FAD: 2013 Punk Chaos to Couture Retrospective at The Met Museum
As I watched, on Live Stream, the comings and goings at the MERCEDES-BENZ sponsored New York Fashion Week shows, held from February 6 – 13, I was reminded of both the creative genius and the ephemeral nature of fashion. What we see today will disappear tomorrow and show up again ten years later. So if you hold onto key pieces, there is always room to mix and match old and new and … viola! one day you’re back in fashion again.
Last summer, I saw the Punk Chaos to Couture retrospective at the Met Museum and it brought back memories of my punk rock moments in my teen years. Of course, what the Museum showed was the top designer versions of punk street wear. Like every other impatient teen, I flitted from one fashion look to the next; Punk rock to Sloane wear, the mini, maxi, midi and everything in between. Years later, I still love and follow fashion but not blindly.

But what about the fad part of it? Every fashionista worth her Louboutins or Blahniks knows that while it’s fun to keep up with the latest trends, what really distinguishes the fashionably dressed from the fashion forward is Style. When we look at the collections each season, we see the brilliant creativity of the designers. However, by the time they hit the street, the stylish fashion mavens will modify, stylize or even transform the look to suit their taste.
After the runway shows, the major top store buyers will order what their clientele need with some changes made, and the trendy faddists will pick up what they can at showroom sales or designer shops. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with being trendy, but true style transcends trendiness. Who comes to mind when you think of style? A few names come to mind…

I think it’s important to be one step ahead of the curve with fads. Enjoy them and move forward or you’ll become a fashion victim. As Conway Twitty said, “Fads are the kiss of death. When the fad goes away, you go with it.” At the end of the day, it’s imperative to be comfortable with your fashion choices. The most stylish women are both confident and at ease in their clothes – they wear the clothes not vise versa. Regardless of your fashion choices and what you choose to wear, what matters is that you wear it with a twist; Make it yours, Be brave, be bold and smile…. You look marvelous!

I am such a thrifty person, I tend to stick with clothes that are classics. Something that will hold up through the years. I hate spending a lot of money on something, only for it to be considered out of style a few months later.
I’m not a fashiony person at all. I know when things look good, but never pull them together myself.
I love fashion, but ever since I gained weight, not so much. I plan on going to the gym soon and getting on a weight loss program soon, and then I will get back into fashion again. Some of the styles for Spring are really cute.
Sometime some of the new fashions really surprise me. Like do people REALLY wear that stuff out in public. You see it in fashion shows, but not real life.
I don’t even know what’s stylin anymore. I used to think of myself as fashionable but now, not so much.
I am a fashion person but my budget or should I say my wallet is not. I love taking some of the run way ideas and making my own frugal version of it. some of the out of the world ideas are just for attention to get their name out there and talked about I learned that when I attended Toronto fashion week assisting a celebrity hair stylist.
i’m horrible at this kind of thing I would to have someone spend the day with to tell me what would look nice on me from colors to style. My dream is to have a makeover one day and to be taught how to be a girl.
I grew up very poor, so I just never learned to care about fashion. I know what I like and that is what I buy.

I love the quote you included by Coco Chanel. It is so true. Clothing fashion tends to be a little on the weird side to me but I love what she said. The whole world has Fashion.. Its not just in what we are wearing!
I’m not trendy in the least. I usually stick with jeans and a shirt…dressing up on Sunday in slacks. Before kids I was all about fashion but since them I’ve been too depressed with my body 🙁

I’m definitely not a fashionista, but I do like to be stylish on a budget.
I’m not into fads, but some I really end up liking like the hi-low dresses that came out last year & the year before.
I am not into fashion as much as I use to be but I do enjoy looking at it. I prefer to stick with the clothes that I can wear for several years and they don’t really go in or out of fashion.
I honestly don’t understand fashion. They’re just always coming up with clothes that normal people rarely wear.

I remember the kids going through a punk rock phase in fashion. 🙂 My mom wouldn’t let me partake… but I did think it was cool. 😉

I agree- I never give into fads! I like classic pieces that are timeless. My daughter is into fads but she’s young and can get away with most of them!

I love fashion! I have to admit, I often feel like kicking myself for getting rid of “out of style” clothes. I still wear the same sizes I did in high school so seeing how trends get recycled, I wish I had kept a few cool pieces I had years ago. I don’t mind spending on key pieces I know I can use again or incorporate into the next season somehow.
I like the classic pieces. Audrey Hepburn never goes out of style!:)
