Motivation Mondays: Comfort Zone

Brene Brown: The power of vulnerability

Be willing to step outside your comfort zone once in a while; take the risks in life that seem worth taking. The ride might not be as predictable if you’d just planted your feet and stayed put, but it will be a heck of a lot more interesting. Edward Whitacre, Jr.

Do you know when you are languishing in your Comfort Zone? What is stopping you from stepping out? Some years ago, I was offered the opportunity to move out to Los Angeles for a job that would maximize all my training and skills set. I was afraid because, even though I’d moved a lot in my life, I was very comfortable in New York. I agonized over making a decision to take on this job that would stretch me, teach me, push me to the edge, and I felt this barrier or wall of excuses arise. What about the kids? The family? Our home? I’d gone through a rigorous set of interviews and I wanted the job but, l wished it were in NY.

Eventually, a friend advised me to take Tony Robbins course that includes a Fire Walk. I thought my friend had lost her mind. But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. I became motivated. I signed up, flew to Atlanta and took the course. It was one of the most life changing events in my life. A month later, I was on my way to California. A lot happened to get me adjusted in Los Angeles, but each time the fear of pushing through my comfort zone arose, I would remind myself that if I could walk on fire, what was my excuse? We have periods in our lives, when we choose the path of no resistance because it feels safe but, true growth is not there. Unless, we give ourselves permission to take that first step, take that risk, and believe we will be fine, we’d never know our full strength.  Step out and face that mountain.

“Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new.” Brian Tracy

Motivation Mondays: Comfort Zone - Face the Fear

Motivation Mondays: Comfort Zone – Face the Fear

As you move outside of your comfort zone, what was once the unknown and frightening becomes your new normal. Robin S. Sharma
If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair. C. S. Lewis

What are you afraid would happen if you moved your feet in a new direction? When I was thinking of coming to the US from London, I was excited and terrified. Like any other immigrant story, it would mean leaving the comfort of family and friends, and entering a new world with new customs and even, for some, a new language. I was lured by the prospects of a loving relationship and the opportunity to get away from the norm. I wanted to do it and yet everyone, including my Dad, told me it was not such a great idea for a young woman to venture out into a new country on her own. I applied to a college, got accepted, and convinced my Dad that I would honor my studies and focus on my education. I was motivated to take that next step. With some reservation, he agreed and gave me his blessings.

On a cold February morning, I was off to the USA. The relationship never materialized, and I found that I needed to focus on something fast, and get with the program of pushing past my FEAR! I committed to my studies and made plans to leave the area for a new setting. New York City called me, and l responded by moving there. The first year was incredibly hard and, many a day, l imagined throwing in the towel and going home but I stayed here. I wanted my Dad to know that l was keeping my promise and hadn’t lost my métier. Sometimes, we have to let go of our security to grow and find who and what we are truly made of. What stops YOU?

Motivation Mondays: Comfort Zone - Step out of your home

Motivation Mondays: Comfort Zone – Step out of your home

I want to challenge you today to get out of your comfort zone. You have so much incredible potential on the inside. The Creator has put gifts and talents in you that you probably don’t know anything about. Joel Osteen

What do you wish you could accomplish today? Next month? This year? Do you feel stuck? If you are feeling complacent, take a moment to think about what’s causing  the lethargy. If you feel you are on track, nudge yourself to reach out make a connection,  take a chance at starting something new, and feeling a bit vulnerable and exposed. Why bother? You might ask. Because there is great opportunity for growth there. With some motivation, we’ll soon be on our way to meeting new challenges. If you chose not to be bothered, imagine the pain you’d feel in that nursing home, when you realize that you let fear get in the way. Get out of your own way, step out of your comfort zone and live!

Positive Motivation Tip: Complacency is the road to inaction. Step out of your comfort zone and LIVE!

The comfort zone is a state within which a person feels at ease, familiar, in control, and experiences low anxiety. A person in this state uses a limited set of behaviors to deliver a steady level of performance, usually without a sense of risk.[1] Wikipedia

As they say, life begins outside your comfort zone. We should really dare to take risk and go out of the ordinary because it is in that path that we make a difference.

Great post, Elizabeth, one that resonates with me. I’ve been thinking about fear, taking chances and stepping out of faith and this thought occurred to me: you’ve got to be willing to step off the edge trusting/accepting that you could fall and do it anyway. Once I had that thought, my fear (and the headache I gave myself) disappeared.

I have trouble stepping outside of my comfort zone sometimes, but I try when I can. It’s definitely not easy, though.

Frankly speaking, there’s nothing wrong with staying in our comfort zones. Somehow I feel that this term is abused by some people, who use it as an excuse for their lack of action to break out of a situation whereby they’re actually not getting the contentment they feel they deserve.

    • 29/01/2015 11:41 am

If you are happy in your comfort zone, stay there. I don’t see how people can abuse the term; this is not a dictatorship. You either stay in or you step out. It’s a choice. 🙂

I always enjoy reading your stuff. I have done this often to get over fears that I have. I just spoke about this at work yesterday. I was afraid of public speaking, I took a theater class. I am afraid of flying, I jumped out of a plane. Stepping out of your zone is difficult but it is definitely rewarding.

    • 27/01/2015 10:00 am

Agreed. After 9/11 I became paralyzed about flying. The new job in California required a lot of cross-country flying. I had to take a deep breath and get on that first flight to Atlanta for Tony’s course. All of it, including the fire walk, was empowering.

It is so hard for people to “step outside of their comfort zone” but it almost always has to be done. I believe that if you stay in a comfort zone, then you become stagnant. Great post.

I stepped out of my comfort zone when I decided to move thousands of miles away to a new culture, new surroundings, new everything, and away from my family. Surprisingly, like what everybody said, I fit right in. There’s one thing that I miss so bad at home though, the food. 🙂

I can’t imagine walking on fire, or glass. I can’t even begin to wrap my head around those people that lay on a bed of nails and then add to it by having bricks or concrete blocks on their chest. Crazy. I know its mind over matter and their is a right way to do it, but not really a risk I want to take. When it comes to stuff like that, perhaps staying in my comfort zone is best.
