Haiku: Dear Hello Kitty…

Hello Kitty 1st USA Convention

“Celebrate Hello Kitty’s 40th anniversary at the first ever Hello Kitty convention in the world!”

The ubiquitous, blank-faced and, as the world assumed, feline cartoon character Hello Kitty is not in fact a cat, announced The Los Angeles Times. It’s a little girl named Kitty White. Via The NYTimes

Dear Hello Kitty…
Happy Anniversary!
Why the new changes?

Happy Birthday Boo
My kids knew you as Kitty
Anthropomorphic

My Kitty girlfriend…
Convention time is calling
Who will you come as?

What Joan Rivers might have said:
Hey, Hello Kitty!
WTF! Can we talk!? B#$%^&h!
What’s this BS news!?

Hello Kitty was always an important part of my household. When my girls were little, they saw the show and then a close friend traveled to Japan and bought them lots of Hello Kitty stuff. After that we were hooked.

Hello Kitty is not a cat. You read that right. When Yano was preparing her written texts for the exhibit at the Japanese American National Museum, she says she described Hello Kitty as a cat. “I was corrected — very firmly,” she says. “That’s one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it’s called Charmmy Kitty.” Via The LA Times

You’re someone else now…
A new cast of characters
Mom, Dad, Twin sister!?

Is this a cast change?
Can we play your family?
My kids? Random friends?

Kids grew up with you…
You always were gijinka
Now, A girl? A cat?

What Joan Rivers might have said:
Schmuck!  Last time I looked…
You were a cat in a dress
You hoochy mama!

Frankly, there’s nothing wrong with being anthropomorphic… Mickey Mouse is too. Today, one of my kids is a double major in Asian studies and film, with a concentration in Japanese… Both are into film, anime, manga and more. There was an influence there. So to change up on us was odd, to put it mildly. We do love the character and this is a celebration with a twist assignment and a touch of humor…. with love!

Hello Kitty is British.Kitty is actually named Kitty White and she has a full back story. She is a Scorpio. She loves apple pie. And she is the daughter of George and Mary White. “She has a twin sister,” adds Yano. “She’s a perpetual third-grader. She lives outside of London. Via The LA Times

We thought we knew you…
An Anthropomorphism
But now you’re British!

Is this just PR?
Will Charmmy Kitty be pleased?
To hear you’re human…

So dear Kitty White
Hello to your family!
Bye Hello Kitty…

What Joan Rivers might have said:
Look B#$%#h! I hate you…
Go drink some milk, f*&@#&&%g  C%^*T!
You’re a piece of work!

Yes she would too: Read a few of my favorites from Joan Rivers below!

This was meant as a tongue-firmly-planted-in-cheek ode to a popular childhood cartoon my kids adored. I know Sanrio has since retracted their claims that she is human … sorta. She’s still very popular globally and I bet that Convention in LA will sell out. Do you have any memories of her? What was your reaction when you heard the controversial statements?

RIP Joan Rivers - Keep em Laughing in Heaven

RIP Joan Rivers – Keep ’em Laughing in Heaven!

Yes she would too: Below are a few of my favorites from Joan Rivers:
“Grandchildren can be so f-cking annoying. How many times can you go, ‘And the cow goes moo and the pig goes oink’? It’s like talking to a supermodel.”
“Why should a woman cook? So her husband can say ‘My wife makes a delicious cake’ to some hooker?”
“Russell Brand has announced that he plans to write a series of children’s books. First up: ‘Horton Hears a Heroin Dealer.'”
“I don’t exercise. If God had wanted me to bend over, he would have put diamonds on the floor.”
On a serious note, I send my deepest condolences to Melissa Rivers and family. Joan Rivers was one heck of a funny lady and I followed her career over the years. She was hysterically funny, energetic, and had no filter. She wasn’t afraid to cross the humor line… I will miss her special brand of humor. This little Hello Kitty ditty is in honor of her. She would have used stronger language like: Hello Kitty …  F%^&^% You! I know. Keep ’em laughing in heaven Joan!

This post was inspired by a Daily Post Prompt: Cast Change: You’ve just been named the casting director of your favorite television show (or movie franchise). The catch: you must replace the entire cast — with your friends and family. Who gets which role?

Positive Motivation Tip: Find the joy and humor in all situations and then keep em laughing. Life is short. Enjoy the ride.

Yeah, this kitty change was confusing We had a whole overnight trip to NYC staged just to get a free gift at the Grand Opening of the Hello Kitty store in Times Square sometime around 2000. Maybe Choco-cat is changing to be Mocha-pooch, too. Won’t call it blasphemy – just weird marketing- but it did get a buzz going.. rip Joan, as well..

Yeah… I remember that. Sheesh! They must have wanted to turn it upside dowm for some PR but it became a bit of a nightmare… Oh yeah, Choco -cat and Mocha-pooch! Hahaha! You have a long memory. TY for checking in. 😆 I will MISS JOAN RIVERS! Damn death!

I had never known that hello kitty changed around what they did! It is too bad about Joan Rivers passing, but she certainly did have a good and eventful life.

Great advice in this post. If I ever stop laughing, it is because I am dead;)

  8. 04/09/2014 4:43 pm

I am still reeling over the Hello Kitty not being a Cat. I have been a fan since 1980 and was gobsmacked to find out she is not a cat.

I remember Hello Kitty stuff when I was a kid, and had some stuff. I was kinda surprised to find out she was a girl too, why wait so long to tell us that? Let it be what it is. LOL RIP Joan!

  11. 04/09/2014 5:48 pm

Very cute tribute to Joan. Nicely done. I will never look at Hello Kitty the same again. 😀

  12. 04/09/2014 6:24 pm

No matter what Hello Kitty is, I still find it cute and lovely. We are all still hooked at Hello Kitty items. RIP Joan.

  13. 04/09/2014 6:31 pm

I wasn’t much of a fan of Joan’s snarky, sometimes insensitive humor, but I’ll have to admit she was pretty funny at times. May she rest in peace.

I love hello kitty! I have Hello kitty bows on the backs of my thighs, one on each leg.

  15. 04/09/2014 7:51 pm

They may have created hello Kitty and they can say all they want about what she is or isn’t but it is the fans that ultimately decide who she is to them and if the fans say she’s a cat, shes a cat. Not even the creator can say otherwise.

  16. 04/09/2014 9:25 pm

Being a guy I wasn’t too bent out of shape over the Hello Kitty reveal lol. RIP Joan :/

I never knew that Hello Kitty is British and where has 40 years gone???

  18. 05/09/2014 3:58 am

She’s sure been popular for a long time! My daughter is a teen and she loves Hello Kitty.

  19. 05/09/2014 4:43 am

I’ve never really noticed Kitty White, although I’ve “seen her around” so to speak, but your post bought her to life for me. As for Joan Rivers: what can you say!? An absolute one off lady with a wit and sharpness of tongue which made the bravest guest wary. We won’t see her like anytime soon R.I.P.

  20. 05/09/2014 5:48 am

i love hello kitty too! now i live in malaysia and they built this hello kitty land which i hope can pay a visit very soon! sad that my daughter loves minnie and mickey. though i try to squeeze some hello kitty to her room since she loves pink

I knew Hello Kitty was popular, but a whole conference haha? Loved the haikus, chuckled pretty hard at some of the Joan Rivers versions.

  22. 05/09/2014 1:21 pm

I LOVE Hello Kitty. I know I’m a dude, but that doesn’t change. Hello Kitty is the most adorable thing to ever exist on the planet earth.

    • 06/09/2014 4:13 am

Ben, You’re the best! There are guys who can relate the genre and the creative cartoon aspects of it. Awesome dude! 🙂

Could there ever be anything as cute as Hello Kitty? Answer: NO!

  24. 05/09/2014 2:26 pm
