My philosophy for a happy life | Sam Berns | TEDxMidAtlantic

Christmas is the spirit of giving without a thought of getting. It is happiness because we see joy in people. It is forgetting self and finding time for others. It is discarding the meaningless and stressing the true values. Thomas S. Monson

What gives you joy? If we stop to think about our day so far, what has given you joy?  When we think about the word “joy,” the answers that arise in our hearts range from the simple to the sublime. I asked my kids and one said, ” Pancakes and playing with our family cat.’ The other said, “Crunchy peanut butter!” For me right now, I’d say “Holiday lights .” Sure, we know the obvious answers we all repeat, Family, Friends, Health, Happiness, Charity and such. All of them are equally paramount in our lives, but my question was about being present and joyful in the moment.  If we can stay present and see the good in us and around us, we are steps closer to our source of  unmitigated joy.

In the video above, Sam Berns touches on his life living with  Projeria. He shares his philosophy for living a happy life and they include common sense answers that we live by;  Live a life of gratitude by being okay with what you can’t do and enjoying what you can do. Choose your company wisely and be around people who lift you up and encourage you. Part of our motivation in life is to do well so we can celebrate with friends and family. How can we stay motivated if we are surrounded by emotional vampires and sirens? Be in the company of those who lift you up.  While staying present to circumstances and how we respond to them, it is always best to keep moving forward and celebrate the life we do have. Everything around us and how we respond to them contribute to our daily decision to be motivated to get out of bed or stay there. Find your joy inside and as Sam says, never miss a party or an occasion to dance and celebrate life.

“Find a place inside where there’s joy, and the joy will burn out the pain.” Joseph Campbell

Full Speech: Jim Carrey’s Commencement Address at the 2014 MUM Graduation

Today I choose life. Every morning when I wake up I can choose joy, happiness, negativity, pain… To feel the freedom that comes from being able to continue to make mistakes and choices – today I choose to feel life, not to deny my humanity but embrace it. Kevyn Aucoin

Are your daily decisions/actions based on love or fear?  Jim Carrey gave a powerful graduation speech in the video above and his words will surprise and move you.  Jim is a well-known actor/comedian who has had his share of life challenges. However, in this speech, he takes a more reflective tone and sheds light on the beauty and power of being present and appreciating what we have. Be present. Jim also shared something that many have read or heard in the Secret: Ask the universe for what you want/need. You may interpret it anyway you wish, but often we forget to ask for help to get our needs met. If we are motivated to achieve our goals, asking for help when needed, is imperative.

Do you ever laugh just for the heck of it? Find humor in your surroundings and condition to keep you laughing, and then, don’t forget to share it. Some of us go through life with rigid, inflexible views about what is right and wrong. We waste energy always trying to be right. Let go! Instead of fixating on minutiae, relax and seek joy in situations. As my Dad would say, when you look for joy, bliss will come out to greet you.  Share it.  Another key point Jim made and I hope this resonates with all of us: Do what you love. Even if you fail at it, at least, it’s your choice not someone else’s idea of what you should do. Follow your path happily, stop comparing notes, and stay flexible… All of these common sense tips add to joy in our lives. What has given you joy today?

Overcoming hopelessness | Nick Vujicic | TEDxNoviSad

When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy. When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight. Khalil Gibran

What are you looking for? More often than not, we miss opportunities right under our noses because we keep moving our mouths and negating our blessings with negative thoughts. If you’ve ever heard Nick Vujicic speak, you know he is not only a gifted orator, but also an inspired teacher. We all know the power of words  to maim and/or motivate us.  Nick walks us through his moments of darkness and shares how hope and faith carried him through life’s challenges. We must look for those moments of joy in the darkness and remind ourselves that we are perfectly made and enough. Nick’s message touched my spirit and I encourage you to listen to it.

A great teacher once said, “We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.” Buddha. Don’t let your thoughts poison your joy. Tell your children you care, that they are beautiful, that they are loved and that they matter. Tell yourself the same. Nick wraps up his talk on “Overcoming hopelessness,”  by saying that we should be a miracle for someone else and take one day at a time. Even if we fall down, we can and must get up. Even if your life is not what you desire, don’t give up on your dreams; make those obstacles, those barriers, those walls into doors. … follow your joy. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

I believe in power of positivity. A smile and a laugh could go a long way. I met a young man who had four recurrences of his nasopharyngeal cancer despite radio and chemo therapy. However when you meet him and his wife, they are always smiling and positive. I think that is why he is lasting so long. – Fred

The thing about me is that I am happy with simplest things than society wants me to be.. I am more happy with friends at the streets smoking a cigarette than in a luxury hotel.. I am more happy being alone and writing my diary than being with people I do not enjoy being with.. Happiness is something inside of us, we and only we know what makes us happy and sometimes is so simple but we want to make it complicated.. Thank you so much for this post.. We can find out how to be truly happy by asking ourselves simple questions such as What gives you joy? <3

I love the quote by Helen Keller. Very intelligent lady.

  27. 23/12/2014 5:32 am

As I grow older, the stuff that make me happy change. I’ve noticed how I prefer actual, face-to-face human interactions over presents. I make time to bond with my Mom. I make sure that I work hard enough to be able to travel without asking money from my parents. And, this change in me have been giving me not just joy but peace of mind as well. PS. I’m with you on the holiday lights. Those make me happy too. Merry Christmas to you and your family!!

  30. 23/12/2014 7:38 am

My heart fills with joy the first thing every morning as I am awakened by my three little dogs. They are always so excited for the new day – their excitement reminds me to be joyous as well.

  31. 23/12/2014 8:00 am

The people mentioned above are truly inspiring. But what really caught me are these words: ” Live a life of gratitude by being okay with what you can’t do and enjoying what you can do.”

I needed to read that because I have a lot of sickness therefore limiting me to a lot of things and it really frustrates me. At this very moment, I’m convincing myself that I can eventually accept that there are things I really can’t do and I should be okay with it. Same way, I’m encouraging myself to try out new things I can actually do. I might just end up enjoying it.

Joy isn’t something we just wait to be delivered in our doorstep. Joy is a choice. If we choose to be happy, we will be. But if we choose to focus on the negative things, it’s already our choice to be miserable.

  32. 23/12/2014 9:19 am

Truly enjoyed this post. Although this is supposed to be the season of joy, so many are stressed and depressed. We are doing a more simply Christmas this year and after losing my best friend to cancer this year, I will say that being with those I love brings me great joy and is all I need. It’s the little things – the bonfire we will have, sharing stories, family game night, driving around looking at lights, and eating my dad’s fudge (which is being shipped to me this year!!). May you have a blessed Christmas and find lots of JOY!!
