Weekly Photo Challenge: NightTime

27/09/2014

“Night time is really the best time to work. All the ideas are there to be yours because everyone else is asleep.”  Catherine O’Hara

O wild and wondrous midnight,
There is a might in thee
To make the charmed body
Almost like spirit be,
And give it some faint glimpses
Of immortality.
~James Russell Lowell, Midnight

In every city in the world, night time is magical. Every thing glows…  I love Catherine’s quote because  I do my best work at night. I love the stillness and the way everything that could be a distraction fades away.  At night, I’m in my element; alert and ready to explore the creative realm. Day time has its charm but the night is for those souls who thrive while  everyone else  is ready to settle in for the night and sleep.  I give you NYC during the November/December holiday season… Enjoy!

“I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day.”  Vincent Van Gogh

When the moon, after covering herself with darkness as in sorrow,
at last throws off the garments of her widowhood,
she does not at once expose herself impudently to the public gaze;
but for a time remains veiled in a transparent cloud,
till she gradually acquires courage to endure
the looks and admiration of beholders.
by Augustus William Hare and Julius Charles Hare

What we miss in the day time, shines at night. That is why when I travel, I always take night time shots.  The moon holds sway at night and, like a demanding diva, spreads her wings and shines with confidence. This year, we had a couple of Super-moons and I waited patiently to capture them. What is night without the moon? What is night without the glittering stars or night time holiday lights?

Some praise the Lord for Light,
The living spark;
I thank God for the Night
The healing dark.
~Robert William Service

During the holidays, in major cities around the world, we often see extraordinary light shows. In NYC, the stores compete to outdo each other with their window displays. Rockefeller Center draws the home crowds, and tourists alike, to her bosom to see the giant Christmas tree and everything lit up. I always venture out to look and enjoy.  There is a certain spiritual touch to it all and we feel a closeness to our faith/beliefs.  Each year seems different even though the idea rarely changes… It’s that electric energy that comes with night time and extreme lighting. What about you? Is your city lit up during the holiday season? What are your experiences of night time?

This post was inspired by a Daily Post Prompt: Weekly Photo Challenge: Night Time For this week’s challenge, What nocturnal photos do you like taking? Whether it’s a starry sky, a street lamp, or the shadows cast by your cat, share them with us. Your shot can be outdoors or indoors, blurry or crisp, overexposed or ominously dark. As every owl (and night owl) knows, nighttime is when the real action starts.

Positive Motivation Tip: Nighttime holds its share of secrets and joys. What you choose to do is up to you… Keep it joyful!

    I know what you mean about night time. My First post was called “Waking thoughts” because I woke up in the middle of the night, and wanted to scribble down my feelings, which is what happens if I don’t get up and record them ( groan ) The pattern continues to this day, but it does have its compensations. Of course I love the photos, and I’m so happy to see you posting 🙂
