Colors can stir emotions within us, tell stories, and transform our images. Today, use one color to add life or drama to your shot.
Day 1 –A Pop of Color: Originally, the red cardinal in the snow was going to be the lead photo, but I couldn’t resist that precious moment when those two baby giraffes turned to stare down a deep blue peacock who proudly strutted in front of them. He moved as if he owned the world. Their mom was looking in the opposite direction; it’s a protective stance to avoid surprise attacks from behind.

Study architectural forms, and also train your eye to look for shots that will translate well in black and white.
Day 2 –Architecture: I love architecture and take shots of architectural structures all the time. These two buildings are in Manhattan and I felt they spoke to me and the assignment. The black and white versions are in daguerreotype which sharpens all the black edges to show definition in the buildings.

Capture a fleeting moment and experiment with blur and movement.
Day 3 – Moment: Moments are so precious and, in the bat of an eyelid, we can miss an opportunity. The seagulls were fighting for food at my local Sam’s Club and so I stopped to photograph them. This was one of those moments, hence, the shopping cart. The Giraffes are my favorite. That moment was magic. We stood at the Bronx Zoo watching them and wondering if, at any moment, they were going to kick that proud Peacock’s behind. They didn’t. Haha!

Day 4 – Swarm: The swarm was a hard one to fill as I don’t hang out in crowds. I finally found some photos that I think fit the bill. When I find the full shot of the flamingos, I will upload it. They were on a longer piece of land. The birds can speak for themselves… What do you think?

It’s a big world out there! Show us what you see in a landscape
Day 5 – Landscape: I love landscapes, so this was a tough one to fill because I have a ton of landscape shots. I hope this got you thinking of getting away. I love Storm King’s outdoor museum. It showcases a very impressive collection of outdoor installations and scultures from many famous artists like Alexander Calder, Henry Moore and many others. I also love the fact that it’s not far from me. If you visit Munich, take a drive out to Lichtenstein Castle. It’s breathtaking and good exercise walling up to the top. As you can see from the shot I included here, the views from the top are spectacular. I have more with other landscape views I took from the cross bridge. I’d love to visit again but will have to wait till next time. Have you been to either locations? Enjoy!

The giraffes and the peacock photo is a beauty. The giraffes are so curious about the peacock as he struts along with not a care in the world ….it tells a story, and stirs a warm feeling inside me. I love it.
I found your architecture ones very interesting, I love looking at buildings too, there is so much to see in their shapes and different designs. Well done!

Thank you Alissa! I have three Canon cameras that I alternate when I take photos. One is the DSLR EOS Rebel T1i, the other two are PowerShot SX130 IS, and SX500 IS. I also have several lenses that I use from wide angle to telephoto to macro. I have to admit that I’m a lens collector and probably have more than I need. I have some inexpensive and some very expensive lens. I also shoot with B+W filters (made in Germany). Since you asked, my dream is to get a Leica. Alfred Eisenstaedt used a Leica IIIa rangefinder to shoot the iconic Times Square picture of a sailor kissing a nurse at the end of WWII. The painting is the very colorful one from Photo 101 – Week 2.

How very interesting! I’m starting to realise that there’s so much to learn from your site on photography! These exercises are great, I love landscapes and I think I can take a pretty passable picture of landscapes and food…but I also want to know about colors and to truly have a good perspective on adding it into the picture.

Thank you! That shot was hard to get because I had to stay inside and not scare the birds off my balcony. I spent a few hours that day taking tons of awful shots. Eventually, with a lot of waiting and patience I got a few that I like. Now you know… I’m glad you asked. Phew!

This is a lovely set of photos you got here. I’m trying to work on my “architecture”, “structures”, and interior shots – as easy they seem to be, taking shots of them are a lot harder than I thought.
Taking pictures of landscapes are just some of my favorite subjects when taking photos. You’ve shown amazing photos!
I love that picture of a bright red cardinal in the pure white snow! I want to take a picture of that myself. I hope I get the chance to see it. Where did you take that photo? Is it taken just this November?
Thank you! I took it in the winter months earlier this year. I have bird feeders on my balcony and they attract a lot of local birds. I feed them year round because they’ve gotten used to it. Birds are hard to photograph close up because they are very alert and easily scared.
Will you show some more from the Storm King museum sometime? I love sculpture and this photo hints at somewhere awesome I’d like to see!

Being in Ohio, there is nothing more beautiful in the winter than the bright red of a Cardinal amongst the snow. They should be coming out soon too, we’ve already gotten all the snow.

Beautiful pictures! The color is so important to us, it would be awful to live without it. The quote at the beginning got me thinking. Ecuadorian flag has red in it but Finnish flag does not. It’s blue and white. And I think the flags to visualize a huge difference in the personality of Finns and Ecuadorians.
