Weekly Photo Challenge: Descent… to St Patrick’s Cathedral, New York
For this week’s challenge on – descent – I decided to go with what we see when a plane is descending; a bird’s-eye view on descent. I was arriving in Seattle after a 4 hour delay and I was eager to get off and get some rest. I looked out my window and saw a yellow cab in a sea of grey and white and reached for my camera. Yes, I know, that view of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is a descent of the unpleasant variety – vertigo experience. We took an elevator to the top of Rockefeller Center and then walked up a narrow staircase to the roof. It was both exhilarating and frightening. All of my descent pictures gave me an experience of the vastness of earth. From above, you see far beyond your usual frame of reference and it is powerful.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Descent… to Schiphol Amsterdam Airport
If you looked closely at the photo, you’d see a bit of the plane’s wing. This was a stress-free flight from Paris. I was meant to go back to New York but was diverted to an Amsterdam bound flight. We spent about 3-4 hours at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport waiting and waiting for information on our New York flight. Finally, they told us about the change (Overbooking?) and then we ended up here. I was glad to be heading home. Thankfully, the ground crew was very nice and welcoming… Oh yeah, this was my first experience with one of those full body scanners at Schiphol Amsterdam Airport. It was a recent installation post 9/11 … stepping into the scanner felt like I was entering the twilight zone. Honestly, I love traveling but some of the experiences can be memorable in a not-so-fun way. But hey, it gives you stories to tell.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Descent… to Manhattan, New York
Manhattan is a beautiful city, and some of the best ways to see it in its full glory is descending on a plane at night, and looking uptown or downtown from the top of a very tall building. This was taken in one of the buildings adjacent to the new One World Trade Center building; also built as a memorial site to replace the Twin Towers. From the top of the building next door, you could see far ahead in 4 directions and it was breath-taking. I love Manhattan and, whenever I travel, I look forward to seeing that familiar skyline again. What about you?

No, but they take very good care of it. It’s on 5th Avenue which has some of the fanciest stores in New York. The real estate in that area is pricey and well maintained.

I’m lovin’ the image showing the descent into Manhattan, NY. We drive there so I haven’t had the chance to really see it in the air…or if I did, I was sleeping or something because I don’t remember what it looks like. I bet it looks magical at night.

I guess descending can be good or bad depending on your perspective. Very lovely and mind opening post.
In life we all go through many ups and downs and we definitely need to learn to take it in stride. This is such an interesting way to look at the descending aspect of life. I love the pictures and was mostly drawn to the one with St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

There are a lot of descents here (and ascents too). And I never grow tired of looking how we come from higher up from the Andes to the sealevel and how the climat and the vegetation change. It is amazing!

I think the best view I’ve had from an airplane was flying over the Atlantic and seeing how blue the waters were near Greenland. The Icebergs really make it look so different (really bright blue) from the deep blue depths.
