Weekly Photo Challenge: Angular – Wishbone outdoor sculpture/installation by Mark Handforth
The word angular describes objects that have sharp angles, such as something with many corners and few soft curves. Vocabulary.com
This week’s photo challenge was an interesting one. We had to move from familiar objects and nature to abstract objects, angles and shapes. I have to say that even though I understand the concept of angular, I had to look it up in the dictionary to grasp the term in order to visualize what our artist in residence for this week wanted. I found two definitions I liked. One was: “an object, outline, or shape having angles or sharp corners,” and the other is above. Fortunately, I was able to revert back to my shots of outdoor installations at Storm King Art Center and elsewhere. Above are two Alexander Calder installations and Wishbone by Mark Handforth. I don’t think I did the Handforth piece justice as I was a bit far back. Ditto The Calder Arch. Next time I’m in the areas where they are displayed, I will try better angles. Both The Arch and Wishbone are quite huge. Plus, I love the idea of a steel wishbone for lasting luck.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Angular – Frank Gehry–designed Richard B. Fisher Center
Above, I have another Calder taken in Chicago near the Federal Reserve Building. It is aptly named Flamingo because its neck curves down like one. The Frank Gehry designed Richard B. Fisher Center for Performing Arts has an unusual roof with many angular shapes. I love that dramatic building especially when it is lit up at night. It is efficiently designed and quite spacious and welcoming inside. Frank Gehry is a highly regarded architect known for these types of gravity defiant roof designs and he has done many others, including EMP Museum in Seattle and, of course, the famous one: Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. Have you seen any Frank Gehry designed buildings? What was your first reaction?

Weekly Photo Challenge: Angular – Beethoven’s Quartet by Mark di Suvero at Storm King
Thankfully, Storm King Art Center came to my rescue for this challenge. I found almost all (except for two) the pieces I needed there. The two above are examples of more beautiful, outdoor art installations that look better in their landscape than they do in photos. Don’t you just love that Mark di Suvero sculpture? If you are ever in the New York area, I would encourage you to visit this and other locations that have outdoor sculptural art. Hope you enjoyed the selection.

The outdoor structures looks really amazing. We also have a nice outdoor structure in our global city since they have an art foundation who handles this.

I think you captured the angular challenge really well. These types of photography challenges and capturing different elements and subjects are great ideas.
These sculptures all look amazing. Abstract objects always look so intriguing. Great photos.
Good choice of pictures that show angular objects. My response to this photo challenge happens to be Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao. I just returned from Spain after visiting a few cities there. I had only seen his Walt Disbey Concert Hall in LA. Check out my post for my impression.
