Rose Royce – Wishing On A Star

Rose Royce – Wishing On A Star Lyrics | AzLyrics
Songwriters: Calvin, Billie Rae
Published/Lyrics © Warner/Chappell Music, Inc.
I’m wishin’ on a star
To follow where you are
I’m wishin’ on a dream
To follow what it means

I’m wishin’ on a star
To follow where you are
I’m wishin’ on a dream
To follow what it means

And I wish on all the rainbows that I see
I wish on all the people who really dream
And I’m wishin’ on tomorrow, praying it’ll come
And I’m wishin’ on all the lovin’ we’ve ever done

What’s the first song that comes to mind? When you are asked to name a song or poem you’ve committed to memory, what’s the first thing that pops into your head? Don’t edit or censor yourself. Go for that first impulse and then reflect on why, what and all the memories attached to the experience. When today’s prompt, By Heart, caught my attention, it took me back, way back, to a time when love was innocent and having a boyfriend meant someone you had an occasional movie date with. It was probably a time many of us spent imagining what love, friendship and relationships could become. I grew up surrounded by music and enjoyed listening to it. I love lots of songs yet, this one popped right into my head and I decided to explore it.

Beyonce – Wishing on a star

I never thought I’d see
A time when you would be
So far away from home
So far away from me

Just think of all the moments that we spent
I just can’t let you go, for me you were meant
And I didn’t mean to hurt you, but I know
That in the game of lovin’, reap what you sow

I feel it’s time we should make up, baby
I feel it’s time for us to get back together
And make the best of things, oh, baby, when we’re together
Whether or never

I feel it’s time we should make up, baby
I feel it’s time for us to get back together
And make the best of things, oh, baby, when we’re together
Whether or never

Does it have a special meaning? Yes, it does. The first time I heard Wishing On A Star, a song on Rose Royce‘s II: In Full Bloom album, I stopped what I was doing and listened to it intently. It spoke to my heart and all the tender yet, confused and painful spaces inside. Ironically, even though they were an American band, this song was hugely popular in the UK and less so in the States. As I listened to Gwen “Rose” Dickey sing, I was flooded with memories of everyone I’d ever met and never saw again; friends and family lost. Some had moved far away and others, had passed away. It was more than a romantic love song to me, and I yearned for the days when every single person I knew was alive and well. It made me sad. Yet, I got a copy and listened to it over and over again. I memorized every inflection and nuanced vocalization in that song. It took a while before something else replaced it. Is there a song that had the same impact on you?

Rose Royce – Wishing On A Star 1977 -THE ORIGINAL- (by SUNNY RAINBOW)

I’m wishing on a star
To follow where you are
I’m wishin’ on a dream
To follow what it means

And I wish on all the rainbows that I see
I wish on all the people we’ve ever been
And I’m hopin’ on all the days to come and days to go
And I’m hopin’ on days of lovin’ you so

I’m wishin’ on a star
To follow where you are
I’m wishing on a star, whoa-oh
And I wish on all the rainbows that I see

I’m wishin’ on a star
To follow where you are
I’m wishin’ on a star
ooh ohh now, how many times has it been

Is there another reason it has stayed, intact, in your mind? I had to consider this question for a while. Why did it resonate so deeply and why did it pop up now? If you saw my Cover Album post, I didn’t include it even though it’s one of my all time favorites. I think it had more to do with pain, change and shifting winds. I’m in the throes of changing priorities, and with it has come some wistful memories of when life was simpler and not complicated. So I will stop now to listen to this song again, and remind myself that no condition is permanent. Life, like the stars has bright and dark moments. This too shall pass.

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: By Heart  You’re asked to recite a poem (or song lyrics) from memory — what’s the first one that comes to mind? Does it have a special meaning, or is there another reason it has stayed, intact, in your mind?

Positive Motivation Tip: When old songs stop by to remind us of times past, pause and revisit places that need to be healed. Hold on to the good memories and release the rest.

Yes, there are many songs that I have been listening to but some just stand out when I carefully analyze the meaning of the lyrics. An example is “It’s Gonna Make Sense” by Michael Learns to Rock.

One of the greatest songs of all time. So many remakes and samples of it too. I just think when I hear this that I have to sit back and reflect on life.
