Weekly Photo Challenge: Lunchtime. Japanese Taiko drummers in motion

Lately, with kids away in college and my recent enrollment in a challenging certification program, lunch is the least reliable meal in my household. If I’m out and about, I eat where I am. If I’m home, I might have some leftovers or a simple fruit and yoghurt dish. However, when the kids come home for spring break, we eat out or at home. They are home now; one for the week and the other for the weekend.

Yesterday, we had lunch at the Palisades Mall in Rockland County and the Bento Box above was one of the meals we shared at a Japanese restaurant. The contents include: teriyaki salmon, pickled seaweed, avocado crab roll, batter covered veggies and shrimp, potato salad and a delicious mixed greens salad. Why the mall? Well, both kids love Uniqlo (a Japanese clothing store) and it had a grand opening at the mall yesterday. The store had some entertainment, we saw a group of female performers on Japanese drums known as Taiko. Also, if you spent a certain dollar amount, you received a gift with purchase. It was a fun outing that was topped off with a meal.

The picture above, the rice and vegetable dish, is what I had for dinner on Thursday night and I added it to show what I might’ve had for lunch on Friday. It’s a quick and easy dish to make and ideal for times when we have hectic schedules. The avocado roll was an appetizer we had as we waited for our meal to be prepared and served. I wish I had a chance to read the full assignment for this challenge, I would’ve taken some photos of the sushi chefs… Next time. More below

Since there were four of us at lunch, we had another teriyaki dish at our lunch table. By meal’s end, we were all full and had to take a window shopping walk around the mall to digest it. As we got off the escalator on the 3rd floor, I heard drumming again and captured another shot of the Taiko drummers. They were energetic and skilled young female performers and their presence added a wonderful note to our outing. How was your lunch?
Have a great weekend and thanks again for stopping by!

*Please bear with me as I continue to catch up on reading and commenting on your blogs. I’ll catch up soon too. Thank you all for your patience!

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: Weekly Photo Challenge: LunchtimeIn a new post created for this challenge, share a picture that says LUNCHTIME. *Show us what you actually had for lunch.
*Show us what went into your lunch — a stunningly saturated pile of red radishes at the farmer’s market, or the process by which you construct the Ultimate Turkey Sandwich.
*Show us what a mealtime is like at your house. Who’s there? What are they doing?
*Show us a photo of someone truly enraptured by what they’re eating and capture the deep satisfaction of an enjoyable meal. If you don’t have time for lunch or eat on the run, show us that.
*Show us your favorite place to sit while you eat lunch, or your favorite place to prepare food.
Capture a candid photo of the guy behind the counter of your favorite greasy spoon.

My fellow bloggers were equally creative with their selections. I added some from Zemanta and a few from WP Daily Post below. Check out how others interpreted the theme – Lunchtime – also see below. ***

Positive Motivation Tip: A meal shared is a meal enjoyed. On outings, try sharing a few dishes instead of buying individual meals.

Yum! Love all those food photos. If only gaining weight was an illusion too. 😉

    • 06/04/2013 4:39 am

True! If we could eat with our eyes and get the nutrients without the calories, it would be great. 🙂

  4. 17/03/2013 3:52 am

Gorgeous pictures! I don’t even eat that kind of food, but it still looks delicious. Lunch is always better with dancing drummers…..

    • 06/04/2013 4:40 am

You are funny Genevieve! What kind of food do you prefer? 🙂

      • 06/04/2013 7:13 am

I’m more a mac and cheese, pizza, pasta, BLT person. Let’s just say I can eat happily from the children’s menu every day.

      • 06/04/2013 7:21 am

Okay I get that then! I love Pasta too but my Dr put me on a restricted diet and I had let it go. I can have it once in a while. I am wheat and lactose sensitive. 🙂

      • 06/04/2013 7:45 am

Whoa! God bless. That would throw a monkey wrench into my whole diet!

      • 06/04/2013 7:57 am

It did mine for a while. 🙂

      • 12/04/2013 9:35 am

Tell me about it. It did mine. 🙁

  5. 17/03/2013 4:05 am

Very delicious, I did not catch when we should come… “lol”

    😉

    • 06/04/2013 4:40 am

How about the next time you come to the USA? It would be a pleasure to have lunch with you. 🙂

      • 06/04/2013 4:52 am

I’m sure it would be interesting and a great pleasure to have lunch with you and yours… 😉

      • 06/04/2013 4:56 am

Definitely. We’d love to show you around and enjoy a meal. To date, I’ve met 3 of my blog friends in person. I’d love to meet more. 🙂 Sorry I’ve been out of the loop. Catching up now.

  6. 17/03/2013 5:20 am

The lunch looks delish and the dancers just add to the mix. No fancy drinks? 😉

    • 06/04/2013 4:41 am

No fancy drinks dear one… I have teenagers and I don’t drink. Yeah, I know. Pretty boring lifestyle. 😆

      • 06/04/2013 6:49 am

Not at all! A fancy drink can be sans the booze. Just stink an umbrella into your lemonade. 😉

      • 06/04/2013 6:55 am

Oh, that kind of fancy… Like at the beach in Cancun!? TY! 😆

  7. 17/03/2013 6:43 am

Foe me mealtime is very wholesome time, which caters to not only body but also mind. Good meals is a sort of subtle entertainment for senses. Loved the photographs.

Teriyaki chicken and veggies seem to be very tasty!

    • 06/04/2013 5:17 am

Yes, I believe it was very tasty… I’ll ask my lunch mates next time to save you a piece. 😆

  10. 17/03/2013 10:45 am

The lunches look great! The Bento box looks quite filling. Might need to walk around for a bit after or we’ll get sleepy. 🙂

    • 06/04/2013 5:18 am

Thankfully, it was shared. It is a generous serving for the box, I agree. 😆

  11. 17/03/2013 1:43 pm

Avocado rolls are my favourite 😀

    • 06/04/2013 5:18 am

I love them too… So light and satisfying. 🙂

Nom, nom, nom. I want sushi!! 🙂

  14. 18/03/2013 7:35 am

Do try some Barb! You wont be disappointed. 😉

  15. 18/03/2013 8:14 am

Lovely food! I wish I’d seen those drummers – they look like fun.

    • 06/04/2013 6:11 am

They were very entertaining. They added some impressive gymnastic moves to their drumming . It was awesome. 😉

  16. 18/03/2013 8:31 am

Yum! I love sushi and Japanese food. Looks pretty good for Mall food.

    • 06/04/2013 6:27 am

😆 You are quite right. I’m not much of a mall person but we visit a few in our area and the food is generally okay. This Japanese restaurant serves better. 🙂

  17. 18/03/2013 7:18 pm

Must be nice having your kids home! What is your certification program for? Sounds like you’ve been really busy! 🙂

    • 06/04/2013 6:29 am

I’ve been very busy with a lot of stuff going on. I’m working towards my CPM (Certified Property Manager) and also finishing a certification with Doreen Virtue who does Angel Healing work and Tarot. Next question you ask, I’ll share with you privately. TY! 🙂

      • 08/04/2013 6:38 am

Awesome Eliz! Good for you. Sounds all very exciting and yes we can share via private FB message too! 🙂

  18. 18/03/2013 7:46 pm

You have been busy, Eliz! I hadn’t caught on before that you were in a certification program, so good for you for even trying to keep up with your blog and reading others. Whew! I must say that sometimes I like lunch more than any other meal. It often is leftovers from the night before, but I think that midday I’m hungry and it’s satisfying. I like the photos of your lunch options, especially those avocado rolls! 🙂 Take care…and I’m pulling for you!

    • 06/04/2013 6:31 am

TY Debra and I apologize for falling back a bit. I’ll catch up for sure. I like those leftovers too. However, my kids are not fans of leftovers. 😆

  19. 19/03/2013 8:09 am

Truly fun outing and quality time with the kids 🙂

    • 06/04/2013 6:37 am

TY Cee! Since they are now in college, we don’t get to go out as much. 🙂

I bet you have lots of wonderful restaurants where you are… In the middle of heaven. 😉

  25. 22/03/2013 10:34 pm

Love them all. My wife and I enjoy sushi and sashimi. It’s our weakness but we also enjoy any other kind of food. Great post.

    • 06/04/2013 7:01 am

Oh Madhu! I look forwrad to you visiting NY someday. We’d have a lovely meal near the Hudson River and you can have all the Teriyaki you want. 🙂

        Wouldn’t that be lovely! 🙂

  28. 28/03/2013 6:25 am

That Salmon Bento Box looks really delicious., but the Teriyaki chicken and veggies has to be the winner. 🙂

    • 06/04/2013 7:23 am

Hi Adin, Thanks for picking the chicken over my fish. Are you sure you don’t want to share the Salmon instead? No worries, when we have lunch with Madhu, the chicken dish will be fresh and available. 🙂

Goddamn it! That’ll teach me to browse. There I was conscientiously catching up on what I’ve missed over the last 4 months and I stumble upon your gorgeous lunchtime photos! How am I supposed to stick to my ‘sensible eating regime’ when viewing all that delicious food! I’m doing my darndest not to go to the kitchen and get a tasty snack.
    Needless to say…….great photos!

    • 17/06/2013 11:26 am

You are so sweet! Thank you for your humorous feedback and kind words.
      Blessings,
