw them. I turned a corner and, suddenly, there they were. They towered over the church steeple, the lamp-post, and even the theater building across the way. I thought they’d be perfect for this exercise. It’s remarkable that when we juxtapose two or more things of varying sizes, we can see the true scale of each one. To give you a sense of their size, I offer you two views that I shot that day.

Weekly Photo Challenge: SCALE – The Under-bridge Troll in Seattle, WA
There does seem to be a sense in which physics has gone beyond what human intuition can understand. We shouldn’t be too surprised about that because we’re evolved to understand things that move at a medium pace at a medium scale. We can’t cope with the very tiny scale of quantum physics or the very large-scale of relativity. Richard Dawkins
The Fremont Troll or Troll under the bridge by Steve Badanes is in Seattle, WA. It is quite famous and tourists come from everywhere to take pictures and pose with it. I took this on my last day in Seattle before I headed for the airport. The taxi stopped for a bit, I jumped out and took this shot as the young man atop was posing with a banner that read Seattle. He was from Europe. I wish I had spent a bit more time to get a shot that didn’t include part shadow … but hey, that’s what you call an instant shot and it does show scale.

Sometimes I think that creativity is a matter of seeing, or stumbling over, un-obvious similarities between things – like composing a fresh metaphor, but on a more complex scale. David Mitchell
This unusual tree stump is a piece of installation art and I took the photo at one of my favorite places to visit – Storm King Art Museum. They have a ton of outdoor installation art and you could spend all day there and not miss a bit or miss the hours going by. It’s up north in NY and I’d encourage you to visit it when you come to New York. See how tiny the people are next to it? It is truly huge. Have a scaled back weekend!

Great pictures! Here’s a question about scale that I’ve often wondered. We all view the world through scale. Meaning we all judge the size of things based on other things. Here’s some food for thought. When you look at a ruler from across the room, it looks tiny. When you hold that ruler directly in front of your eye, it takes up your entire field of vision. At what point between both of those extremes is the ruler actually the size that we PERCEIVE it to be? Chew on that for awhile…

The statues of the dancers are so awesome! I love the way you can almost feel the movement. The troll under the bridge has always thrilled me! I want to see it some day!

Oh I soooo miss going to outside art shows – this was fun just to see here – so very cool – when my son was little even to college age – I took him often and since he was an artist he enjoyed – I wish I go here!

I have to admit when I saw the dancers it instantly put a smile on my face and I wanted to start dancing. I love dancing so no surprise there. II would have loved to see the troll under the bridge. I wish I would have known it was there when I was visiting. I love all of the photos.
