Weekly Photo Challenge: Selfie

08/02/2014

“Friendship with ones self is all important because without it one cannot be friends with anyone else in the world.” Eleanor Roosevelt

Oy gevalt! , Do We Need More Of You?

Oy Gevalt! , Do We Need More Of You? No! The Selfie in triplicate

I was thoroughly amused when I saw the weekly challenge prompt and then, on second thoughts, I wasn’t. Why? I take Selfies, but not much and I don’t take them with my cellphone. Some view Selfies as a form of Self-love, while others would say that the Selfie is the new, 21st century example of Narcissistic behavior. Is that true? How do you view it? Frankly, It has always struck me as sophomoric; the sort of thing our teenagers would do … but I know that’s not entirely true.

So, with no further ado, I’ll share a few. I have to confess that most of my Selfies were taken in Hotel bathrooms because they tend to have huge mirrors, decent lighting, and a few accoutrements like the shaving mirror in the first shot. By the way, as to the back-story of that first shot, it was taken in Seattle, at a boutique hotel across the street from the Seattle Art Museum, and within spitting distance of Pike Place Market. I was playing around with the camera and saw myself in multiples. In retrospect, I think it’s so funny that I’m looking so serious in a playful shot.

Do We Need More Of You? No! The Selfie - i is i

Dove Beauty: Selfie

The second shot above was taken at a beautiful retreat. I like it because it shows just one eye. It saves something from the rest of the world; allowing the viewer to wonder. Also, I was relaxed, at peace, and wearing my high school sweatshirt… I’m tempted to say “Don’t ask, long story” but there’s no twisted story. A group of us on Facebook had the sweatshirt made from an old one and I love the soft cotton and light oatmeal color.

Another kind of Selfie I tend to take is of my teeth… What the heck? Well yeah! We all have our quirks. I like my teeth and, honestly, I’m beginning to see the connection between Selfies and Self-love. Selfies are about self-confidence; liking yourself enough to indulge – hence the teen connection.  UPDATED: I added one more below. Done!

More below!

“Knowledge of the self is the mother of all knowledge. So it is incumbent on me to know my self, to know it completely, to know its minutiae, its characteristics, its subtleties, and its very atoms.” Khalil Gibran

Another Selfie - Caramba! All Teeth and Red Lipstick.

Another Selfie – Ay Caramba! All Teeth and Red Lipstick.

The first shot above was taken in yet another hotel bathroom; this time in Sun Valley, Idaho. I love those Alexander McQueen pants and that was what prompted me to take the shot. The second one is self explanatory and taken at home. Ditto that teeth shot… Pretty silly right? When I think of Selfies, I often think of them as miniature Human Installations. In a sense, they are our creation of a moment in our lives; Self captured in photographic – life size. So this takes me back to the notion that the Selfie is the new millennium form of Narcissism. What do you think?

Perhaps there is some truth to it. No? The endless preening and posing for our own cameras might be shocking to some of the older generation but who knows. Even our President took a group Selfie at Tata Mandela’s funeral… Playful? Yes. In good form? You decide. I have captured other Selfies/shots of myself but these would do for now. What comes to mind when you think of Selfies? When do you find yourself taking them? What Selfies do you often capture through your lens? Do let me know in a comment below.
Thank you EVERYONE!

This post was inspired by a prompt from Weekly Photo Challenge: SELFIE   For this challenge, snap a selfie with your camera-phone or camera.  Feel free to get creative and clever, and if you don’t want to share a photo of yourself, think of a way to approach this challenge in a different way. (Hint: silhouettes and shadows are your friends.)

You’re not to shabby at taking selfies 😉 I take a few every now and then & post them to Instagram, but that’s only because I have less people that follow me on there and less chance of people seeing the pictures LOL!!

  2. 08/02/2014 1:03 pm

Very inspiring post both the text and the captured photos… 🙂

  3. 08/02/2014 1:09 pm

Well said, well captured. I rarely take them, and when I do, it is often so that I can get an informal family portrait with all four of us included. But once in a while I am struck by a moment I don’t want to forget, and a rare selfie is the result. Great captures, Elizabeth!

  4. 08/02/2014 1:15 pm

Good for you! I’ve never felt comfortable in photos and selfies seem to be extra un-flattering. But you did an awesome job, showing all kinds of ways to capture the selfie. Inspiring! 🙂

  5. 08/02/2014 1:19 pm

Love all your selfies 🙂 I am not too big on selfies but I do take them when situation demands it lol.. I love this quote by Eleanor Roosevelt. So true, isn’t it?

  6. 08/02/2014 1:20 pm

I have tried to take a selfie before… I don’t do a very good job at it. Some people are just naturals at it.

  7. 08/02/2014 1:42 pm

Love your selfies. The first one is awesome.

    BE ENCOURAGED! BE BLESSED!

  8. 08/02/2014 2:06 pm

I love this Eliz! That first shot of you with your reflection in the mirrors is awesome!!! 🙂 also love the one of you in the yellow looking like a fashionista!

  9. 08/02/2014 2:06 pm

I can barely manage to take a photo with a camera much less one of myself! And yes, I know myself well enough to know that I would only frustrate myself. Luckily I have learned over the years to like myself just the way I am!

  10. 08/02/2014 2:06 pm

i loved the video I shared it and taged my father inlaw he says I take way to many selfies lol You took some pretty good selfies.

  11. 08/02/2014 2:16 pm

I like the first one – has a sense of fun 🙂

  12. 08/02/2014 2:16 pm

You are good at this. I never take selfies – except if there is a mirror or a window reflecting my image. i don’t like to see myself in pictures.

  13. 08/02/2014 2:38 pm

Excellent selfies Eliz, it’s so nice to see what you look like!

  14. 08/02/2014 2:38 pm

Interesting, unusual selfies. I take them occasionally, but I’m never satisfied with them. Maybe I need to switch to the partial face….

  15. 08/02/2014 2:43 pm

Great photos. The one at the top is so clever!

  16. 08/02/2014 2:57 pm

  18. 08/02/2014 4:09 pm

    Love your selfies!

  19. 08/02/2014 4:56 pm

I think Selfie can mean a lot of things, I do them from time to time to capture moments with my kids when there is nobody to take the photo for me. Luckily I have a camera and tripod so I can usually use it unless the trip was not really planned.

  20. 08/02/2014 5:23 pm

You’ve shown just how versatile a selfie can be! I never took any until my daughter got to be a teen. She likes to lift the camera up and get our pic together sometimes. I like that. 🙂

  21. 08/02/2014 6:18 pm

    I love your face!

  22. 08/02/2014 6:22 pm

    Beautiful selfies, Eliz. 🙂

  23. 08/02/2014 8:21 pm

What a true post. We need to be more empowered by SELF.

  24. 08/02/2014 8:23 pm

Beautiful selfies and love that pretty red lipstick!

  25. 08/02/2014 9:13 pm

Love your selfies! The one with the camera right in front of your face made me giggle, cause that is something I would probably do on accident!

  26. 08/02/2014 9:37 pm

I love photo challenges. I think they force us to really look at ourselves and to accept ourselves enough to take photos of ourselves.

  27. 08/02/2014 10:08 pm

I think your selfies are awesome! I think they are a form of self love, but I really do think it depends on the person 🙂

  28. 09/02/2014 5:49 am

beautiful shots… why do I hate photos of myself???…

  29. 09/02/2014 8:20 am

The Elenore Roosevelt quote is perfect. Great shots. Love those pants.

  30. 09/02/2014 9:37 am

I did a few instagram photo challenges. Luckily none of them wanted a selfie. I don’t like being infront of the camera too much. Your selfies look great!!

When I get a new phone and I’m playing with its features I try a selfie in the hope that THIS new phone will make me look good 🙂 🙂 🙂

  40. 10/02/2014 9:16 am

I’m a fan of selfies. I take tons of myself all the time. I dont alway share 🙂 I think you took great selfies. Keep doing them after the project.

    Love all your selfies, Elizabeth.

These selfies were also taken on this same trip. Across from the hotel on the ocean side of the street, there was a convenient boardwalk that stretched all along the Pacific Ocean providing breathtaking views of the ocean. We stopped along the trail to snap a few selflies and my boyfriend surprised me with a kiss!
