Kitchen Haiku: Call Me Hot Chilli Capsicum…

09/02/2014

“Once you get a spice in your home, you have it forever. Women never throw out spices. The Egyptians were buried with their spices. I know which one I’m taking with me when I go.” Erma Bombeck

Where’s my darling Spice? Call me… My favorite kitchen spice is chilli pepper of the capsicum family. I love the whole range of hot, sweet, mild peppers, but the hot chilli holds my heart.  Yes, I’m one of those people who travel with a personal stash. What about you? What kitchen ingredient is always by your side?.

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: What’s the one item in your kitchen you can’t possibly cook without? A spice, your grandma’s measuring cup, instant ramen — what’s your magic ingredient, and why?

Positive Motivation Tip: In my kitchen, the hot chilli pepper rules supreme. Find your passion and embrace it without shame.

One item in my kitchen that I can’t cook without??? I would either have to go with chicken broth or garlic salt. I swear, I throw them into EVERYTHING – whether the recipe calls for it or not 🙂

  2. 09/02/2014 1:08 pm

I do love hot and spicy food-but it no longer loves me–Garlic is the one thing that I use almost constantly in everything I make1

  3. 09/02/2014 1:11 pm

Fresno chilies are my favorites, but the can’t-live-without item in my kitchen is olive oil. For sure.

I love this! I really like how you can have so much fun with words! I too love chilies.

  5. 09/02/2014 1:51 pm

We too love peppers, Chili or Cayenne are my favorites. All that heat makes the flavors stand out!

  6. 09/02/2014 2:08 pm

I have to admit I don’t really do peppers – I’m not a spicy person. I am however pulled in by your love for them and now want to try one again :/ x

  7. 09/02/2014 2:16 pm

Love the pictures of the peppers – so colourful.

  8. 09/02/2014 2:45 pm

love your chili words…not too much HOT for me…but, I too…like a little in some dishes…neat post!

  9. 09/02/2014 2:48 pm

    i love hot food!!!

  10. 09/02/2014 3:00 pm

I loved these pictures. I’m not a huge fan of hot/spicy foods but my husband sure it. This makes me want to go cook something for him 🙂

  11. 09/02/2014 3:11 pm

Yes you are right, disgracefully some of my spices are still in tin containers and over 20 years old. I do not use them but I have not thrown them out either. I do but fresh now and love hot peppers too !

  12. 09/02/2014 3:13 pm

I like lots of herbs and spices. Ginger root is one of my favorites. I like moderately hot chilies in foods.

  13. 09/02/2014 3:20 pm

Garlic, onions, ginger root, and of course chili peppers. My kitchen are never without them.Sorry. I can’t name one without naming the other. 🙂 Love the Haikus. Descriptive and vibrant.

  14. 09/02/2014 3:20 pm

I love spicy food I can’t really eat it because I’m nursing. My mother cooks everything with pepper.

  15. 09/02/2014 3:43 pm

I love chilis & hot spices, yum! Spicy food for the win!

  16. 09/02/2014 3:53 pm

Wait no Ghost Peppers? I have only tried a Habenero once and it was in cheese and I could not handle it. I love cayenne pepper but my favorite seasoning to keep with me at all time should be our Creole Seasoning – the perfect mix for just about everything I make.

  17. 09/02/2014 5:04 pm

My hub loves spicey foods but I have never been able to eat them.

  18. 09/02/2014 6:56 pm

Spicy food is a must in our house. My 7 year old enjoys it also:) Loved the poems and cant wait to share these ones with my class. Thanks for sharing!

I agree..it is incredibly hard to throw a spice out. I love the fiery taste of hot peppers, and I have a chipotle chili powder that I use for adding heat, and every time I do…it fills my kitchen and makes me choke. It literally gets in your lungs. My favorite dried spice is garlic powder. I love using it.

  20. 09/02/2014 7:34 pm

I think my favorite spice is cumin. My husband isn’t so thrilled with my obsession lol.

  21. 09/02/2014 7:51 pm

Chili pepper is huge part of the cuisine here. There is actually a dish that consists entirely of chili pepper and white cocoa beans, in equal portions.

  22. 09/02/2014 10:17 pm

I love these colourful pictures. Salt and pepper are of course the most basic spices. I add cinnamon to a lot of food, for instance apples or pears. I love ginger, but also paprika, chilli and all the Italian herbs. It is just wonderful to have a lot of different spices available in cooking.

  23. 09/02/2014 10:38 pm

Those are some great looking pepper. I love hot peppers.

  24. 10/02/2014 2:06 am

What a wonderful variety, I wouldn’t know what to do with most of them!

  25. 10/02/2014 3:17 am

I love peppers. I don’t have a go-to, but hubby always wants his Montreal spice.

  26. 10/02/2014 4:39 am

My dad’s girlfriend gave us a bunch of different peppers from her garden this summer and my husband put ’em in our spaghetti – it was so good!

  27. 10/02/2014 5:59 am

I hate the way pepper burns my mouth and tongue when eating hot foods so I hate pepper. But those are lovely haiku up there. 🙂

  28. 10/02/2014 6:15 am

My husband and I are not into hot spices too much. I use them but I can’t use a lot. We are from the midwest originally and grew up in the 60s and there were not a lot of hot spices used on a daily basis back then in the midwest.

I do love adding a little Worcestershire sauce to some of my recipes and it gives it a little special added flavor.

  29. 10/02/2014 7:39 am

I need to learn more about how to cook with peppers! I love them! Yummy!

  30. 10/02/2014 8:00 am

I do love peppers – all kinds! Can’t leave the store without a few. But for the spice I would carry with me, it’s a hard choice, but I think garlic wins.

  31. 10/02/2014 8:43 am

Love the quote on Egyptians being buried with their spices…that might just happen to me! What a wonderful piece on spices…in the red chili category, the earthy Kashmiri chili still holds a special place in my kitchen:)

  32. 10/02/2014 9:15 am

My kitchen it’s garlic, onion powder, my husband makes an amazing salsa with all kinds of peppers in it chopped up fine.

  33. 10/02/2014 10:50 am

I was born in Haiti and these peppers are use a lot in many of the dishes! I love cooking with them, gives a lot of flavor. My hubby loves hot peppers!

  34. 10/02/2014 12:11 pm

I love spices! or WE love.

There is no dinner on this table without garlic, chili, pepper and a lot of other goodness 😉

  35. 11/02/2014 4:31 am

I love spices and have a kitchen cabinet full of them. I can’t live without my Old Bay Seasoning for my fish. I love hot peppers and there’s also a bottle of hot sauce in my kitchen as well. Even my kids love it. 🙂

  36. 11/02/2014 9:05 pm

I wish I were just a little braver with the hot peppers. I don’t really know how to work with them. I’m a bit of a lightweight! But currently I’m very fond of turmeric, and make tea or just add it to everything from soups to popcorn! 🙂

  37. 12/02/2014 3:38 pm

Guilty of not throwing out old spices; I just can’t do it. Some of those really old Durkee’s cans I’ve had since the 1980s may have only a few particles of long gone tasteless stuff in them, yet they still decorate my cupboard.

  38. 13/02/2014 5:18 pm

wow very colorful .. and i think it’s very hot ..

Since I first read your kitchen haiku, I wanted to let you know another use for the tiny cans that spices used to be sold in. I had been to an antique store in Smithville, Ohio where I saw a collection of these little cans on sale for $5.00 each. That added a whole new value and perspective to the collection in my kitchen.

Thank you and so good to know because I have a couple myself and I didn’t pay that much for them so, they are holding their value. Thanks again! 🙂
